Okay. Everyone here has heard of the law of karma. But there's something that has been sitting in the back of my brain for quite some time. How do you determine the ways in which you are punished through karma? Death can't be it. Death only signifys when you have learned all you can in one life. Are you punished by other people who's lives happen to clash with yours? Nature? Or maybe just a streak of bad luck? This is going to bug me for a long time. So any insights would be great! :)

A few years ago I laughed gleefully when I learned my ex was in jail. I got a summons less than a week later. I have also given my last dollar to someone for their lunch and had someone hand me a 20 less than a week later. You be the judge.:)

Well, it really depends on your Path, how you view Karma, that is. Our Tradition doesn't see Karma flowing from lifetime to lifetime, but that you get "retribution" for deeds done in this lifetime. If you do something wrong, you'll receive an equal smack on the hand or rear-end. If you do something good, you'll receive a blessing, or a whole stack of blessings. Think of it this way: "For every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction". ;) :D

Karma from my personal viewpoint is not to punish nor reward but it as Mairwen says it is a reaction for your actions. If you do good then good will be returned to you if you do bad then expect bad to be returned to you.

I agree, karma isn't a punishment. It's like failing a class in school, you don't get 'punished', instead you get to go to summer school and take the exam all over again (which of course to some can seem like a punishment ;) ) .
Sometimes people do horrible things, but even in those situations there are lessons to be learned by everyone involved. It doesn't mean that if you beat someone up in this life you'll get beat up yourself in your next life, it's a lot deeper than that. Karma isn't about the physical action (the beating) karma is about what lays behind the action. It's all about positive and negative energy and their flow. It's the same simple principle as if you smile, you automatically send out positive energy which will make people around you feel better and essentially treat you better (the positive you gave out came back to you). If on the other hand you frown or give out any other kind of negative energy, you'll make people around you feel lousy and they will reward you with the same negative energy you gave out, only energy - both negative and positive - has a tendency to multiply itself through every physical action..does that make sense?
Anyway that's just MH personal O :).

I think it makes perfect sense Vinga!!
I think the only thing I can think to say on this is..."the 3 fold law" I believe in it....I also believe that if something is meant to be it will be!! Whatever reprecussions come back to you for an action you did is what is supposed to happen to you.....it's how you deal with it that matters on the rest of your future...and how you deal with it decides if your future reprecussions will be good or bad...you have the power to make your life happy...or bad and depressing....
I hope that made sense...I was having a hard time putting my thoughts into words!! I need some sleep:)

The doctrine of karma is this- you control your own destiny. whatever you sow, you will reap. I think that intent is included, not just actions. If you do something good, for selfish reasons, the repercussions are different than if you do a good thing out of love and selflessness. If you do something bad, it'll catch up to you, eventually...
