View Full Version : OT: What are your mundane hobbies?

I am just being nosy... but I am curious as to what you all do as hobbies. I was scrapbooking all afternoon (the kids are at my mom's, *sigh* and I'm enjoying the peace and quiet), and that got me wondering.
I have been scrapbooking since last November and have been trying to catch up on both kids' books. I also really like to cook, garden and work on aromatherapy. See why I am learning about kitchen witchery? :)
Ok, so what do all of you do in your spare time?

We are suposed to have free time? Things I like doing are cross stitching, video games, gardening, candlemaking, soapmaking, papermaking and jewlery making. There are a few others that I like too but right now I'm just looking for the time to relax period.

Merry meet,
My husband works nights so when my son goes to sleep I try to use that spare time to study wicca, perform simple rituals and do Tarot readings. I also like to do simple crafts that don't take to long...instant gratification thing. On the days when I'm too wiped out I veg out and flip aimlessly through the channels or zone out on the computer.
Blessed Be,

I do a little bit of almost everything. :D
I collect stuff, which then collects dust right now. Let me think, what are the more interesting things I collect??? Well, I collect rocks & fossils, stamps (not much of a collector of that anymore... but...), porciline dolls & antique dolls, small boxes and for the last, but probably oddest of the list, I collect blades. I don't have much of an arsenal... <coughs> I mean collection yet, but they're a little expensive.
I also do alot of writing. I just got my first serial article recently!! <does a happy dance> I write poetry, stories, and a whole ton of other stuff. :D I am learning needlepoint and cross stitch. I'm going to be learning the rest of the "womanly arts" soon. I can't wait for my mother and grandmother to teach me how to can. :) I read voraciously, there's a running joke that my room is going to fall through to the one below between the rocks I have collected and my books. 8O I also go hiking alot too, when I have a chance and some where to do it.

I don't get too much free time at all anymore, but when I do, I like to do lots of things!! I collect movies; I hike; I swim; I love to travel - going to New Orleans, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Ocho Rios in November; I read a lot; and I love games- computer games, card games, board games!!

Hmmmm, hobbies you ask?
In no particular order: surfing the web/working on web projects (home pages, webrings, etc.); crocheting and knitting; reading (most often Pagan/Wiccan-related non-fiction, with the odd novel here and there); seeing friends and family; quilting; watching TV; playing in a handbell choir; dancing; volunteering (in which I am hoping to become more involved); and I'm sure a half-dozen things I am forgetting at the moment. :) Oh, and music is an ever-present force as well.

Hmmm....free time. Well, I had some until I discovered this board, lol! I'm an HGTV (Home & Garden Television) addict so I watch that channel whenever I get the chance. I'm always decorating and redecorating my house. I like to craft -- florals, wreathes, candles, and I sew if I'm really inspired. I like to recycle old fabric into new stuff and on a really good day I make costumes for the renaissance faire. When I can get myself out of the house I like to hang out at bookstores and curious little knick-knack shops, and like to go for walks with my hubby and son along the river.

 Me too!!! My hubby is threatening to erase that channel from our TV 8O . I love decorating and gardening. I also do a lot of drawing and painting, wood crafting and woodburning, reading, fishing and of course surfing the net and building websites.
I usually have at least 15 projects going at once and most of them never get finished :p .

I collect pez, anything Doors related, anything Korn related, shot glasses and of course the bottles of alcohol to go with the shot glasses :D (I don't drink very often at all....they just sit there ...collecting dust) :) The only show I really care if I miss is Crocodile Hunter....I love movies....(I had a dream the other night about Heath Ledger from 10 Things I hate about you, Patriot, and a knights tale....it was quite a wonderful dream that had to do with us just staring into each others eyes....shhhh, don't tell my husband!!!) :D I'm also addicted to Jeff Hardy of WWF's hardy boyz....I'm not awake when WWF is on tv so I spend a lot of my time looking at Hardy Boyz websites and just staring at his beautiful face!!!:D A lot of my time is taken up by work and taking care of my husband (which I should get paid for...it's such a full time job....he's so difficult to deal with with his diabeties and panic attacks...and his trying to loose weight...) I also love taking care of my mini zoo....a kitty named kitty, a dog named Brillo, a snake named Gus and a bird named Jose!! I can tell you what I DON'T do...house work! YUCK! :bad:
I love doing anything by hand...I make anything & everything (close enough). I make miniature jointed teddy bears by hand. They're no bigger than 2" & are completely hand sewn. I also sew, knit, soap making, paper making, cross stitch, spin, rug hooking, & gardening...the usual. I always seem to be doing something...when I'm sitting down, I have to be knitting or doing somekind of handwork. I can't seem to sit there & not do a thing. Ok, I can't bake to save my life...cookies always turn out likt hockey pucks!
(hey! Yvonne! You make soap too?? Wish I'd known earlier...would have sent you some soap with the seeds.)

Hobbies. Hmm. Lately, my "hobbies" all seem to be related to witchcraft--whenever I have a free moment I study a few more Tarot cards. :) Aromatherapy as well. Apart from that, I am a TV junkie. And computer-related fun.
Oh. My life seems so empty. ;) Oh wait! I read. That's a hobby, right? Technically? Um. And sometimes write a bit. That's it, really.

Well for starters I've been spending WAY too much time on this board! Its starting to get very bad! But when I'm not online I like to Crosstich, I'm fairly good at it and have lots of links if you want some free stuff to stich, I'm doing my daughters' name in a dragon alphabet right now, plus the other projects just sitting somewhere. I Love my stash of DMC threads! I'm also learning how to quilt, I've got a great site for that too. I have one small pieced top that needs to be quilted. I plan on putting boarders and maybe blocks on my daughters' name and quilting it into a wallhanging. I like to read. I truly like exercising when I stick to it long enough. I've started learning to sew but I don't think I have much talent for it. One of my biggest hobbies is trying to find one my daughter in interested in. I try to find interesting crafts for her or hobby collecting. Moongazing and amature astronomy. Camping, when my baby gets a little older. Ren fairs, I'm a wench, we have at least 3 in TX that we try to go to! VW repair, when my husband can get me out there. And volunteering a little for my local Pagan community center. And baking occasionally. Theres probably a few more but I can't think of them off the top of my head. :)

Much of my free time, the past 2 years, has been taken up by studying witchcraft, reading, rituals, finding a path. Now that it is Spring/Summer, I have no free time. As my tag implies, I am a Baseball crazed fan. Especially for the NY Yankees :) Not only do I love to watch, but I play, and so does my son. (Iplay on a co-ed softball team with my brother, boyfriend, and a group of our mutual friends). So a lot of my time now is taken up by that, either he's playing or I have a game. I read constantly. Anything that interests me. Fiction, non-fiction, short stories, etc. Currently I'm reading a book my b/f gave me, it's part of the Dragonlance series. Let's see, what else.....Gardening has become a great passion of mine, but I have limited space, so I'm exploring the container gardening method this season. Of course, the computer, either checking out MW or other pagan sites, or playing computer games (I'm playing American McGee's Alice in Wonderland right now. It's delightfully dark :D ) I bake, cook, play with my kitty named Toby (the greatest cat in the world BTW). Lot's of other little stuff, I'm sure I'm forgetting. Oh well. I guess I should go and do some work now :)

I am a renaissance faire fanatic too! A member of the International Wenches Guild - Local 69, "Hussy Status," he he he. My hobbies include everything and anything, well almost, I don't cook! Leave that up to the hubbie. I like to read books pagan, fantasy or medieval related, hiking, camping, mountainbiking, computer gaming, making herbal intention candles, dabble in aromatherapy, making corked beaded potion bottle necklaces and herbal dream pillows, herb gardening, making clay goddesses, and now my husband is getting me into making wands and staffs, also singing and dancing. Phew, that's all I have time for since I work fulltime for 4 attorneys. I wish I could quit my day job and just do my hobbies, oh well it pays the bills and supports my hobbies.

Merry Meet Chryssi1,
hmmm, let's see to be a wench, well I guess show lots of cleavage when you go to the Renaissance Faires, he he he. The websiste for "The International Wenches Guild" is: www.wench.org.
We, the members of the International Wenches Guild, Local 69, put aside our personal differences, come together to support each other in our belief of a common (but not ordinary) sisterhood of Wenchdom.
We support our sisters with loyalty and honesty. We will not rush to judgement on any issue or person. We will respect each other's views and air any disagreement in an organized, calm and open manner (ie: no screaming, hair-pulling catfights in public places, etc. - no matter WHAT the Rogues might want. Take it behind the bard, ladies…) We agree to (as a group) remain politically neutral, remembering that we are a diverse group holding many different opinions. Our diversity, bound together by a single common ideal, is part of our strength and must be celebrated, NOT trampled into uniformity.
Well, besides the obvious perks of being in the Wenches Guild, we are fully licensed to torture men in all the nicest ways and the cool discounts (10-15%) from fellow wenches and faire vendors and our Partners in Crime mentioned at the website and being part of an ever-growing sisterhood of troublemakers much like yourself! You also get the official Wench Guild membership pin, the Little Brown Book (the official Guild handbook), a License to Wench (suitable for framing), and a Wenches Guild Membership Card with your name and guild rank. You also get a stack of regular Wenches Guild FREE KISS cards, and also a stash of extra special FREE KISS Cards to distribute to all Rogues, scallywags, and kissable type folks who you deem worthy of your wenchly attention! Oooh oooh!! You wanna be one of US!!! Lifetime membership is $35.00 (plus 3 bucks shipping and handling) in American moolah.
Bright Blessings!

Web design. I have lotsa fun and frustration with that, though it's been a while since I've been able to do so.
Drawing and painting.
Anime. It's an expensive habit but gods, it's addictive. Videogames are the same, but not for long, when i pick up an original NES. Yay oldschool!
Reading scifi/fantasy/cyberpunk novels, and many comic books, the latter I hope to make my life once I get out of the hell called college.
Last but not least, hanging at Denny's and imbibing too much coffee. 8D

My favorite hobby is writing; I'm a fantasy author, so right now am working on a sequel to my first book. It's an awsome feeling, let me tell you! :uhhuhuh: I'm also working on a bird book to start a fund for abused birds off of, so that's taking up a lot of spare time at the moment. My second favorite hobby is TaeKwonDo; I'm part-time staff there, and enjoy helping to teach the little kids and perfect my technique in self defense. I also spend a lot of time taking care of my cockatiels and sugar gliders, enjoying their compant and (in the case of one the cockatiels) regaining trust and friendship. Lastly, I like to take care of all of my plants; I have a bunch of African violets, bonzai trees, and my favorite plant is a holiday cactus. I used to be an avid reader, but I can't read for more than five minutes without itching to get back to writing books of my own. I also used to play my trumpet a lot, but I'm too sickly anymore and it just makes me have breathing and chest problems. I miss it badly.

Well, I am in college, so between classes, work, homework, finding time to eat and sleep there is little left over. It's worse when I have studio classes for art, because then I spend my whole weekend in the studio.
But when I DO get free time in my room I like to do cross stitches, some knitting, and sewing. I'm saving cloth right now to make my first quilt. I also love to read, I write poetry and stories, draw, and goof off on the computer (That consists of talking to my friends on IM, coloring and posting my pictures on the web, and taking online tests.)
When I'm not in my room, I like to go driving through the mountains, or hiking, I love antique stores, and thrift stores. Oh, never let me in a book store, I will refuse to leave! Oh and most of all I love to star gaze at night.
tatting (a type of lacework)
Hey Avalon how did you learn how to do tatting? An elderly lady, who is friend's with my mother, did the tatting for my sister's wedding dress. But, apparently no one else in my community knows how to do it. My mother has a book on it and I am going to try to teach myself. But if you know of any other books or notes on how to do it I would greatly appreciate it.

Hello everyone,
Me when I have free time i love doing my scrapbooking because when i work on my scrapbooking i remember all the fun memories i have and i put my own time and energy into it and i enjoy it more. One year for Christmas i called up all my family members and collected pictures from all of them then sat down on my free time and made them all scrapbooks then when christmas came around and when i gave the their gifts they all hugged me and cried because they thought they were special in their own way because i put my heart amd soul into it all. Some more things i enjoy are bike riding,Cross stiching my own pictures that i draw or finding some on the internet and then going from there, Coming to this site and beging new threads of my own or justing posting on other threads like this one. Or just chatting online and emailing my friends, dancing with my loving husband as long as its slow dancing not really into fast dancing, But most of all my favoritist is spending all my time with my loving husband. Because I do love him.

Other things I do are; reading, writing poetry, going on the internet, watching movies, drawing (occassionally), listening to music, trying to learn HTML.

I do needle tatting, which is a little different than the shuttle tatting that most books teach. In my opinion, it's a bit easier. The best reference I've found so far is Handy Hands (http://www.hhtatting.com)...books, thread, tools, etc. They'll even send you a free catalog! And Barbara Foster, who runs the site, is the unofficial "Queen of Needle Tatting."
Good luck and keep me posted!

When I'm working, my hobby at home is sleeping. Right now I have some free time and I enjoy cruising this website. When my time is truly my own I read, paint, do crafts, write fiction stories, and watch old movies. :vanish:

Well, I just found this site yesterday so I know I'll be spending the next week or so checking it out. lol Otherwise my hobbies almost always involve something crafty since I work at a craft store and can so readily fuel my addiction. Currently the #1 crafty hobby of mine is scrapbooking although I'm finding that you really can't get to the end of your pics because you just keep taking more! I actually find myself taking pictures with a scrapbook page in mind now. lol

i am the laziest thing ever *yawns*
i am proberaly so lazy due to being permentlyt tired. No matter what i try i have insomnia and can't sleep.
i always want what i can't have

OK - reading, writing, drawing (badly), spending time with my animals, spending time with my friends, watching films, listening to music, occasional concerts, messing about online and working on my 2 websites. :)
