I used to back in the days when I really didn't know what I was doing and just reading from the booklets...I still don't know what I am doing:), but I am learning...
anyhoo....I used to use a signifier but now that I am learning the meanings without constanly refering to the books I have been practicing and when I go to look through the deck for a signifier I get this feeling like I shouldn't because that card might be needed in the reading. Should I do a random drawn? I dunno but this is bugging me. I don't know why I feel so against them.

I have one spread I use a significator for, but the card gets put back into the deck and shuffled and is only important if it shows up in the reading. Other than that I find a significator just gets in the way. It's also really limiting to try to define a person in one card.

I don't use one--for the reasons already mentioned.

In my readings I have cards that mean certain people to me, but I don't often take out a significator. I generally just notice if one turns up. For instance (I read playing cards) the queen of clubs is myself, usually, the king of clubs my boyfriend (though he turned up as the king of hearts recently)... I had one card that seemed significant enough to me (5 of hearts) that it was a calling card in some readings for a while.
I have always found that taking the significator out of the deck would leave the deck missing an option, and I didn't find it helped me focus the reading.

"I have always found that taking the significator out of the deck would leave the deck missing an option, and I didn't find it helped me focus the reading." EXACTLY
Wow, thanks all. I really had a strong gut reaction against using them. Now I don't feel so weird about it.

I never use a significator card; why pull a card out of the reading that might be an important part of it?
Incidentally, the use of a Significator is what gives rise to the first card in a Celtic Cross being called 'What Covers you', since the first card did then, indeed, 'cover' the Significator.

I don't usually use a significator for the same reasons as you, Storm. I used one in a reading I did a while ago and it felt right. It was a reading for someone that I didn't know. I pulled out all the major and court cards and asked to be given a card that would give me more insight on this person. The card that I pulled out was not one of the court card. I put the rest of the cards back in the deck & reshuffled and laid out the spread. It worked quite well for this particular spread. Whenever I got to a point where I wasn't sure what the card was saying, I would refer to the significator and it really helped.

I don't use them - first because I find if I need to focus on a particular person, the signifier sometimes limits me to my perceptions of the person or his/hers of him/herself, and secondly because it takes a the deck might need to share another piece of information out of the deck.

I don't really use them either.
The only reason I could think of for using one would be to focus more on the person/question at hand.
