Quite by accident, I found an amazing book because it was in the wrong section at the bookstore. A Goddess Is A Girl's Best Friend: A Divine Guide To Finding Love, Success and Happiness by Laurie Sue Brockway has sections on which goddesses support relationships, career goals, healing, financial concerns, etc.

The book acquainted me with Nike, who delivers victory in all forms of competition and accomplishment. I really need help with setting and achieving goals right now, and have already begun invoking her and asking for her help. I don't have any Nike jewelry right now, but I am wearing my Isis pendant, since she is a winged goddess and supports commitment.

I'd already begun to invoke Lakshmi for money concerns - since I found a small figurine of her in a dollar store - a store that plays Christian contemporary music while you shop, no less

Others that support personal success are St. Therese, Brighid, Artemis, Athena, Nemesis and Durga.

Brockway gives suggestions for altars, things you can do to keep your goddess with you all the time and affirmations. The affirmation for Nike is:

"I am victorious in all things"

I intend to make 2003 a prosperous year, and I'm excited to know that so many goddesses are there to support me!

Brockway's book sounds so familar, Freyja. I think that you mentioned it in another thread. I definitely have to take a look at it. I sure can learn more in the area of goddesses associated with success. Actually, I'm looking for a goddess who I can work with who can enhance my self-esteem. I work with Athena, and I feel that she gives me strength, but I want to learn more about other goddesses.

I like Nike (you know her name means "Victory" in Greek). When you mentioned that you don't have any Nike jewelry, I totally thought of a Nike's symbol. Yes, the symbols on Nike shoes are suppose to be Nike's wings. Really. I think that the symbol is inspired by the famous sculpture, Nike of Samothrace. Check it out.

A lot of success is luck. Have you looked into the Roman goddess Fortuna?

I have A GODDESS IS A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND also. I haven't read
much of it yet, but it looks like a great book. Another book along a similar theme is GODDESS MEDITATIONS by Barbara Ardinger.

Yes, I found that sculpture in a search for a picture of Nike. I did talk about the book in several other threads - I absolutely love it, and I do also have the Ardinger book.

Brockway says that Athena and Nike should be invoked together. I know that Fortuna is also a supporter of luck and wealth, and according to Brockway we have an entire entourage to help us ~ including Hathor, Lilith, Oya and St. Terese in addition to the ones mentioned above.

I know there's another current thread about Oya - she can come in with a vengence and change what needs to be changed if you're not motivated enough to do it yourself.

Ardinger has Goody-Getty in her book, a kind of Mrs. Santa Claus who can bring good things to us, and DeGrandis says that there is no harm in asking for the goodies that we deserve.

Thanks for the tip about working with Athena and Nike simultaneously. I can totally see the connection with the two goddesses.

I've thought that Oya was associated more with anger. She's like the lightening in the sky- quite powerful. I heard that she has little patience and does not tolerate with any wrong doing. You guys here have taught me that she can bring positive points to life. For example, she can blow away the worries.

Yes, you and Eeluna have both mentioned Brackaway's book as well as Goddesses and Heroines . I have not forgotten your recommendations. I am deeply intrigued by both books. Actually, I have looked for Goddesses and Heroines in two different, big bookstores; however, it was not there. :( I'm going to order it online. Perhaps then, we can have more discussion on what we are learning from the book.

Blessed Be

I somehow got a subscription to Llewellyn's New Worlds magazine/catalog without ordering a book from them. According to it, Patricia Monagahan's The New Book of Goddesses and Heroines has been updated and there is a new edition. I haven't been able to find it in bookstores, either although a while back a staff person in Barnes and Noble told me that it could be ordered. Sounds like you could either order it directly from Llewellyn or have your local bookstore order it.

I've wanted that one for a long time, too!

Another goddess of success could be Habundia. You don't hear too much about her. I read that she represents abundance and will bring your love, wealth, and other goodies to be prosperous. She is a goddess of need, not greed, so be careful.

I saw Monagahan's book on amazon.com, so I might order it from there. I went to Borders. The computer said that the store had it; however, it wasn't there. Thanks for the tip though about Llewellyn's catalog.

Hey I got A Goddess is a Girl's Best Friend and I really like it!! I like being able to flip to a particular chapter depending on my needs at the moment, and it has a lot of good ideas for bringing the Goddesses into your life.

Anyone else do the Freya's stones one? (Don't remember exactly what it was called, but if you did/read it you will know what I'm talking about!)

The book sure does sound convenient and informative. I have a few books that list that attributes of the gods and goddesses. I found that sometimes the author may exaggerate the deity's attributes. My advice: do further research to make sure that the you agree that the deity has that special quality that you are looking for. (After reading MW member Freyja's thread in Magick and Rituals entitled "Look Before you Cast," I wanted to bring up that point.)

Here's another goddess whom some associated with success and prosperity. In India, the goddess Laxmi (Lakshmi) is the goddess of fortune and prosperity. Here's an interesting link on how she is celebrated during the Indian holiday, Diwali, the Festival of Light.

Even if you aren't into Indian culture, I still recommend that you read up on this goddess. She's an interesting read.

Ok, I've got more to add on the topic of goddesses of success. I was just thinking about the subject. If I were to need help in this area, I would probably just ask my patron deity to assist me. Also, I think that a earth goddess would be a great goddesss whom to ask. After all, what we are looking for sometimes is materialistic and thus comes from the earth.

Yes, I finally did read A Goddess is A Girl's Best Friend Another book that I just read is Sirona Knight's Goddess Bless . Now, I really liked this book. I mention it, because Knight has an entire chapter on goddesses of success. In that particular section, Knight states that Freyja could be seen as a goddess of abundance and that one could pray to her when needing extra wealth or success.

Received this in an e-mail newsletter today:

Today is thirteenth day of the waning moon – the day of “Dhan
Triodasi”, or the Thirteenth day of Wealth – a day considered
extremely auspicious for opening the doors for the welcoming of the
Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity – Goddess Lakshmi. The purchase
of any metal object, especially precious metal, marks the auspicious
act of welcoming the Goddess in the true spirit. It is said that this act,
in Her name, pleases the Goddess and demonstrates to her that we are
in the mode of receiving her blessings. It is a symbolic welcome with
the gift of a precious object. This auspicious day is commonly
referred to as “Dhanteras”.

Thanks for sharing, Freyja!

I've been reading up more on Buddhist deities for the past few months. I think that Kuan Yin can be seen as a goddess of success. I went to one of her temples before in Georgetown, Malaysia and was blown away at all the people lighting incense for her and leaving her offerings so wealth and success will enter their lives. She's also seen as a goddess of mercy.

I hadn't thought of her that way. I've recently been praying to Kaun Yin after buying Lisa Thiel's "Mother of Compassion" CD. The chant on the CD, Namo Kuan Shi Yin Pu Sa, is said to bring instant blessings - and I feel that She has!

Thanks for that info! And BTW, good to see you!
