Just curious if anyone does anything for New Years that is a tradition/supersition? (though I know a lot of people celebrate after Solstice.)

Since I'm smack in the middle of dutch country PA, we've adopted the tradition of Pork and Sauerkraut every January 1st for good luck. My sister-in-law buys a new broom and mop every December 31st to ensure a clean house through the year (though I can imagine she has quite a broom/mop collection...lol.)

Anyone else? :p

Like many people, I like to make a list of goals for the new year. I also burn my list from the previous year. This helps me let go and not regret the projects etc... I didn't finish.

Weather permitting, my husband and I take a hike in the woods too and just enjoy the hardcore onset of winter. Around here, January is usually when winter roles in with force.

It's an ancient Roman tradition to enact anything that you'd like to improve over the coming year on New Years Day. For instance, students might study, carpenters might hammer a nail in the wall, or shopkeepers could advertise. All activities performed on that day are auspicious, and carry forth into the months ahead.

Here in the south for New Year's day dinner my family has : turnip greens to represent dollars, black eyed peas with a dime hidden in it to I guess, represent coin money. Whoever gets the time is said to get the most money that year. Throw in some corn bread and ice tea.

I eat my turnip greens with apple cider vinegar and luckily they do make gluten free cornbread around here. - I'm told by my mom that the time used to be a penny until someone almost ate it.

I didn't do that this year though as my family was at the beach to do repairs on our house there and I had to work. I house-sat and thought we had that stuff in the cupboards, but we didn't so I raided the house for food I could eat and would up making myself filet mignon with a baked potato and an orange.

I think I want to start a filet mignon tradition...

Hoppin' John, a soup of black eyed peas and hot sausage, eaten on new year's day. The theory behind the superstition is that beans and pig intestine were some of the cheapest foods available, and eating frugally at the start of the year would make the rest of the year prosperous.
