Gods come to us in many ways: dreams, visions- perhaps you actually met them in the flesh! Some are subtle while others stick out like a sore thumb. While we may work with a variety of deities, many of us have a patron of sorts. How did your deity first reveal themself to you? Did they choose you, or you choose them?

Mine revealed herself after I was raped (age 16), like a mother coddling an injured child. She appeared to me in many ways since then. I have seen her in visions, during dreams, and in life as needed. I have at times heard a calm, soothing woman's voice (usually in visions and dreams) when clarification was essential.:)

My first deity wormed his way subtley into my heart. I realized my affinity during an assignment for my world civilizations class. I was just a wandering soul then, not really belonging anywhere or to anyone. When asked to write a paper on an egyptian god, Thoth called me to him. I read all the wonderous stories about him and the things he had done. Really he is a part of almost every culture and lifestyle it seems like. His intelligence, cunning, and love of the written word echo my own soul. He became my channel through which I opened myself to other gods and goddesses. The only individual I have ever met within my dreams is my spirit animal, Moswen the white spitz. She visits me quite often, to comfort me when I am sick, or even just to say hi. =)

My patron goddess...no idea when she FIRST contacted me, but I do know I was still hanging onto Christianity, trying to blend it with Paganism, and terrified of the idea of there being other deities. The problem was not that she contacted me, but that she wouldn't go away after that. Everytime I tried to meditate, there she was. I told her that I didn't want more than one God...go away. Then she started leaving the most random, unexpected symbols of herself EVERYWHERE just to be sure I thought of her frequently.

Her persistence carried on for almost a year before I finally gave in and said, "OKAY MORRIGAN! I get the picture! MAYBE there is more than one deity out there..." Several years later I'm a hard polytheist worshipping the Irish pantheon. Go figure.

The whole story just makes me laugh; she really must have seen something in me to put that much effort into nagging me for so long. She's still the first one to pester me about things when they're important, and gods forbid I ever try to ignore her again, 'cause she's gotten really good at kicking me in the butt when I need it. And I love her every day for it. :-P

How did your deity first reveal themself to you?

When I was very ill, the gods revealed themselves to me and this began a healing stage.

Did they choose you, or you choose them?

They chose me.

Bast contacted me in a vision. I was on a jogging trail and I got the sensation, and I got the feeling of something grabbing/pouncing upon me, and I saw her as a golden brown cat who said, AHA! I got you! Mine! You did not expect me, did you? Heheeeeee! :hahugh:

At the same time this man started hanging around me. One time he poofed into my car in the passenger's seat, and started talking about "those people who misunderstand me as evil." A few days later, I laid down in bed and closed my eyes to see this being who had pale gray skin and was dressed in a pharaoh's costume. He had a long snout like an anteater/aardvark, but full of razor sharp canine teeth, long thin fingers with claws, and glowing red eyes. I had no idea what I was looking at and thought, OMG MONSTER! IT'S GOING TO EAT MY SOUL!!! HEEEELP! AAAAAAAAAAAAH! On a forum some pagans were talking about Sutekh and his personality sounded the same as the personality of my unknown man (although these people interpreted him as "terrible" and "bad," but he didn't bother me). I thought, oh, that's who's been talking to me, and that must have been the gray being I saw. And he came down and said I was right.

About a year later, I was reading a book before going to bed and suddenly became aware of a being in the room. He emanated the most kind, gentle, loving energy and I could smell water, gentle and still but with a lot of power underneath. He felt very ancient and wise. He didn't have to tell me who it was. I already knew it was Khnum and what he wanted: you are my beloved child; I want you to be my craftsman.

And then I realized he had been trying to get my attention for a while but I was too ditzy to notice.

I think I have an active relationship with way too many deities to properly answer this question lol. I'll go with the first Two though, as They are far more relevant in terms of time I've known Them. I've never chosen any of my deities, they've all chosen me =)

Napi (Blackfoot Creator/Trickster god): He's *always* been around, honestly. I can't remember a time when He hasn't been around. I suppose, my nana who was super-Blackfoot (she didn't even speak English lol) introduced us at some point. I dunno when, must have been when I was little enough where my memories weren't very solid.

Yinepu (Anubis/Inpw/Anpu): He's been around since I was about six or seven. I thought He was an imaginary friend Whom I used to call "Annu." I didn't actually figure out who He was really until third grade and we were studying Ancient Egypt.

Bast revealed herself to me a loonnng time ago when I was a kid, in the form of a stray cat that kept showing up at my house. For years me and my mom were part of an animal shelter rescuing strays (inspired by the cat; she was the one we could never get xD) She later showed up to me in a dream.

Okuninushi came to me via a report on the Japanese creation myth for my one class a few semesters ago. We had to compare different creations stories to the biblical story and since I love Japanese culture I picked Japan. His name jumped right off the page and I just felt drawn to him. He's been with me ever since
