View Full Version : What's Your Personal Style

Style? What's that?
How to tell Azure has spent the day between InStyle magazine and her sewing machine on this very, very cold Saturday: she posts a fashion poll.
Seriously, I'm curious - what does everyone see their taste in clothing as being?

I have no particular style....I just wear what I feel like for that moment when I get dressed. ( I'm definately not up on fashion)

People tend to think I'm a slut with my short dresses and tighter shirts. But, I'm also eccentric, cause I'm the only one who ran around with suede pants before they were a fashion craze, and purple velvet with blue polka dots;).

I voted "sweats or whatever's easy".
For work I prefer my Wranglers, boots and a nice blouse. But due to holiday weight gain my Wranglers dont fit.
So I've bought some less expensive jeans for the mean time. Causual.
For home my style is comfort.

Hmmm.....didn't vote, no category for "Comfortable" and "Depends on the mood, the place and the day...."
Around the house, it's flannel pj pants with a sweater or other top during the cooler weather, at work it's what I have to call "professional casual" ~ when I'm out with a family, I want the public to think I'm just a friend of the family, but have to dress somewhat professionally and for court it's completely professional, suits, etc.
And when I'm with my pagan friends, it could be jeans, pj's or all-out goddess garb :)

I voted Artistic & Ethereal because I tend to create my own style from studying what's hip (I read Lucky & InStyle!) then going to the local consignment stores and creating something that I can afford. I love Arden B and BeBe...stores like that, but can not - and probably will not ever - spend $80+ for a blouse.
I do love clothes! I work for a scientific drug company, so I spend most of the day with scientists...but you'd never guess! I like scarves, eclectic jewelry, boots all year long, etc.
What I need more of are casual, laid-back weekend wear. I"m so tired of jeans. I got some dansko mary-janes for christmas so I'm into the Euro look these days.
Ciao babes!

I put myself under the Goth category, but I think I'd also fit well under Artistic. I do a lot of my own stuff, and people sometimes think it's "off the wall"..but like it.
I like my unique wardrobe. :)

I also put myself in the goth category, but I was torn between that and granola. I'm a lazy goth. I don't really put much effort into it, just as long as it's black, I'll wear it. Hides the chub very well!

I don't know. There wasn't a category for goodwill little boys T-shirts and jeans. 8O That's pretty much all I wear. But I love goodwill and that's where I buy most of my shirts so I guess that's kinda artsy or something. But for the longest time I thought the BSA was a baseball thing. 8O Turns out it’s the Boy Scouts. Go figure.

I would have to go with a mix between the artistic and the comfortable. I try to look nice, but comfort is important, and so is wearing something that has the ability to inspire me. I don't know. Labels are too difficult.

I tend to wear either loose jeans, t-shirt, and over shirt (hawiian style) or an almost solid blue, green, grey or black. If I wear black Ill have jewelry otherwise I go aunatural, no gells in the hair, now super shiny things, I look best in the matte range. I have no peircings (no jewelry though I make it) and no tatoos (who know what Ill need my skin for later?)Im not into brands, why sell other peoples stuff for them? if it lloks nice and fits well then hey thats what matters.
My Robes, some of my winter gear, kitchen and smithing aprons,, and halloween costumes are all hand made, most by me beloved mum.

For work, I dress business casual. I like to dress respectable for work, since I am a teacher. When I get home, I usually put on something really comfortable like sweats. On the weekend, I like to dress really stylish when I go out. So my wardrobe is quite eclectic.

January 19th, 2003, 02:53 AM
I voted hippie-granola, but that's not entirely accurate. I'm in college so my wardrobe consists of "oh my god, I'm late again...what's on the floor and not too badly covered with dust bunnies?!" Hehe...
I'm a weird combination of hippie-goth-lazy-college-sexy-slight prep/punk. *shakes head* Weird. I used to be pure goth, but I grew up. :D
I do like going out dressed provocatively. I figure that since I can do it and get away with it, I might as well flaunt it. ;) lol

I just realized I forgot about me!
Well, it's changed a lot lately, I guess. I really fall more into the first category - rather fashion conscious, but as a footnote, I also tend to make my own style, so artistic also applies.
In grad school a couple of years ago I would have pretty much just qualified as artistic, with maybe a dash whatever's clean thrown in.

at home: my polar fleece pants and a polar fleece top
out: always black, see through, lace, and tight... :) I am out to party! ;)
most of my wardrobe is black, with greys, burgundys and some blues. I am not in style, but wear stuff that a lotof people would say "only suits me" :D

I voted for What Style? I could fit into several categories. Right now it is "Since it is 14*, I am wearing lots of warm, fuzzy layers." Mostly I wear jeans and sweaters or T shirts, with boots, Sketchers or my Doc Maartens (which are finally getting a hole in the toe and they are over 8 years old and now that I am not working I can't afford a new pair! :wah: ).
Going out , when I get the chance, is usually something casual but more hip.
I remember the "good old days" (cue 80's music) when I would not dream of going out in jeans and a t shirt.

I put conservative... but I probably should have put style... what style? I dress like most other students, in sweaters and hoodies, I'm never out of my jeans, except when I go out, when I like to look girly. It's funny, because my best friend Rhino is a full-on stunning gothic maiden with the waist length black hair and clothes to match - people look at us strangely when we're together!

I really don't know what you'd consider my style. I'm not one for brand names. I wear jeans with flare/bell, not too big, and not loose. Constantly jeans. I wear sweaters from black to bright purple and anything in between; tank tops, tees, sweatshirts with or without words or images on them.. Range from all black clothes to bright deep vibrant colors.. Hell I've even worn a lime halter with a white, turquoise and lime hawaiian shirt over it! ;)
I would call myself hippy/gothy/artsy/punky I guess.. I don't really wear makeup either but my hair is black with purple bangs and along the sides of my face.

Good point - the real difference between expense clothing and cheap should be quality of construction and materials, and I will pay for that. If it means my jeans have designer label or whatever, that's just gravy. I have learned through the years to buy quality, and never regret it - it also cuts down on impulse buys. I've also become a master of shopping the sales, and getting the good quality and/or good labels for 50%-75% off.

I'm a mix between goth, and provacative. I dress in big baggy pants and low cut tight shirts (almost always black) and do my makeup really dark around the eyes and all, so most people think I'm goth, but I really wear what's comfy to me.

Typically I'm in a black long sleeved shirt with a band t-shirt over top of it, with old man pants I got at a thrift store, Converse All-stars, topped off with one of the several goofy looking coats I also discovered at the Salvation Army. Very feminine.

I usually wear cheap, mailorder, noname, black jeans - because of my long legs, a pair of brand jeans would cost insanely much. (I got a pair of Wrangler's for my 16th birthday, and they were $60...) - and sweaters. The sweaters - often with large letters/words on them ("Universe", "Red Roc", and my fave: a hood sweater with a fire-colored tribal pattern on the chest and arms) - are always bought in the menswear section, and are size Large or X-Large, so they're all baggy and nice. :D
People likes to label me as "hip-hopper" (because I wear baggy), "satanist" (because I wear black), "rocker" (because I wear the hood up), and various other silly things, though I prove over and over again I cannot be placed in any other box than the "cannot-be-placed-in-a-box" box. ;) ;) ;)

I voted GAP, JCrew but it really depends on my mood. I don't actually buy from GAP, JCrew but I do wear more jeans, etc. I refuse to pay $35 for a t-shirt that has a gap label in it, so I just buy what I can afford. I'm always casual if I'm not a work, but I will dress "artsy & flowing" sometimes and then if it's formal, it's black, sleek with shoes that will kill my feet before the nite's up!

Gaaahh, I've become an old frump. LOL I checked the "I last did laundry in 1997", not because it's actually true, but because it about sums up my attitude towards clothing.
I work from home, so usually I'm wandering around in sweats and an old T-shirt. In the summer, shorts and an old t-shirt.
When I go places, I tend to dress for utility. I like cargo pants (and have since before they were in style) because I don't carry a purse, and that way I can carry around books and have places to put the rocks and junk I seem to always pick up here or there. I figure I'm not trying to impress anybody, nor do I really need to draw attention with my clothes. (Neon blue waist-length hair does that well enough, thank you) I stick to earth tones and black, and usually wear men's clothes. Their pants tend to have more pockets. ;) So basically, I'm a crashing bore when it comes to fashion.
I do dress up once in awhile. For weddings I have an off-white and gold outfit I trot out. For funerals, I dig out my old goth stuff. When I go out somewhere on a date with my hubby, I dig out my old goth stuff with the low neckline and high-slit skirts. I hate dressing up, I just don't dig it like most females seem to. But I like how my hubby acts when I'm showing some leg and some cleavage, so I do it for him sometimes, and I do still love that old goth look that I was so into in high school. :)
But for the most part (like right now...) sweat pants, old t-shirts (usually spattered with paint, LOL), maybe some slippers and a sweatshirt if it's cold enough... Very comfortable! :)

A lot of people would have very empty lives initially! It seems some people just live to categorise and victimise others. Hey, that rhymed. :D
I, for instance, am criticised a lot for, ahem, 'trying to be punk'. My reply to that is always "I never said I was punk". To be honest, I wear whatever clothes appeal to me, I don't wear what I wear to belong to a group or something like that...I just happen to like stuff like baggy jeans, ripped tops etc. But the people who think I'm trying to be something I'm not are just very shallow people I guess...I have personally never claimed to be one thing or the other...I like what I like, and that's it as far as I'm concerned! But it seems some people aren't happy unless they can label you and put you into this neat little box.

There are always going to be labels, so there isn't much point in wondering what would happen if they weren't around. The world wouldn't be able to function very well without them. There are always going to be adjectives that describe something or someone. You don't have to apply them to yourself, but I've found that most of the time (at least with the people I hang out with) the labels are only used to give a clear idea about how someone looks or acts.
If someone is trying to describe what kind of clothing his girlfriend wears, when she is normally seen all in black with black lipstick and white face makeup and knee high combat boots, he might say "Well, she dresses in a very gothic manner." I don't think there is anything wrong with that, as long as the labels aren't used in a damaging way.
I only said that I dress in a very hippyish way because that is the best adjective I can think of to describe it. And it does give you a good mental image of how I dress, doesn't it? It's easier for me to say that then to go through the specifics of all the clothes I wear. I don't consider myself a "hippy", I just always tend to like those kinds of clothes.
There is nothing wrong with saying, "I dress kind of hippyish" or "Most of my clothes look kind of punky" as long as you aren't damaging yourself by only allowing yourself to dress that way to preserve a self-image. It's also a good thing to note that we are on an internet forum, and a lot of people are curious as to how the rest of the people here look, dress, work, and basically live their lives. Sometimes these questions are asked out of mere curiosity, and not the desire to put people into slots or anything like that. It's just a little piece of who you are, and it helps people form a mental image. It is definitely not the entire image.

My style is pretty much described by most as "surfer." I wear long sleeve T-shirts with flowery designs, faded jeans, sandles, cute little tank tops, board shorts... just about anything you'd find at Pac Sun. When I dress up, my style becomes a bit more All-American and preppy.

Wow, its hard to pin-point my 'style' mainly because I'm honestly all over the place. I'm not to into labeling or classifying stuff based on
basic stereotyping, mainly because I have plenty of different reasons for why I wear things that pretty much might have nothing to do with trying to identify with a "subculture". That's not to say I don't find these cultures interesting, because I do, but I'm just not setting out to look as though I belong to them for the sake of impressing others. I just dress the way I want, and I sometimes end up looking like a
[insert label here]. However, I am a 't-shirt and jeans' person. Being comfortable always comes first with me. But if I must classify what I wear I'd say its a weird street/punk/goth/hippie hybrid. On an average day, I'd probably be wearing a dark t-shirt with some cool graphics
(like butterflies, stars, tie-dye ) or a cartoon character ( care bears, marvin the martian ), with some dark, and very loose-fit jeans, but not ass-crack jeans ( I can't stand those ). I'd wear mainly boots and sneaks, but nothing extravagent ( Pay-Less all the way! ). I'm really into accessories though, so there would braclets, necklaces, chokers, earrings, probably silver if not rainbow colored. And I make-up (really just eye shadow and lipgloss), colors from black to blue to pink and purple, so yeah, I'm kinda all over the place.

I picked artistic and ethereal, but I overlap into goth and hippy as well. I guess provactive would also whear since I tend to go for bustiers/corsets and garters for undergarmets.
My mom refers to my style as bohemian and other people have commented that I dress like a goddess. Strangers have actually stopped me to compliment me and ask where I've gotten what I've wearing at the time.

Style? What's style? I'm clean in jeans and tees. Of course I have some nicer clothes for interviews and whatnot, but I rarely wear them, and I bought most of them six years ago!

I'm more goth than anything, but I never take it to an extreme (scads of dark makeup, black lipstick, etc.) unless I am going out to a goth nightclub. I'm too old for that stuff! 8O

I am not nor have i ever been a dictate to fashion and anyone born and rasied in Upper Darby Pa will attest to that one...unless you count jeans and tees as a style...   Im 37 years old and I wear whatever I feel comfortable in. As long as I'm comfortable I don't really care. I'm pretty much classic. T-shirt, jeans. If you want to make me scream and run, ask me to wear a dress and heels LOL

I didn't vote...my style is WAY too athletic.
For a while I was very into nerdy clothes--dress pants, fitted blouses, sweaters, my glasses, and loafers.
Now, I'm back to my "original" look...kids cartoon T-shirts, jeans or skirt, or T-shirt dresses, and cute running shoes. My current faves are Spider Man and Hello Kitty. Of course, I have my nerdy clothes still, that I can wear while working retail.

I would've voted for two:
Artistic and Ethereal and Hippie/Granola
My boyfriend calls me his "Granola Girl," which I love. I love wearing dresses--so comfy! And I love soft floaty fabrics. Except when I'm petsitting!

I voted artistic and etheral, more the artistic , which considering some of the looks i get from people is probably a nice way of saying it lol
As a kid i always had my own sense of what i should wear and now as an adult i get to do it with pride. ( i used to drive my mother wild...oh wait i still do)
The only thing that gets me is rude people who stare and stare with that awful mangaled look on their face. Have a look but there is no need to be rude.
One day i may just say " look at you, you normal" hehehehe

I lean towards goth. I usually only wear band t-shirts and some baggy pants.

I'm not really sure - kind of a hybrid, really. I wear band t-shirts, goth spike bracelets, occasionally I wear bandannas or headscarves, along with black fishnet wristwarmers, other times I'll just wear a pair of faded jeans with a nice black t-shirt. I wear a LOT of black, and a lot of jewellery, and if I want to look dramatic I'll put on some makeup but I'm usually barefaced. :D

Oh man, do I fit that description! I hate dresses. I hate them, I hate them, I hate them. DId I mention that I hate them? LoL
Men's Jeans - because lets face it, they are more comfortable. With my body structure, I have wide hips and a belly (why won't that thing just go away?) and with Women's jeans, I can't fit into them or it looks like I'm walking around with a load. Men's jeans fit perfectly.
Men's tee-shirts - because most Women's shirts don't fit me.
And sandles or my clodhoppers (my boots)

I voted "Provacative, dangerous, a little wild."
I'm a true girly girl and love to feel sexy and feminine. I love high heels, platform boots and shoes, short skirts (hubby is absolutely loving the plaid "schoolgirl" skirts that are hot this fall...I rarely buy into trends, but I simply couldn't resist buying a few ;) ), tight low-rider jeans that flare at the bottom (mainly during the fall and winter) and form-fitting/belly baring tops.
I figure I may as well enjoy wearing provocative and wild clothing while I'm still young enough to get away with it.

Heeh.
I really don't know what my style is. I voted goth, or leaning towards it, 'cause I feel t he most comfortable in black and everybody thinks I'm goth. If I'm goth, I'm a giddy goth O.o
What I would REALLY like my wardrobe to be is Goth and etheral or whatever that was. You know, the light and strangely pretty type stuff. The expensice stuff.
I hardly get to buy myself clothes cause I never have money and people always give me clothes. Yup, 98% of my clothes are hand-me-downs. My bestest friend took me clothes shopping for my birthday, so that made me happy. Didn't see anything I REALLY wanted, but I got a few things that I like good enough.
Anyway... um. Rambling time over.

I went with provacative, dangerous and wild, though I'm not sure how provocative I am.
My wardrobe is definately wild as I do not believe in formal wear or casual wear. I refuse to wear anything that isn't completely off the wall and 'fun'. When I look down at my feet, I don't want to see boring brown shoes, I want to see bright orange converse sneakers with Rainbow Brite laces.
I never dress for the occassion as I find the entire idea absurd. I'm very defensive about my choice to wear what I want, when I want, wherever I want and will not indulge in anything unless I can. I'll skip a funeral, a wedding, a job, whatever if I'm going to have a billion restrictions on what I am allowed to wear.
So basically anything from shirts with sarcastic commentary such as "Stupidity is not a crime, so you're free to go" to my orange shoes, to my pants made out of a material with various constellations on them that glow in the dark to my black outfit with various metal rings hooked all over it, to at leats a dozen rather eccentric scarves, vests, hats and whatever else I can get my hands on that most people would consider "eww" or weird. I'm also very whimsical with my clothes. If the mood strikes me to wear two different shoes, I will.
I refuse to pay a fortune for clothes and adore thrift stores or clothes made especially for me (especially since it's so bloody hard to shop if you're very thin).

My taste in clothing hasn't changed in the past 30+ years -- loved long skirts then, love them now. Love cotton tunics from India, love silver jewelry (and labradorite, my very favorite stone). Love denim, especially long, full denim skirt with POCKETS. I have a fringed buckskin jacket that I beaded myself..
I'm your basic hippie chick, albeit a tad older these days. My mother always said that living in California (near San Francisco) for a while when I was in high school ruined me... That was during 1967, for those who remember, the height of the Height Ashbury hippie thing. My folks always hoped for more of a social conformist but it never happened.
I did get to make a good point one day, though: "Mom, I'm a grandmother -- don't you think it's a matter of personal taste by now and not adolescent rebellion?!"
Sometime after that, my folks told me that they'd thought about it and decided to stop complaining about my clothes. There's always hope!

I voted Gap/All American, but that's not the whole story. I don't really wear any colors other than black, gray, and maybe some cranberry; the more black, the better. And on the weekends, or if I go out, I tend to lean a bit more towards the gothy look. I'm clean cut at work because I have to be (I work for a very prestigious university which shall remain nameless), but on my time I try to be a bit more exciting. I do like to combine preppy and goth, i.e. wearing a black corset under a black blazer with black pants and boots, and of course, lots of great jewelry. I don't really do jewelry on a regular basis though, because it gets annoying. Did that make any sense?

As long as it's comfortable..I'd live in jeans and t-shirts if I could get away with it. I just try to keep things as simple as possible. I gave up on "style" and "fashion" many moons ago.....I just never seem to make it work.

This is my style:
I own about a 7 - 10 day supply of clothes, I wear them all, wash em, wear them again
it's all T-shirts and jeans (or loose fitting comfortable pants)
I don't own dress clothes/shoes, at all, and I plan on walking into the interview for my next job (which will be my career) wearing just that, T-shirt and pants
but, then again, i'm going for a video game developer job, and they're...casual, to say the least
(quote from a Lead Director at a video game company)
"We don't care what you wear to the interview, as long as you look presentable, if you show up wearing a suit and tie, we'll look at ya kinda funny, but it won't harm your interview any"

I have lately been into alot of contrast. Perhaps a light solid colored button down blouse with black pants or a dark shirt with light pants. I'm also really into solid colored pastel tee shirts. This is the first time in years I have worn pastels though.

Like a lot of the others said, it depends on the mood I'm in. Most of the time, it's a toss up between athleticwear, shorts and a cropped tank top, or flared jeans and cropped top. If it's comfortable, I'll wear it.

I wear almost anything i can find....purple jackets, yellow pj pants, orange t-shirts....a grey old man jacket, but then again i have tons of black clothing. i don't care what people think and see me as cause really they are only clothes. Something to cover my body, personailty is way better then any clothing item. I don't see the point in buying the most expensive name brand....as long as it looks alright im happy.

My entire wardrobe consists of 12 black tee-shirts and 4 pairs
of green corduroy pants. My only concession to whimsy would
have to be my collection of excessively girly novelty socks
adorned with butterflies, flowers, faeries, etc... an odd quirk
for a weathered old curmudgeon, I know. Never could account
for it.

I love youchy feeling stuff, textures, and 90% of my clothes are black or very dark.
But the other 10% are bright enough to hurt your eyes!
I don't accesorize, and I bathe several times a week. I stay clean and I smell nice most of the time.
If I feel like dressing up, my clothes match and I wear perfume. :)
Mu makeup, when I feel like wearing it, goes from simple and natural to intense and dramatic- I've been known to do my whole face very soft and natural, but then use ruby red glitter as an eyeliner, thick and heavy.

My style is like me, eclectic! I go from one thing to another, and lucky for me I have a big enough closet to handle my addiction. Yesterday I was all decked in a burgundy and black Indian dress with black gothic jewelry and lace tights...today I'm in striped boot-cut jeans with a chunky sweater. I love clothes, and shoes and jewelry. I wear just about every color, but have a lot in the "sand" category for some reason.
