In montana we have an interesting sport known as speach n debate. This includes serious, humorus, classical solo duo and interpretational speaking peaces, Team debate (pure facts) Lincoln-douglas debate (my event -phylosophy) mem, orized public address, impromptu, and extemperanious speaking. (and mime thougth theyre not actually "speachies" we likem anyways ;)
I got 8th place in divisional whick means I get to got to state and debate people from all over starting with the first place debatopr from the east (theyre not really very good in the other divisions as far as debate goes, theyre more drama types :) this is so sweet! we got first place as a teem in drama (for class A schools) and 3rd place in speach.
Anyone else out theyre a speachy?

I'm a pre-law major, so I have to do a bunch of public speaking. I'm in my first year, so I haven't gotten to do any competitions yet. That sounds like fun! Good luck Grey!

Well, I did Policy debate a while ago, but I've got friends who've done LD so I know what you're talking about. Congratulations:)

Oh, my.
No one -- NO ONE -- has ever heard of this outside of our little NYS niche! I did this for 4 years in high school! Lost in every single competition for 3 straight years (yeah, I know, it builds character), then magically began kicking butt in my senior year. I did humor, drama, original speeches, you name it. Made it to States in my senior year, but we all lost our shirts to the professionally trained kids from The City.
Thanks for bringing back some good memories.
Break a leg! Enjoy yourself!

WE TOOK DRAMA SWEEPS IN STATE!!!! our teacher/coach has to get his hair made into an afro on wensday.... he bet us.
I won 2 and lost 2 in debate... But my loses were against the #1 in the northern division and the # 2 from my home, the western division... it was a cool trip, lots of fun. Took alot of naps (its a 12 hour drive) got alot of emails (some cute drama girls ;) and a bit to much food. besides some anxiety (not like me) it was a blast!

(hand high in the air with a pure "pick me pick me" written all over her face)
lol
sad..but true
I graduated at age 19 taking with me on my way to change the world (of course) a degree in Philosophy...emphasis on Logic and Argumentation!
Better known as a BS in Philosophy...
laughable - but quite true indeed.
(we can always get the BS tounge in cheek reference - yes?)
Yep - that's right - folks you can actually get a degree in "how to argue and win" - funny huh.
Well. of course I started out wishing to be a great philosopher and just learn to use the other half of my brain...but alas - it seems I have a knack for debate.
I found this "debate" skill most useful in politics during my life - and it serves a purpose in raising children (although they truly hate you for being a logical parent)
but other than using logic to outwit your debate or argument partner -
it serves LITTLE purpose really!
Looking back now...geesh, I could have spent more time studying history or another fabulous language or --- geesh - even used that time and energy for some social good.
But knowing what to pick 27 years ago...is my specialty THESE Days! LOL
here's hoping, Grey that we have a slight difference at some point and can "engage" in some lively debates *wink*
Congratulations on all your hard work.....

Isn't it great to win?!
Sabrina, my story is kinda similar to yours. I did drama & humor in speach, went on to do amateur theater for several years (had to quit when the first pregnancy made it impossible to cast me :-D ), and became quite adept at writing introductions for everyone's pieces -- this after I couldn't be brief if you paid me. Now I've had several poems and 2 short stories published and am 2/3 finished with a book. What I learned in speach (not the least of which was how to get up in front of a roomful of friends and strangers and hold my own) has colored and helped shape my life.

I do humorous in speech. :D Granted I'm not very good but I like it. Last year our team only had 4 people. 8O But we have a *ton( more people this year(whoo 16! 8O ). I ended up with a speech nickname and everything "Speechy Beachy".
We've never even gotten to state but I'm sure it's very cool Grey. Congrats! We *saw* the people who got to state last year. 8O Anyone on your team in hurmorous doing "The Santaland Dairies"? By the end of the season I can recite just about any cut of that piece.
But you guys must know about the secret international symbol for speech, the coat hanger (our team gets kinda bored waiting for the judges). ;) It's got a whole history and everything.
