When you're reading for someone else, should you ask them what their queary is? I can think of reasons for and against - for example, what if it's too personal? Or if you subconciously interpret the cards in one way to favour their question, but in fact they were telling you something different? But, if you don't ask, I suppose you could be gong off on a tangent that has absolutely nothing to do with their question... 8O

I did my first proper reading last night...well, three of them :D It was scary how accurate they were. For example, I interpreted fr my sister all about how she's soon going to travel, perhaps because of an argument, or because of home situations. I knew that she had an argument with her husband, and lover, and I knew she was living with my mum until things picked up and she could find a house of her own again, and things were a bit tense there...but she later told me she was writing to cruise ships to see if they had any jobs in creches going (she's a child carer) so she could see the world! :o I thought it was a bit of beginners luck at first, but then I did myself a reading later, when I was alone, and it was just spot on. I just want to thank everyone here for all their help! (especially Myst for her in depth tarot course) :D Thank you all!

I think for beginners it's very important to have A question. It helps keep you focused, which in turn will give a better reading. If someone as me to do a reading, just a general one....I ask THEM questions so that I can formulate a question for the cards. Genreal readings, for me tend to just lay there. I also think that as you become more experienced general readings become more lively.

Truthfully I've only done 2 where where the querent didn't have a question - just wanted a general reading. The first was just BLAAH. This could've been cause it was the first reading I did with my querent present.
The second was better. Acutally kinda upsetting....but on target. I had gained some experience by this time.

I do feel that you need to be able to preform general readings cause lots of times that's what folks want, so that is what I'm working on at this time.

OK, enough rambling!

Quite truthfully (and this takes balls, believe me), I NEVER ask the Querent the question except when I am doing a reading via the Internet. I tell them to shuffle the cards and think about what they want to ask, never ask what they wanted, and lay them out and read - cold! I feel that telling me the question influences my preception of the cards and my perception of the answer. I find this method works for me since I get no preconceived notions about the Querent or their questions. At the end of the reading I finally ask 'Did this reading have anything to do with the question you asked?' Not a method for the feint of heart!

A student of mine - an older man who says he read cards as a college student - says he had the Querent write the question down on a piece of paper- never opened it- put it under the discarded pack of cards. After the reading, he would open the paper up to read the question. I asked him what this theatrical moment had to do with the reading...and he said he had them write it down so that during the reading they couldn't change their mind or alter the question!
