I'm wondering how many of you have a familiar or see the necessity for one. I can hear the guiding voice of mine but cannot see/visualize the entity :/

I do have a familiar, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary to have one. I love having him around, though. I guess I would describe it as having an extra dose of positive energy around-- nice to have, but it's not the end of the world if it's not there. I love mine, though, he's such a godsend.

let me expand my original question. do you have a material familiar (pet or the likes) or is your familiar spiritual? Sorry for so many questions, but knowledge is power ;)

A familiar is not a pet. It's a spirit that takes the form of an animal in order to aid the witch in her magic, often feeding off her energy...kinda like a servitor.

I've run into a familiar before. I was on a ride along with a State trooper (awesome i know!) and i had never encountered him before. Normally when i first meet people i'm very quiet and "keepy to myselfy". But, when we met it was instant comfort. Now you probably think that "it was just because he was a cop". Well, maybe. But, we both had this sudden realization that somehow we knew eachother. I'm great at remebering faces and remebering where i say him but I couldn't figure this one out. It honestly felt like we've know eachother. Maybe he's a comrade from my legonaire days XD

sounds more like you knew each other in a past life or you and this person are soul mates.(and soul mates doesn't necessary mean a romantic/lover partnership.)

I personally disagree. I know that my cat is my familiar. Maybe I'm in a unique situation or something, but he is what he is. I don't think there is anything odd about that, either.

The Domestic Cat are our family's animal totem. Once we reach a certain age we attract cats - bunches of cats and it only happens to one person per generation. This has been the case for several generations spanning over a 100 years!
Some thing one can learn from the cat is you know your own spirit and need no validation by others.
I can not find the source on line but cats are associated with guardianship and simply "knowing" what eludes most - This very much lines up with our energy as a family along with independence and unpredictability!!!
If you are not causing harm and hurting innocent beings then do not let others tell you what is spiritually true for you - I have been told I can not exist - okayyyyyyy I have had people insist I have to have this that or the other. .. okay maybe they have to but they are not me and I am not them.
I understand many are trying to help but we are all as we are designed to be and no one here in the physical plane of existence has cornered the market on the one and only possible spiritual reality!

If familiars CAN be physical beings or pets, I definitely haven't encountered them yet. My cat... is absolutely NOT my familiar. xD He is an idiot. A psychotic, bizarre, none-too-clever ball of fur and occasional loves (but more often ankle-attacking), but he is not anything metaphysical or -
Or at least I really hope he isn't. D: That's... kind of a CONCERNING thought. I'd fear for the world at large. xD
My dog isn't either. She's just a bundle of sweet, unconditional loves. <3 But definitely not what everyone here has been discussing.

I can understand that. I had a cat that I thought might be my familiar...but after watching him sit around and lick his anatomy I figured there had to be something more to a familiar

Could the familiar be considered a spirit guide? If so then mine happens to be a raven.....I know when he comes to me, I better be paying attention! :hyper:

The literature seems to agree with your viewpoint. The idea of a witch's familiar is generally one of two things:
1. an unseen spirit that acts on behalf of the magician or witch.
2. a spirit evoked into a physical animal (or object) to act on behalf of the Magician. Agrippa among many was said to always have been followed by his familiar in the shape of a large black dog (some argue that this is the original source of the black "demonic" hound in Goetre's Faust).

I don't think the two terms (familiar and spirit guide) are interchangeable. What makes a familiar unique is that it is a spiritual entity under the command of the magician. A spirit guide is a psychopomp and initiator - your teacher not servant.

I once had a marmalade tabby that I was incredibly close with. I'm guessing sharing each others thoughts/feelings doesn't count as a familiar. I've been inexplicably drawn to cats all my life.
It's like they've got the keys to the universe...An ancient secret waiting to be revealed...
I've also heard about dogs and cats being able to see spirits/ghosts.
So does a familiar find you or do you find them?

I hate when people insist there is only one real spirituality. I believe that what ever is out there reveals itself differently towards every individual, in a way they can most relate to. I find your post very intriguing.

I felt I had a connection, a spiritual one, to a cat but not my cat. he is a wild cat i first meet when i was meditating out side in my front yard. and he just kept coming around, i started to put food out when i came out side he would just come out of no where. he would sit and watch me meditate when i would go on walks he pop out. have seen im in a while but he comes by ever now and again. :candle:
