Namaste
Sticking to your Dharma and fulfilling it is very important in Hinduism. In the Bhagavad Gita especially, Krishna tells Arjuna that he must fight the Kauvaras, as it is his duty to do so, being a Kshatriya (of the warrior caste). Krishna even went on to say that it is better to fulfill your own Dharma then to try to go after the Dharma of another (the bad auditions on American Idol pops to mind). The point is we all play a very important role in the world, and it is best to continue doing what you were born to do, instead of chasing after things you wish you could do but cannot for whatever reason, as it helps the world stay in balance and contributes to it in a positive manner. As an example, you wouldn't be very happy doing something you were not destined to do.
As I was not born into a caste, it was hard for me to see for myself for a while. I still do believe in Dharma, however, and believe that it is important for me to fulfil it; at one point I was convinced I was to be a professional singer; only until I realized that, while I had a good voice, it wasn't spectacular...also I'm shy and nervous, have no stage presence, and I can't really draw in the audience (unless I speak to them). Only when I let go of what I thought I was destined to be did things get better, and life started moving me in the direction of what I was actually meant to be.
What do you think of Dharma? Do you believe in destiny and what one is born to be and do? Let me know!
