I'm from the Houston area and a few years back when hurricane Ike hit a lot of trees went down. My friend and I found what looked like a thick vine wrapped around a particular stump. This section of that vine just called to me and I cut it from the wreckage.
It's unique and I want to make sure I make this correctly, as I'm a new Pagan. I've searched but can't find any photos online of this particular vine. I couldn't even tell you what kind of tree it came off of. I haven't sanded or done anything to this, this is just how the surface looks naturally

oo. I love how your thumb fits into it! let us know what you wind up doing with it, if anything :)

I'm hoping to make it into a wand and carve the wrap around thumb piece into a snakes head

Most likly a grape vine. They get rapped around small bushes & cause it to grow out around the vine. This makes the bush twisted & when big enough they make great canes. I have 4-5 of these canes. We use to swing on wild grape vines when a child, some my be an inch or in diamiter.

I agree with the grape identification, my mother used to bring in the vines from her plants and dry them all the time, they looked very similar.

I don't know about the grapevine, but in researching Wisteria it mentions that it grows in/around pine trees...the shattered tree we freed this piece from was a pine.
Whew...now does anyone know if there are magickal properties to the wisteria wood? I found something that said wisteria oil is good for protection but nothing about the wood.

well...i found out from a landscaper friend that this IS grape vine! I found a grove across the street from my new place. Sadly, they're tearing this wooded area down, but I've been looking around over there and found more lovely pieces that I'd like to work with. I'll post pics as it progresses :)
