Last night, I had a nightmare that a veeery close person to me killed themselves, which was only half the dream :(. Personally, I believe this dream happened because that person attempted to a few weeks ago and didn't succeed, and I'm still trying to de-stress about it, but the dream made me think of something.

How can you tell that your dreams have crossed the line and have become something along the lines of "prophetic"?

...er, is there a thread about this already? I looked and couldn't find one :(

BTW, I do not believe that the dream I had was anything like that. XD

From my personal experience... the only way to tell if a dream was 'foretelling' or not was... after the fact. Hopefully someone more experienced than me will be more helpful :D

Do you keep a dream journal?

No, I don't dream enough for it to be worth the effort XDYes you do. Its biological fact we all dream several dreams per every night, we just dont remeber. A journal trains your brain to remember. Every night, start by opening one page in a journal dedicated to one thought you will write, "I will remember my dreams". That should be the very last action and thought before you close your eyes. Even if it takes 100 nights of repeating to do this, keep it up till you start to remeber. Keep the journal by your bed so you can do this in bed! In time you will begin to remember more and then more. Always right anything you remember, no matter how tiny, as soon as you wake before you get out of bed! If your pressed for time at least make a note in that journal! Say, f all you remeber one morning is a tree and nothing else. Just a plain, unsignificant tree and nothing happens, theres just nothing...write down.."Tree".
This does work, For some quick, for some longer. It takes effort though and patients.

As for how to tell prophecy from just a dream...time and individuality. We dont all have the same way. We learn to tell with time and attention.
For me its numbers. Every dream I have that happens 3 or more times happens, the end, period. So I keep a mental count of dreams that felt suspicious. If hit 3 over any time period, it will happen. Even if it takes years for a dream to repeat the 3rd time...its going to happen. Thats how it is for me. How it will be for you, only you will learn.

Yeah, I knew about the dream-every-night thing, I'm just lazy when I type. XD Maybe I should quit that, eh... :3

One reason I never could keep up with a dream journal as a teenager (I had loooots of dreams then) is because I always had disturbing nightmares. >_> Back then, I thought it would just be best to try and forget the dream instead of writing it down. I semi-regret it, but it doesn't matter, as I remember them anyway, to this day. Vividly, actually. I should write them down... *opens Evernote*

Thing is, I never have a "good" or "neutral" dream. They're rare for me, really. It's been like that my whole life, always with the nightmares. DX When I was nine, my dad had to teach me to "lucid dream" (I believe that's what it's called) in the middle of a nightmare so I could either change it or wake myself up (which is usually easier). Actually, last night, I had to wake myself from the nightmare from my first post. :( Woke up semi-crying-but-trying-not-to. Because of this, I sort of like not remembering my dreams, but I can't help but wonder what (good) keeping track of them would do for me.

I think this is the longest post I've ever made on MW. 8O

I was plagued by nightmares from childhood, as far back as I can remember, babyhood, till my mid thirties. I hated sleeping it was so bad.
I too battled them with lucid dreaming practice and at first it was easier to wake myself up than change them. But then I had to go back to sleep....back comes the nightmares!
On and off I tried and failed, but finally, in my 30's I stuck to it. I worked to remember and to try my hand with lucid dreaming to change them. I decided to not stop trying. I was done with nightmares and wanted good sleep and dreams that were pleasure and I did succeed! It was hard as hell and took years but I won. Now Its extremely rare I have a nightmare and if one tries to start, I turn the channel without having to wake up! :)
The other pluses were the multiple types of dreams I have that are awesome!! I rarely have any boring mundane dreams. They are either lucid and fabulous or just down right different!! I even was a fish in one and had a blast jumping up a waterfall!! LOL
I learned that by learning about my dreams and mastering the fear of the nightmares, I opened a door to another realm and experience that is bigger and more than I ever imagined!

In order for you to know what dreams are prophecy and which are not, and what various drams mean and so on, you have to get to know your dreams. If you are not ready to really apply yourself, thats ok. Someday you will be. :)

For me, they didn't come back if I woke up then fell back asleep. Sometimes waking myself up is hard, though. I've literally felt scared and trapped in a nightmare, where the room was shrinking on me, going to crush me... It felt like a good 15 minutes before I was able to get myself up (no telling how long it actually took, of course). One time I held my breath in my sleep while in my dream I was drowning at the ocean floor, swimming upwards for dear life... after I "died" (centimeter away from the surface, of cooourse), I woke up and it took a few seconds, but I realized that I still wasn't breathing (O__o). I don't think my sleep apnea probably has anything to do with that, as I woke up on my side and the apnea doesn't kick in then (only when I lie on my back). It seems like if I don't figure out what's going on and get myself up, I always always always die in the dream and then wake up. My therapist said that that's weird and uncommon, but somehow I don't believe her.

The nightmares got so bad in my teen years that even to this day, when something that really scares me or gets a huge emotional response from me happens, my knee-jerk reaction is to check and see if I'm in reality. When I do that in dreams, I'm able to get myself up. Is that how it is for you?

lolol I hope a bear wasn't in that dream, you'd be lunch! XD

I'm wondering if "breathing" and "throat" mean something in my dreams. That's always the cause of death: asphyxiation, drowning, throat slit by a random guy... I even had a dream where my mom got decapitated and another where she served my 4-year-old nephew's head to me for dinner. D: A friend of mine once suggested that I was murdered in one of those ways in a past life and it's still bugging me. At the time, I didn't believe in past lives, but I'm starting to wonder D:

Wow, that was a rambly post. Forgive me~ 8O

Randomly, did you do "reality checks" or notice "dream signs" in order to keep up the lucidity?
(I got that term here: http://youtu.be/e3GJTkG60X4)

First, regarding the propensity toward throat related nightmares, it sounds like your subsconscious is telling you that your throat chakra needs work.

That kind of dream, and having a blocked or damaged throat chakra, is associated with feeling like you cannot speak your mind or that no one is listening to you in your waking life. It also manifests sometimes with stage fright, and throat related illnesses.

I suggest carrying a piece of lapis lazuli or iolite crystal.

Some people trigger lucid dreams by associating an action with becoming aware that you are dreaming, such as looking at your hand. If you think on this association every night before bed, eventually every time you see your hand in a dream it will become lucid.

I no longer have nightmares very often. Part of this is because my subconscious isn't creative enough to come up with anything scarier than things I've really seen. The rest is because a dream becoming a nightmare is my primary trigger for lucid dreaming.

Nightmares are effectively your subconscious screaming at you, they happen because it's been trying to send you a message and you're just not getting the point.

I've never really thought about how I know a dream is prophetic. I just kinda know. They feel different I guess.

On second thought, prophetic dreams leave me when I wake up with a sense of "that dream was important" and they don't fade as I wake up and start my day, the way most dreams do. That's how it works for me, I don't know about anyone else.

I have been remiss in writing in my dream journal lately. I have chronic fatigue syndrome and a bad habit of laying in bed until I have no more time and absolutely have to get up right now, no time to write. One of the lessons I am meant to learn in this particular incarnation is getting up off my duff and doing what I must in spite of a body that refuses to cooperate in several different ways.

May you find what you seek,

I've only attempted working with chakras once, and I stopped because it was too difficult. Yeah, I know that it's going to be difficult at first, obviously, but it wasn't really up there on my priorities list.

That makes sense, people who claim to listen to me only... repeat back what I say and when I'm finished talking, they say nothing and just sit there. Looking at me. Like I'm supposed to keep going. Meanwhile I'm sitting there staring back at them like "Anybody home, douchebag?" I hate the awkwardness.

It's one of those things where it just seems like everybody else in the world is going crazy, but the only common denominator in those situations is... me. So it has to be me, but I honestly can't think of why. I give them PLENTY to respond with, but they just sit there. It's like some big, universal prank being pulled on me. Rather annoying.

I would suggest that the dreams were related to my not being able to tell my family about my path, but those dreams happened way before I converted or even thought about this sort of thing at all. o.o

If I come across one, I'll be sure to pick it up, after some research as to what they do and what they look like. :D

Turquoise is also good, and easier to find, but it's kind of expensive.
