Hestia
May 24th, 2001, 01:30 PM
I just recieved a response from a message I posted (just a basic introduction) on another board which was "I don't mean to be rude or anything but you do know what the Hestians did, right?" I'm sure it's in reference to the handle I use, Hestia. I just tried to a search but only came up with basic info on the goddess, and lots of episodes from Xena. I'm still waiting for another reply on my post but thought in the meantime to ask here. Thanks you guys.

Well, I found this:
In Greek mythology she was the virgin goddess of the hearth, family, and peace, and the inventor of domestic architecture. She was the daughter of Cronus and Rhea and Zeus's sister. Of all the Olympians, she is the mildest, most upright and most charitable.

and am still looking.
Found this:
Hestia, in Greek mythology, virgin goddess of the hearth, the eldest daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. She was believed to preside at all sacrificial altar fires, and prayers were offered to her before and after meals. Although she appears in very few myths, most cities had a common hearth where her sacred fire burned. In Rome, Hestia was worshiped as Vesta, and her fire was attended by six virgin priestesses known as vestal virgins.

and found this:
Hestia is Hearth, the goddess who never leaves home, Olympus, and never takes part in the struggles of men or gods. Some have said that the name of Hestia is one of those names of deities which was not known to the ancient Egyptians. However, Hestia, who some have considered the chief of the goddesses, is the first born of the OLYMPIANS and was propitiated even by the Scythians, who called her Tabiti. Hestia, who discovered how to build houses, extends her power over altars and hearths and States, and she was given the protection of the town hall. Therefore all prayers and sacrifices end with this goddess, because she is the guardian of the innermost things.
She is a virgin goddess, and not liking Aphrodite's works, the goddess of love never can ensnare her. Both Poseidon and Apollo wished to marry her, but she refused them, and touching Zeus' head, she swore an oath that she would be a maiden all her days. So instead of marriage Zeus granted that her place should be in the very midst of the house. And for that reason mortals do not hold banquet without offering to Hestia both first and last, and so was done in Elis too, because there they sacrificed first to Hestia and secondly to Zeus.

Thanks for all your help! All the information I have on Hestia are pretty much the same thing. I couldn't find anything that indicated something weird or that refered to a group called the Hestians. I think you're right ew, maybe this person might have seen one too many episodes of Zena. I tried to post those links but couldn't seem to get back into the forum. Oh well, teaches me to stay put here at the porch! :)
