Sea-going explorations have always fascinated me, including the ones that led into the unknown Arctic.

The above article details the ill-fated 1913-14 expedition while at the same time providing a little interactive fun (remember those 'choose your own adventure' books?). It's difficult for me to fathom the strength of will it took from these men to continue on as they did.

That was cool but I think I would have died. :)

This was on MSNBC and it gives the brief story about an expedition in the Antartic in 1913. It has a twist. At major junctions where life or death choices needed to be made in the story, the reader is given the options that the explorers did and you need to choose one before you continue reading the story. This is to let you see if you would have made the same choices as the guys did back in 1913. I think MSNBC should have more interactive things like that rather than polls.

I made almost all the same choices but was comforted that the two I made were logical choices and one of them would have actually been the better choice for the expedition.

Umm I hate to tell you this but the thread just below this one is the same topic. :( Hey at least you picked a good one. :)

LOL, Alaiyo ~ seems like we were of the same mind when it came to this link. ;)

I've gone ahead and merged both our threads into one. :)

Yvonne, I agree ~ I highly doubt I would have survived!

You can always fall back on the old cliche "great minds think alike"

Well acording to the choices given in that I didn't make it from the get go lol but at least I would have tried :)

Well I think what made me reason it out was that I had seen the documentary on Shackelton's Antartic expedition SO many times I literally went, "Well Shackleton would have done this or Frank Wild would have done that or Chippie would been like..."

I like the interactive bit. It reminds of that old game "Oregon Trail" we played on computers when floppy disks were real floppy disks. I think only one time did I get my who wagon train to Oregon with most of our money and everyone alive. Usually I'd lose one or two people to cholera along the way but was real good at keeping us fed, keeping us on course and trading.

I like those type of games. I have a civilaztion building one that takes place in Greece that I can easily become addicted to. If I could find an "Oregon Trail" like one I'd be in hog heaven.

Hey, Alaiyo ~ it appears that Oregon Trial is available on a CD, if you feel like recapturing your childhood: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005LBVS/macinfindcom/002-8064399-5638453

Is this the empire building one you have: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005N9A7/qid=1044048308/sr=5-3/ref=cm_lm_asin/002-8064399-5638453?v=glance

And here's one that incorporates mythology: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006GEX2/qid=1044048431/sr=-3/ref=sr__3_etk-vg/002-8064399-5638453?v=glance&s=videogames&n=468642

I remember when floppies were floppy too ~ I still can't quite get used to calling the small disks that. ;)

Thanks so much. Now I know what to hint at for my birthday... It didn't occur to me that it might be updated at all, with like real pics and color.

I also remember the Apple 2/e and teachers who were expected to teach us programming languages they barely mastered themselves.

If this is the same story I watched on tv a week or two ago, then my very first choice would have been different. I would never have gone exploring in the cold and snow and ice. ICK. Just call me a homebody, eh?

Lunacie, that is a surefire way to survive!

By the way, it was a Dateline special the night of the Superbowl. :)

Yep, that's the one I watched then. I've seen pictures of frostbite and it isn't my idea of adventure or fun. Besides I can't grow a beard to keep my face warm. * chuckle *
