View Full Version : Rune Spreads?

Hi everyone!
Ive just started out learning all the runes and made my own, first set last weekend. I got 24 Jasper stones and painted them with Ice Blue paint and clear nail poilsh over the top :) They look very stricking and beautiful and I can feel that they are very powerful!
Up until now I havent really dont any research into the different types of Spreads you can use with Runes. I have used them with Tarot readings and they have been brilliant at backing up all the issues that arouse.
Now I'd like to just try Runes reading so I can really learn all the meanings and really get a feel for them ~ So my question is ~ does anybody know of a really good spread for runes?
I did a search and found these two sites
http://www.magickalmoon.com/reedtree/Runes/spreads.htm#spre
http://www.castleamazon.com/psychic/runes/spreads.htm
Which are brilliant :D
Id love to hear of some more, so I'd thought I'd ask ~ anyone out there got any good ones?
:D

Hi Silver!
Ya know, you could always use tarot spreads to read the stones. :D I feel they work just as well. :sunny:
When I was getting into Runes, I liked to use the directions.(North, East, South, West) I would lay the first stone in the east position, then south, west, north and in the middle (spirit...or just tying the reading together/outcome) East are your thoughts and ideas...your mental state/attitude. South as your creativity and passions. West for your emotions and relationships. North for prosperity and finances. I also used this layout when I would cast my gemstones and read with them. :D (Rose Quartz, Hematite, Onyx, tiger's eye, jasper, pyrite, unikite, Smokey Quartz, Clear Quartz, Malacite, Citrin, Moonstone, adventurine, amethyst, etc. I would use their properties to interpret. I also used "Celtic Magic" by DJ Conway to help interpret with the color of the stones.)

Babes you are always such a great help to me!!
I thought about using the Tarot spreads but then thought Id like to learn some traditional Rune Spreads to learn with and then go mad with lots of other ones :)
I will try out the directions spread tonight and let you know how I got on next week (as Im away for the weekend) I love reading with the elements in mind!
Thanks and thanks for the great idea about casting with Crystals!! I love Crystals :heartthro and have quite a few different ones that I could cast with.
Is that book you mentioned good? "Celtic Magic" by DJ Conway? I may put it on my list to get because it sounds interesting and I trust your judgement :)

"Celtic Magic" is pretty good. I use the "coin in the bowl of water" spell often (there, didn't THAT whet you appetite?). I have a lot of soggy coins. :p
Re: Rune spreads- ya can't go wrong with just holding them in your hands, thinking about what ya wanta know, raising them several inches above your table (or whatever you're reading on), & pull your hands apart, letting the Runes fall as they will. I begin with the one closest to me with the sigil up, & follow the "energy trail". You don't have to turn over every Rune: you'll be looking primarily at the ones turned up, & the ones that may be covering/covered by/touching the "up" ones. And I wouldn't get in a tizzy about "reversed". Consider all aspects of each Rune. What aspect(s) seems to apply to what you asked? How do the Runes next to it affect it? Etc.
Give it a whirl, & let us know how it works for you.
PS-I'd love to see a photo of your Runes. They sound very awe inspiring. :sunny:

Thanks Rick! I will take a picture for you over the weekend and post it up here next Tuesday for you and all to see :D
The way you described is just how Ive been reading already ~ I just ask a question, dig my hand in my pouch, rustle about, then allow a few to stay in my hand ~ whatever feels right then I throw them out before me onto a cloth and read from them.. Closest first then following round ~ they go so well with Tarot cards like this I have found. I think this is such a simple but effective and excellent way :D
Just curious to other spreads... Hope you liked the links :)
(p.s Have you received your dirt Rick?) :)

...unless it's waiting for me when I get home.
Yes, you can do some out of the bag. I sometimes pull 3 (one at a time) to give me a "past, present, future" on something. I use all of the Runes when I'm doing a full cast; never considered just pulling out a handful. Thanks, Grasshopper! :D

When it comes to casting or drawing your runes, any form that feels right and is consistant for you...is right for you. I use several methods in my work and it all depends on the circumstance and issues presented. I have developed these skill, however, through many years of study and various experiments. Also, reading other authors points-of-view and books based on runic studies, can give you an even broader spectrum.
But regardless of all that, I must reiterate by staing that what feels right for you, is the right thing to do. ;)
Have a magical day!

Yo rick:
if i bought a bag with runes carved on wood from my local store, clear their energies when i get home and concecrate and meditate with them filling them with my own energy.
Wouldn't they be just as powerful as if i made them myself?
I know that nothing can really substitute for creating ones own set but i am just curios.
ps: doesn't it feel good being in the hundreds post figure now :).
kinda makes one feel important (lol).

I see nothing wrong with using Runes made by someone else. As you've pointed out, there are ways to make them "yours". It's only my opinion, nothing in the lore or tradition, but I feel a person's first set (maybe even first few sets) SHOULD come from someone else; and when a person does make a set, they should pass on one of the other sets, etc. Kinda like recycling. :D

What happens if the blank rune (wyrd) occurs in a spread?
Ankou
June 11th, 2001, 12:51 AM
I think there are two schools of thought on the Wyrd rune. For the most part it is said to have originated in the 1950's I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that) so it's not really part of an original rune set. Which makes sense since the runes were used for writing and how would you write a blank symbol? *smile*
However others do take it into consideration and give it a meaning for divination purposes. I don't use it and haven't studied up on it too much but I believe that it means fate or something similar to karma. I've even seen people say that the one good reason for including a blank rune in a set is to use it incase you ever lose one of the other runes.
If it comes up in a spread then you would read it like you would any other rune by taking it's meaning into consideration for the spot in which it's in as well as the overall meaning in the whole spread. I appologize that I can not give you a better meaning from my own personal knowledge, but maybe this quote from Horik Svensson will help...
"The essential message of Wyrd is one of immutable fate or karma. The querent is faced with an inescapable situation and will have to take whatever comes - there is no simple way out. ... The appearence of Wyrd in a runecast does not presage doom but may in fact herald plesant outcomes, depending on the context in which it appears."
I hope that helped...

You sure can! When you feel you've outgrown a deck, or just don't connect with it....give to someone who is interested in learning the tarot....and maybe you can become their mentor. :D ....I would consider who I gave which deck though....like you, not everyone may connect with the deck. :D

Yeah, the blank Rune was "invented" around 1900. It is not part of the Lore or tradition of Runes, which can be historically traced back to from around 100 B.C.E. t0 100 C.E., depending on your source.
I don't use the blank Rune, don't recommend using it. However, I don't eat broccoli & don't recommend eating it. And many other people like broccoli. Just because I think broccoli is wrong for me doesn't make it wrong for anyone else. :)

I'm glad others don't use the blank rune either! They include it in so many books, but i have never liked it! Then i read that it was invented and knew i really didn't want to use it! Each to his own though.
Loved the broccoli analogy! man, i hate broccoli!

So let me get this straight,
am i correct in saying that the blank rune was man made, not like the 24 futhark set which were handed to Odin by divine beings?
if so, then i definately don't see a point in adding it to my set.
