View Full Version : What's Your Irrational Fear?

Okay, I need amusement again ;)

I'm wondering what everyone's totally irrational fears are?

Everyone has at least one - you know, snails or meteors falling on your house or something like that. I'm not talking about serious fears, like war or famine or disease - I'm talking little quirky things that make you who you are.

Mine? Okay, this tells you I'm a little off, but Dr. Seuss cartoons. Some of that animation is just wrong to me. Nothing disturbs me more than those creepy arms that characterize the Oncelers in "The Lorax" - brrrrrr, it gives me goose bumps just to think about it.

Anyone else?

Bees, wasps, yellowjackets and all their vile striped ilk!

I know they're just insects and I know that they serve an important function in nature, but yaaargh! They should serve that function as far away from me as possible!

Also, I was seriously creeped out for weeks after seeing The Ring. Horror movies don't usually do that to me.

Mirrors in the dark.... I never see my own face when I look into one in the dark. (I've seen a man several times....Other times my face is just a black blob...:eyebrow: ) Anyway.....

Tulips.... 8O Do you know how freaky that black thing in the center is?!

my fear would be to not have any fear at all.

we all have our own demons to face, and faceing them and overcoming them help us to grow spiritually...

when we have nothing to challenge or stimulate our intelect, our psyche, or our soul.. we begin to wither and decay!

Spiders. Oh, and I have a fear of falling so skiing is out for me, as well as standing on chairs or a foot ladder....I remember being forced to walk a balance beam in gym in Junior High, as a part of the gymnastics section.....it took me about 5 minutes to walk it, I was so scared of falling off.

Needles, I know they don;t hurt and I know that they are necessary but every time i have to get one I get a fuzzy feeling at the back of my neck and I feel like I'm going to faint.

and Clowns. There is no reason behind it. They just give me the creeps. And on Valentines day my University has clowns going around delivering flowers. I can't even go to school for fear that I will freak out!

I'm afraid of clams and vaccuum cleaners.

Ever since I cut my foot on a clam shell while swimming (and had to get stitches) I've been terrified of even the thought of them.

And vaccuum cleaners have scared me since I was a little kid. Loud, evil machines which my sister would use to try to suck up my toes.

Edit to add: Does Michael Jackson count? Would that be "irrational" even if I'm not a little boy?

I have like 42...but I'll only list a few:

Termites....I hate those little things! ICK ICK ICK! I dont know why, I justcant be near them.

Falling through those sewer covers/grate things on the sidewalk....I can't wak on them, i have vison of falling through and ending up like bill murry in "scrooged" ( even if its summer ). I jump over them or take the long way round!

Bugs that sting.....i stepped in a jelow jackes nest when i was 12 and ever ince i freak out when I hear buzzing.

Well, only the big spiders really bother me. I'm okay with small ones. I can tolerate mid sized ones. I feel real pity for their prey. I don't know if I can think of a more hideous way to die than to have all your insides liquified and sucked out while you're paralyzed and helpless but still alive and conscious.

Tim Burton flicks. Don't ask me why, but I found Beetlejuice to be deeply disturbing. The wierd thing is I have a very odd (others have said twisted, warped, or sadistic) sense of humor, but something about those Burton flicks really bothers me. Those aren't movies, those are psychotic episodes. I paid admission to experience a couple of hours of schizophrenia.

Bees (I've been stung a few times and NONE of those times were of my own fault! I was always minding my own business. :()

Clowns (DON'T get me started. I don't know why they creep me out, but they do...)

Tight spaces (I have horrible claustrophobia. I don't go to frat parties here because I did once and hyperventilated very badly and had to leave.)

Death(Maybe it's not so irrational. After all, no one knows what happens after we shuffle off this mortal coil. But it really does keep me up at night a little too often.)

Heights(This one's not as bad as it used to be. I've really been trying to conquer this one. I've flown in a few airplanes, gone skydiving, been on top of huge mountains in the Alps, etc. But heights still give me the creeps.)

Edit:

Ooh, I just remembered one. This one's pretty strange. I'm terrified of middle-aged men who look a certain way. I can't really describe how the ones I'm terrified of look...they don't usually have a pattern or anything like that. And I'm definitely not afraid of all middle-aged men. It's just that some scare the CRAP out of me. Can't be explained.

I have one irrational fear...all the others are rational. I mean, there's a reason why I'm afraind of bees...they'll sting ya. Spiders can bite, heights can hurt you if you fall off, etc...

My one irrational fear are clowns. Ugh! They are just plain creepy! The only thing worse than clowns are clown dolls!

Well, I'm not exactly claustrophobic but, I don't like sitting in cars.
I mean, I don't get in till I'm ready to roll and as soon as it's parked I jump out. It's kinda weird.

And like Flaire I don't like to look in mirrors in the dark although I've never had the experiences she has.

I'm not big on heights either. Well, tall buildings are OK, as long as I don't have to look over balconies or terraces or anything like that.

Funny you should ask this, as I was going to ask for some help in getting over one of my irrational fears. And I still am...

Ok, first long standing fear- ice skating. Not at a rink, but on a lake or pond and falling in and getting caught under the ice, a la The Omen. I get shivers just thinking about it and will never be able to take my kids skating at the lake that we live 1/4 mile from. Nor will I be able to let someone else take them. I also have fears of falling into water in my car and I seriously believe that I may have died that way. I can't drive over a bridge where I can see the water without getting really shook up. And when that awful mother what was her name drove her babies into the lake, that gave me nightmares for a long time.

This fear is newer and getting worse as time goes on. My hubby has a workshop and lots of saws and power tools. He just bought a compound miter saw so we can redo all of the trim/molding in our house. Every time I hear any saw blade running I cringe and freak out a bit. And each time it gets worse and I start imagining him cutting his fingers off. Like really visually, where I feel like I should grab the phone and dial 911. Now the weird thing is his dad has cut off the tip of one of his fingers and his brother cut off one completely and severed the other. They were reattached thankfully. But still.... this is bad. I can't even think of being in the house when he starts the molding project.

I really need some help on that second one, any ideas?

Phoenix
February 3rd, 2003, 07:24 AM
what if your hubby showed you how the tools worked. (turned off of course) maybe once u knew the mechanics, and perhaps some of the safeguards built in and the safety precautions that he takes personally then you wouldn't feel so apprehensive.

of course this may not be a problem in a fwe years, I was watching an INNOVATION show on television and they showed a company who was developing a mechanism that would stop rotary blades from cutting into anything soft (like flesh) they used a hotdog as a demonstration and it seemed to work great!

I sometimes have an irrational fear of bees. Sometimes I'm fine and sometimes I'll run away from them right away.. or freak out. hehe.

Not much else freaks me out.

I have an alien phobia, but it's selective. Like the Aliens movies, those are fine. But it's the "real" ones, the grays or whatever, that most people have seen - I just can't stand the thought of them. It's freaked me out since I was like 6. I can't deal with the concept. I think it's the whole intelligent experimenting freaky thing.. not sure. I don't mind the idea of things that will eat my intestines as I'm still alive, but.. things that can abduct me and stuff.. no way in hell.

Also space itself I guess. I mean I can look at the sky and pictures and watch movies and listen to people talk about it. But the idea of going up in space completely freaks me out. When people talk about colonizing new planets cos we'll kill this one - I doubt I could ever leave this planet.

And water. Deep water. Not so much pools, though I can't swim so it's a bit hard for me. But pools are okay. Deep water like a lake or ocean. I think it's because one time I hit a sand pocket in this lake in Ontario where you can walk out for miles (at 5-10 years old) and almost drowned. I also really can't stand anything touching me in the water, like fish or seaweed. It freaks the hell out of me. If it's clear of seaweed and shallow I'm not so bad.. even played in the ocean once!.. but..

Even watching movies like Sphere, that take place all way down under the water, I almost had a panic attack in the theatre to that.. oh my gods.. I just so can't deal with that. It's not so bad if it's nature shows - which is odd.. but.. yeah, those are mine.

Chryssi: it's funny you mentioned that. I'm sort of that way. Power saws and chain saws do make me a bit nervous. I'll use them, but with a very heightened sense of caution, similar to what I'd have if I were diffusing a bomb. Wood chippers make me nervous as hell. The idea of not releasing the branch soon enough and getting yanked in there... When I was a kid my grandfather took me on a tour of the mill here where sugar cane is processed. All I could think of was "What if some poor bastard fell into those grinders?"

Now the alien thing I don't understand. I'll gladly take those scrawney little grey weenies over the critters in Aliens. I have no doubt I could kick those skinny little grey a$$es, but I'm not about to tangle with those worker aliens and their queen!

Actually, most of the fears I'm seeing posted here aren't completely irrational. Most of them are based on the fact that something nasty could indeed happen from these things.

Lacykitten
February 3rd, 2003, 10:32 AM
Hehe. I don't know. I could probably take a scrawny gray but.. it's just not what my mind can deal with.

Maybe it stems from not liking doctors and stuff much, and it's just so much worse because who knows what they'd do?.. but.. then again the thought of being attacked by a wild animal isn't so horrible to me, and is in fact my #2 way to die (puma attack! lmao) for some reason.. so I'm sorta weird..

... then again I watch most horror movies like Tremors, Critters, etc and think those creatures are cute.. and the Aliens one is sorta cute in a stranger way.. and.. really, I think on some level I'm sure that a person going "Aww! Cute! *pounce*" would really freak most movie monsters out.. lmao... and nothing would happen anyway.. ;)

I have a very selective fear of insects. Anything that makes noise when it flies (bees, wasps, beetles), or isn't quite...visible as *something* (mosquitoes, things like that) give me the creeps. I've run out of places in an atavistic panic because of the presence of them. And the whole concept of a hive mind scares me bloodless, which doesn't help.

1) bugs, and I mean all of them. The only arachnids I can handle are common variety garden/house spiders. Those I can deal with, but not any others.

2) large bodies of water. No oceans, lakes, harbors or large rivers. If I can't see my feet, I'm not getting in. It makes my skin just crawl and I get the cold sweats.

Yeah, I suppose it's that cold, clinical environment populated by expressionless faces and soulless eyes. I can see that.

I'm more disturbed by a potential predator lurking nearby than being attacked by one. As a kid, bigfoot was my personal bogeyman, but my biggest fear wasn't being attacked by him. It was the idea of him being in the woods, watching me, stalking me, giving me the occasional hint of his presence like a snapped twig or low growl. With my own imagination putting me through that, the idea of him attacking me seemed almost like a relief. The monster wants to attack me? Fine. Let it come out into the open where I've got a fighting chance (theoretically, at least). Give me a target that I can bring my weapons to bear on, but to be tormented by some shadowy, intangible thing... yeah, that bugs me.

Okay, I have a few irrational fears...

1.) Clowns. My brother made me watch "It", "Killer Clowns from Outer Space" and another clown movie, when I was little and now I'm just scared to death of them.

2.) Flying incects. Doesn't matter what they are, be it, moth, butterfly, or June Bug(these ones get to me the most), I am freak out and scream if one comes near me (not so much with butterfly).

3.) Being mugged. When I go out to my car late at night, I have to look under the car, infront of the car, inside the car, then I will get in, lock the doors, and look in the backseat again.

4.) Aliens. If they are so smart, then they will invade earth soon, and that just creeps me out thinking of it. I like to think we are the only living things in the universe.

5.) That my friends really don't like me. Okay, this one is one of my most irrational and frightning fears. I always think that my friends don't like me and that they are just using me (for what, I don't know). THat they all talk bad about me behind my back and I look like an ass when I hang out with them. Because of this fear, my best friends don't know some of my secrets.....

Most of these fears sound normal and at least semi-rational. My big one is totally wierd and I've never heard of anyone else having it:

rubber

yup. rubber snakes, wacky wall walkers, rubber spiders, rubber halloween masks. oh god, i hate to think of them. Of course, as a little girl I tried to make the teachers keep them away from me but no one believed in my fear. Even very loving adults mocked it. I passed out once from being chased by a boy with a rubber snake. Halloween was a horror every year because someone might touch me with a rubber mask. I had hives and anxiety attacks on halloween.
I have worked for years to overcome it. I try to look at them in the toy store, waggling a little if you pass by. The snakes with open mouths, the lolling heads, the bobbing tails. Horrible. I have touched them on purpose, a little poke, just to prove I can.

Of course, I have a little baby boy and I need to get over it before he gets some of these toys. I can pick one up with a napkin or something. I'd probably throw it away if he brough one home.

I even have a hate of Fruit Loops because when I was little a wacky wall walker was the prize and I almost passed out when it fell in my bowl. Now the fruit loops smell makes me sick.

Real snakes and spiders aren't so great, but I'm not totally flipped by them either.

has anyone else heard of a fear like this? I think I'm alone in the world with my crazy fear.

Oh, the grey aliens are a biggie for me to. I prefer the eat-you-alive ones because I KNOW what they'll do. The greys paralyze you and stare with those awful eyes. The eyes!
Now a rubber grey alien - the epitome of horror! (wearing a clown mask!)

Plesiosaurs.

Laugh if you must. I'm terrified of swimming in the ocean because I always imagine glimpsing a plesiosaur coming up from beneath me out of the black depths. They look like the Loch Ness monster with huge teeth.

Ever since I was younger and read about dinosaurs these things have scared the crap out of me. Then a few years ago I read about some semi-compelling evidence that they aren't yet extinct....and thats all I needed for me to be scared to death of oceans ever since.

Being alone anywhere in 'private' (aka without people in my sight) with a man I don't trust. Women, I'm fine. I mean, I'd be uncomfortable, but I can tell a woman to knock it the h*ll off. When a man confronts me or tries to do things, I can't fight back or even call for help, I rarely can even say "no" or "stop it.". . . so you can imagine why I don't like that kind of situation.

Aliens. Every since I was very small, I was obcessed with them. I kind of lost interest as I grew older, but I still will tweak if I'm tired and it's night time and you show me a movie (even a cheesy one) like "Signs". . . 8O

Open spaces, especially large, enclosed rooms or outdoors at night, or a big huge open field. . . usually these things don't bother me, but if I'm nervous or upset, or I need to sleep, open spaces can heighten panic attacks and such. Usually if I'm horribly upset, I will find a small space to cram myself into. It's kind of silly, but I just get so freaked.

Spiders, if they're small. Bigger spiders I can handle, and I love pet tarantulas. But little ones, they scare the CRAP out of me, because they're usually the poisenous ones, like black widows and brown recluses. (I had a nest of black widows under my bed once :blushake: )

HELECOPTERS!!!!!!!! If a helecopter flies over my head. . . or in the area. . . I drop everything I'm doing to watch it. In the best of times, I keep my eye on it and am especially nervous. In the worst of times, I panic and run for cover, dropping whatever I am doing. Or I freeze, unable to look away from it until it's gone. I don't know why this is. I love flying, but airplanes flying overhead make me nervous, sometimes I track them (especially the smaller planes), and helecopters make me terrified.

Oops, I forgot to add- hurting those I love, I mean, truely hurting them. Truely losing them. Holding my loved ones as they die and having no way to help them. Watching them in pain.

On the flipside, I'm not really scared of needles. Actually, I'm kind of fascinated with watching bloodwork and IV's and such. I wouldnt' want it for a career, and I don't exactly like it, but it is very interesting to me, to watch. *shrugs* I know I'm weird

bugs!!! I hate bugs!!!

And lately I've started feeling scared of flying. Which is wierd, because I used to be working towards my pilot's license (until I ran out of $$) and soloing was the single most exhilirating experience of my life. But now I've come across sites like airdisaster.com and I've been having the most horrible dreams, and it just makes me never want to get in a plane again. Not to mention that I dreamed about Columbia before it happened. Yikes.

I have to say I have a fear of drowning (which is irrational for I do not live on or near water - and I am a good swimmer)
and
I cannot stand anything tight around my throat....

I noticed a lot of people have already mentioned mirrors in the dark, so that's no biggie. But what about windows? Normally it's no problem, day or nighttime... only whenever I am trying to go to sleep. Your average run-of-the-mill window doesn't bother me... but if I have to go to sleep in someone's living room and they have one of those huge bay windows... I can't stand it! There's no telling who could walk by and watch you while you are fast asleep... *shudder*

Also... nutcrackers. Those wooden nutcracker dolls. One or two is okay, but I have a friend who has an entire WALL... same thing with porcelain dolls... Call me strange, but that's just creepy...

Greetings,

Couple of thoughts:

Originally posted by materra:
" its ammunition you guys, ammunition"

I thought knowing your own fears to be a good thing. You know them, so you may do something about them. Or not, in which case materra has a point. Overcoming your fears or, perhaps easier, protect yourself from others using them against you, starts with acknowledging having fears in the first place.

If I'd fear something so much that I wasn't able to protect myself against it, I'd absolutely not tell anyone. Especially an internet forum.

So... I have irrational fears as well.

Someone commented on being afraid of pleiosaurs -- I don't want to swim in the sea and big ponds either, not because of dinosaurs but because of general fear of that beautiful, vast mass of water below me, where all kinds of creatures live, some of which just happen to think I'm a nice mid-day snack. So I went swimming with whales in an aquarium marina, have those enormous bodies slide past me, knowing they notice and choose to ignore me. I'm still afraid, but now I know what to expect from fear.

Someone else commented on being afraid of elevators. Although I believe no elevator younger than 60 years will ever fall down (I did do some technical research into break systems), I'd as lief take the stairs. I have nightmares about falling elevators and disappearing beyond rescue, getting lost and all, but am able to control myself and use one if needed.

Then, there's the big black spot in the swimming pool. You know, those big sports pools have black lines on the bottom to help you navigate with your head down, and then on the end of that line, there's that big black spot... I recollect being very young and sitting down on that spot, very happy with myself for finally reaching it on one lung of breath. The swimming instructor (pardon my language, we call them "bath masters" but that sounds really silly in English) had to get me out himself and lecture me on drowning. Since then, I feel uncomfortable with big black spots.

And the biggest fear of all... I tend to control all other fears by analytical overload. If you think about something long enough, and find theories and explanations for it, it looses reality. It becomes an abstract. My mind is my shield from fear itself, so in a way I fear being afraid... So... what if I loose my mind? What if I can't think straight? I absolutely fear loosing the ability to think. I wouldn't be able to control myself nor my fears, and everything would hit me at the same time. Which is why I stay at home when I fall ill and make sure my body and mind are in the best condition I can achieve.

But please, materra, using my own fears against me? You think after a couple of years one doesn't get used to their own fears? My fears are part of my being, part of my persona. I know them, I cherish them like any other personal trait.

Didn't you get used to your nightmares? How do you deal with fear?

Also, I was seriously creeped out for weeks after seeing The Ring. Horror movies don't usually do that to me.

 Omygod!!!!!
That movie gave me the worst nightmares!!! Every time I closed my eyes I saw that little girl climbing out of the well and walking towards me. It was the creepiest movie ever!!!

I used to be badly scared by horror movies when I was a kid but I grew out of it.
I also used to be scared of water, rollorcoasters, cats, lifts, you name it, I was scared of it. I had a very nervous childhood.

I am not sure this is a fear, or I am just unusual, but I can't stand things being closed.

I have all my curtains open, if I have them at all, I can not stand to have them closed, I have to be able to see out even in the darkness. when I sit in the house to watch TV or mess on the puter, I need to be able to see out, I never shut myself in. I don't close the bedroom door nor the bath, unless there is company, even then I don't like to....I don't lock my house..

I am not claustrphobic, as I like caving and elevators don't bother me at all...Just strange I guess

Aijou_no_Tenshi
February 9th, 2003, 05:32 PM
I think I have agoraphobia (the exact opposite of clausterphobia). I can't stand being out in the open. I have to have my blinds shut ALL THE TIME! ... Even in mid daylight, I can't have them open! ... The doors have to be locked constantly. ... And I can't stand being in any big places, like a field or a big room (like the lunch room in school).

hehe, I know this thread is from ages ago but I am kinda proud of myself. Hubby and I were putting all new molding up in the living room yesterday which involved lots of use of a compound miter saw. Power tools/saws were part of my irrational fear. I remembered Phoenix's advice (thanks!!) and asked hubby before we started to show me how the darn thing worked. By watching him do this, all of a sudden, it didn't seem so scary. I'm not thrilled about it, and I would use it myself, but at least I didn't need to pop valium all day!

My most lame fear is of escalators. When I was about two, my mom and I were at the mall, she was juggling bags and bumped into me. I lost my balance and got one of my fingers caught between the steps... I didn't really come out of it any worse for the wear; I've just got a funky scar, but man, I hate those things. I absolutely refuse to carry anything on them so I can hold onto both railings, heh.

Two sounds that make my skin crawl are toothbrushing and velcro sticking and unsticking. Can't stand them! If anybody ever wants to see me curl up into a little ball, break out in goosebumps all over my body and whimper, that's the way to do it. I remember seeing Pulp Fiction in the theatre, when the gal was brushing her teeth and talking about pancakes... Oh, I was miserable! :bug:

Driving through water (like a flooded street).
Heights.
Insects. (Even flies. **remembers Amityville Horror** Not afraid of Butterflies, Mayflies, or Dragonflies. Or pillbugs, or ladybugs.)
Bridges. (That combines fear of height with fear of driving through water.)
Centipedes and millipedes and cockroaches. (Yes, I know they're all insects, but they get their own category because they're... **shudders**)
Clowns.
Guys with beards or moustaches (or both).
Thunderstorms. (Ever since I saw some psychic on TV say that she only became psychic after she'd been struck by lightning in her own bed, I've been afraid of them.)
Mirrors at night. (There was this one Ghostbusters cartoon where these aliens were snatching people through the mirrors and storing them in cryogenic pods for when they got the munchies later on.)
Aliens. (Of the little-grey-people-with-big-black-eyes variety)
The Garbage Disposal. (I'm always afraid that the thing is going to somehow magically turn itself on while my hand is down there fishing a spoon out of it.)
Ghosts. (I proclaim that I don't believe in them, but only because I don't *want* to believe in them.)

Raydreamer reminded me... My husband *hates* wooden spoons. He won't touch them -- can't stand how they feel, he says. If I'm cooking with one and ask him to stir for a minute, he'll have to put an oven mitt on. If he has to wash one, he'll put those horrid plastic kitchen gloves on.

When I'm in a sadistic mood, it's kind of fun to lightly run one across the back of his neck -- he squeals like a little girl. (Of course, then he runs and gets his toothbrush...)

Going down in a plane crash. My mom-in-law scolds me about this one. She says flying is the safest way to travel and that I'm more likely to be in a car wreck. My response to her was yes, but if I'm in a car and see someone coming head on at me I can swerv and hit a tree or something. Plus I always wear my seatbelt. Take it from me guys, I've worked emergency rooms, sealt belts really do save lives. Now, if I'm 33,000 feet in the air and the plane goes into a nose dive...I can't swerv..and being buckled in while heading straight into the ground at 550 mph won't make a difference. Do I fly ? Yep...with lots of valium!!!!! Just my irrational fear.

I'll second those ventriloquist dummies and raise you an "anything in a costume."

I'm not talking kids on Halloween or anything. I'm talking about those people in like Mickey Mouse costumes who are huge and want to hug me. I freak out really badly. Radocs can also vouch for the fact that I'm terrified of those huge talking bears at the mall at christmas time. You know which ones I'm talking about? They talk to little kids and stuff...I don't know. I geek out a little bit when I go to Hershey Park and those giant candy bars are walking around, too. :shaker: Those things are really creepy.

Motor boats! Motor boats! Motor boats! I hate them, I hate being on them! It, honest to goodness, took days of coaxing just to get me on a boat for 40 minutes, 10 of which was spent in the tube, which I have no issue with, outside of when I fell out and was in pain for the next few days. And when I was actually in the boat... I pretty much sat with my hands gripping the handles beside where I was sitting and eyes clenched shut as I tried very hard not to scream and just jump out of the boat and swim to shore, which I would have happily done if I got freaked out enough.
I don't have a problem with anything else, except some things, like elevators and escalators, throw my equilibrium off and if I don't stop moving entirely shortly after I get off I'll lose my balance.

Dr. Seuss is fine. Mickey mouse or Donald Duck however... I think it goes back to when I was a kid, I got really sick with the flu and had a fever. Was watching Disney channel and there was an episode with Donald Duck having a nightmare about being in a chess game, falling, etc, and then I dreamed I was in the chess game too and Donald Duck was going to get me...

Oddly enough, though, even though most of he traditional Disney characters (Mickey, Donald, Goofy, especially) bother me, I never had a problem watching Duck Tales when I was little...

Also, I'm claustrophobic in my dreams, have terrible nightmares about closed in spaces (usually old, dusty ones in out of the way places), yet in waking life those are the kinds of areas I'm usually most comfortable with (except occasionally when I get a very bad feeling about one place or another...)

I don't like being near the woods alone at night. I don't much care for needles either, my hands are shaky everytime I give myself one which doesn't help at all.

i am TERRIFIED of slugs, if i see one outside, i literally will not pass where it is. i'm afraid it'll touch me somehow...

i'm afraid of freak natural disasters, like the tsunami. i used to get made fun of over that fear alot, but i bet they don't think it's so funny now.

i have a horrible fear of water. if it's bigger than my bathtub, i seem to think it can reach out and kill me at any second. i'm even scared to let my kids in water, which i'm sure isn't good for them.

i am so scared of small spaces i will pass out if i feel trapped. before any flight or situation where i'll feel 'compressed', i have to take sedatives to avoid terrifying everyone else.

probably the worst one is, my children or husband getting killed in a freak accident. i swear, everytime any of them take a step i think of 100 ways they could die right now and just want to grab them up.

so yeah... i'm mildly nuerotic and stuff...

Ok do you think I'm cruel? Every time I've seen a slug I've gone to get the salt out to watch it melt... I swear slugs are made of water!

I used to be afraid of dogs, but I got over that fear. If I see a ferocious animal my heart will race but then my logic takes over and I try to act with extreme caution. I lost my fear of heights already I can probably jump out of a plane without any hesitation. I'm not afraid of enclosed spaces. I can walk around in the dark without as much as a shiver, even when I sense spirits nearby. I used to be afraid of bees, now I just dare them to try and land on me. I probably would be afraid of a snake or insect biting me but I'm facinated with wild creatures and insects usually and try to get closer to look at them. A crocodile or a shark would probably keep me at a distance, but I would not be scared. I've driven around in a hurricane before and been caught in the front of a typhoon and lifted up a few feet off the ground. I have been hit by a truck and a motorcycle before. I seriously can't think of anything scarier than asking a girl out for a date LOL.

Spiders. Even hearing people talk about those little freaks make me shudder.

I don't like elevators--something about not wanting to be trapped in a tiny box with no escape. I'm not claustrophobic, as small spaces don't scare me, I just don't like elevators.

Syringes. When I was five, I had to get some vaccination. Well, the nurse wasn't holding me tight enough and when I jerked my arm, the needle popped out of the syringe. I had to get the rest in the other arm and I haven't liked them since.

I'm better with the last two phobias. I'll ride an elevator if I'm in a tall building and I received my last meningitis vaccine (this past summer) while standing up. I usually have to sit. Fortunately, the meningitis vaccine is administered to the back of the arm, so I don't actually have to see it.

We get these black bugs sometimes. They are a little bigger then a quarter and crunch when you step on them. They just creep me out. Now living at the Jersey Shore I know that there are not many bugs that can kill me or even hurt me but, they just get to me for some reason.

Driving over a bridge. It's weird, I'm not really afraid of heights, just something about being over water scares me. And another weird thing, I'm not afraid unless I'm the one driving. In a passenger seat it doesn't really bother me. Crazy

for a long time I had a huge phobia of vomiting.

I used to get myself into such a state whenever I got sick. I managed to get over it though when I made myself quite ill a little while ago and realized although it's gross its not the end of the world, lol. :fpartyfav

hhmmmmm fears... irrational... well... that's all debatable on what you consider irrational... hehe but... I think I have several fears...

I'm afraid of heights... have been since I was a little kid. It was all I could do, to do the penny drop (hanging upside down from the bars and flipping) in school... walking on the balance beam... Somehow, I'm okay in an airplane... I can look down... I was even on the edges of the mountains in Sedona, Arizona... I was scared sh**less... but... I was able to be there... I think it's the fear of falling and getting hurt, and no one being able to help me... as you can see, I've learned to face my fear... I'm still afraid, but it doesn't totally control me...

I don't so much fear bugs, ants, and spiders... as I just plain don't like them... they give me the heebie jeebies and I just want someone to kill it and get it away from me... don't even leave the dead carcass there... it's gotta be totally gone! lol Ants are just annoying and they creep me out... I have a solution for them, however... kinda like fly-paper... post it notes... hehe If an ant dares crawl across my desk, they get stuck to the sticky part of a post it note... buh-bye ant... next... lol

Now... bees, wasps, hornets... yes, I am afraid of those... I will run from those... wherever... I will make myself look like a fool... it doesn't matter... I am so afraid of them, because I've been stung by either a bee or hornet twice by stepping on them and I'm allergic (not quite the loosing breath type - but severe skin reaction) to them... Plus, I've heard stories of them actually killing people through their stings (like in wasps because they sting again and again and again) or coming close to killing... So, that's definitely a fear and one I've not faced... lol

hmmm the fear of not having any friends... I was pretty much used and abused as a kid by my friends... they all abandoned me... so, it's very hard for me to make friends, because I'm afraid that the same thing is going to happen... I guess that could be a trust issue instead of a fear...

However, I think I do have a fear of being alone... with no one to love me, or care for me... being alone is not fun... I am a loner type because I don't have any friends to hang out with... but... I like having that 1 person that I can count on that loves me and cares about me... just hope I don't ever loose that... or if I do... have someone else find me and rescue me! lol (Gee, is there 911 for single, cute, awesome hotties??? lol)

I used to be afraid of snakes... and I suppose out in the wild, I would still be afraid of them... but, about 10 years ago, one of my boyfriends, who could get me to do pretty much anything, had a snake, and he actually put it around my shoulders and let me hold it to show me that they were okay... so, now I don't mind them as much... As long as they are in a cage, I'm usually fine... lol However, the other day I was in a pet store and saw a tarantula in a cage and about freaked... I think I did let out a lil yelp... lol So, possibly, I am afraid of spiders more than I think... lol

Dieing by fire... After seeing the movie Backdraft, I shook and cried the whole way home to my boyfriend's house (this was probably 12 years or so ago, when it first came out), and then had to sit in his drive way for another half hour before I could calm myself down enough to drive home... then, that night, I was having a nightmare about the movie, and just as the guy in my dream opens the door and you hear that whoosh... my father had a sleep apnea attack and made that same sound at the exact same time... bolted me upright in bed in a panic... I can be around candles, campfires, and such... but a structure fire... that would freak me out...

Bad storms that could produce tornadoes... I've always had a great fear of tornadoes... they can do so much damage... you could loose everything... even your life... and that scares me... I remember when I was younger, if there was a threat of a tornado, I would gather my "tornado readiness bag"... all my most prized possesions that I couldn't bear to live without... and essentials, radio, blankets, etc... and I would just be pacing around the house watching the weather, looking outside, barricading myself in the basement... basically almost panicking... lol I've started to have dreams about them though, that make them feel real... and I guess starting to confront them so that I'm not as afraid of them as I used to be...

hehe told you I probably had a lot of fears... kudos to those that have read this far! lol =) But... sometimes, if you talk about them, and get it out... and confront your fears... they aren't as bad anymore... You and you alone give power to your fears... If you take some of the power back, they aren't so bad... you can overcome them...

I don't know if anyone has seen this bug. I think its japanese beetle?? Anyway its this huge bug thats shell is green and has red mark on it. Kind of eminds me of scarab. You can hear these things flying, they make this really loud, creepy humming noise. And they make a gross taping noise when they are hitting your patio doors, or windows.. :blushake: For some reason (heres's the irrational part) everytime I'm outside, I get dived bombed by these bugs. I usually go running towards the nearest door in such a state. :yikes: And then everyone laughs and says "It's just a bug!"
Geez how embarrassing..

spiders (thouhg I don't think it's irrational at all) and clowns, something about someone who will paint their face or dress up as something they're not on a day other than halloween (on that note polititians as well hehe).

Spiders.
They can be any color, anyplace, anytime. I ran into a cat-spider web as a kid and the thing was sitting in the middle of the web when I did it. The web wrapped around me and the huge spider crawled across my face and into the bushes.
The funny part is that this is one of my totem creatures...*shivers*

1.I am the biggest arachnophobe, not scared of spiders smaller than a coin, not scared of them biting me particularly, just scared of them touching/crawling on me with their big hairy disgusting bodies.Ewwwwwww, I hyperventilate, gag, scream and run. Also cochroaches.
2.Heights, I suffer from vertigo badly. Cant deal with elevators on the outside of a building, cant deal with stairs going up high with gaps between each step, cant look down.
3.All perverted men, ones that touch you in places that you shouldn't be touched. Freaks, why do they do that?
4. Being alone with my own thoughts, my imagination is too good and I start to think I can hear someone breaking in from composites of harmless noises. Maybe being alone with my paranoia is the best way to put it ;)
5. Dogs, any size, freak me out big time. I will cross a road and go a couple of blocks out of my way to avoid a dog that is by itself. I once had a dog leap out of the bushes at me for my throat and his owner quickly jumped on him to stop it. If the owner hadn't been there I doubt I would be alive, mind you if the rottie was on a leash it wouldn't have happened
6. Sharks - white pointers to be specific, but I guess in the water it wouldn't matter, they're all freaky, at least I'm only scared of them in the water.
