this reminds me of some of the 'Dazzle' camoflage schemes of WW1.
these were based on the idea of making the eye unable to perceive the proper shape or even course of ships rather than actually trying to hide them. the thinking was that the brain would be incapable of interpreting the visual data correctly. it met with moderate success.
