There's a book (naturally I can't remember the author or title) that discussed the theory that remains of extinct animals gave rise to mythical creatures. I think this was one example. Another was the skeleton of a dinosaur called (I think) protoceratops, a beaked quadraped that may have given rise to the idea of griffins. All in all, a rather interesting idea.

Interesting theory, isn't it? The skull looks quite human-like!
