I like the Commedia and classical clowns like Pierrot that modern clowns are based on, but the modern Ringling Brothers sorts creep me out!

As far as I'm concerned, all clowns are either;

Demons from some bizarre dimension

Escaped psychopathic mental patients

Future escaped psychopathic mental patients

Whenever I go to an amusement park or carnival, if I see one I will find myself walking away and not even realize it until I walk into something. I think I would kill one if cornered. The very sight of them disturbs me, like Michael Jackson.

Maybe the clowns are a mere relic from a time when they did serve a function, much the same way the circus magician wasn't supposed to perform for children...

Some of the best clowns I've seen perform for adults exclusively. And I seriously wouldn't want to see any of them performing for children, the same way a Kindergarten teacher normally can't be replaced by a college professor.

I like some clowns.

A class of children started a class project to make a planter to take home as a Mother's Day gift. They wanted to put a plant in it that was easy to take care of, so the teacher decided to use cactus.

The children were given green ware pottery planters shaped like a clown which they painted with glaze and had professionally fired at a class outing so they could see the process. It was great fun.

They planted the cactus seeds in the finished planters and they grew nicely, but unfortunately the children were not allowed to take them home.

The cactus plants were removed and replaced by a small ivy plant, at which point the children were allowed to take them home. The teacher said cactus seemed like a good idea at the time...

Here, here! **applause for Rani** I totally agree with that. When I was younger, I would hide all of my dolls in the closet before I could sleep at night. Heck, just this past Christmas, I was back in Massachusetts with my family. My mother had put this pretty porcelain angel in my room because she didn't know where else to put it. The very first night I was there, I had to put that thing in the closet because it gave me the wiggins. Didn't remove it from the closet until I was all packed up and ready to go back to Colorado.

The scary thing is..... as much as I hate clowns, especially those evil porcelain ones, I still love the Goblin King in Labyrinth, and his character was based on a harlequin on the protagonist's bureau. Go fig.
