Wow. How sad that adults in our country's government would so bully a man that he would change a large factor of who he was. At least it's ultimately a good thing for Jeffords, getting out of the same party as Bush. (NO offense meant to any Republican; I just don't happen to like Bush at all)

Hopefully this will undermine Senor Squinty's authority enough to cause some change for the good, or to stop destructive decisions from coming to pass.

And we wonder where the kids get it...

The best part about this situation is that shrub will have to WORK to get his BS through 'the process' now. He just can't railroad it through anymore. I said it once, and I'll say it again...

WOOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!!!!

i'm sorry but much as i like you all i have to disagree here, jeffords got where he is by the work of republican party workers/volunteers, republican party money, and republican voters. my vote included and i regret that mistake. jeffords ran for the senate back in november on that republican money knowing he was going to turn his coat. i'm sorry but i have lost all respect for the man, he is no more than a scalawag and a cheap opportunist and knowing how the political game is played in washington we back here in vermont will suffer the payback while jeffords makes a soft landing for himself inside "the beltway" when he retires. we'll never see him back in vermont nor will we miss him.

Gunner, I understand what you are saying, and I would be upset if I voted for the guy as a republican.

With that said, I also am thrilled it happened. When George Bush was appointed president I cringed at the thoughts of what damage that man could do. It has only been a short time, but he has not disappointed me. He's already damaged abortion rights, developed his "Faith Based Initiative" which takes puplic assistance benefits out of the hands of gov't and puts it in the hands of churches, Bush recognized churches. So, that if you are in need, if you aren't Christian or Jewish, well, you don't get any aid. He's made a horrific decision to drill for oil in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. He ignored the conflicts in the Middle East, thus allowing them to escalate and Israel to start acting more like Iraq with new agressions against the Palestinians. Now he is being forced to step in. However, neither side knows him nor has any confidence in him, so we are back to square one. Jeez, I could go on. So, regardless of his reasons, I have to say that Jim Jeffords is a hero to me. Look for more to follow. I doubt that this is going to be the last defector. Bush only has his own incompetence to blame. Maybe daddy should have bought the presidency for Jebb.

we'll agree to disagree tiger and i'll drop the subject. i'm more than angry about this and i don't want to get into a rant. though being angry with jeffords does not spill over onto my friends.

Gunner, you voted for the guy, so you should be outraged. I have to admit that what he did was a slap in the face to his supporters. Regardless what was going on on capitol hill, he owed his loyalty not to Bush, but to you. I suppose he must have had some pretty good reasons, however. This might damage his career irrevocably.

I can sympathise with you. We on the west coast (especially California) have been dealing with the backlash of a vindictive president already. And what you say about Jeffords as a person is quite possibly correct. But we should keep in mind the bigger picture here.

Our current president has been running roughshod over the American people ever since he got into office. He has pushed the boundaries from the day he was sworn in. If he continued to get his way... well, I really don't want to think about that. :(

This shift in power (due to his 'defection') will be enough to make shrub actually have to WORK at getting all of his Bu||$#!+ passed. We are a long way from being in a safe place but this is definitely a step in the right direction.

I'm sorry Gunner for your disapointment.

I'm also sorry to tell you I'm glad its happened, I would be happier if it happened in an area not covered in this board, wherever that may be! I'm also glad you are here to tell us your side. If you, or I, weren't I would never would have known he upset anyone. I happened to accidently catch the live news conference and everyone was as happy as could be and cheering him on. I know all of his supporters couldn't be there but they did put on a very convincing show.

sorry you are disapointed.

Everyone else

I did the "takin' back the senate" dance for the entire day!

My friend said it was a gift from God on my brithday *LOL*

I don't care about the "republican money" he used to get elected. They shouldn't have tried to bully him, and they did. You can't bully a senator from a state that didn't vote for you. It is just one if a long line of fubs Bush et al is making.

For the first time since the (s)election, I feel hopeful! I want NOTHING to do with the Republican party. Their rightward drift (and the dems rightward drift) is terrifying! I can feel my civil liberties being stripped away!

But then, I am a socialists....I am probably more LEFT than most socialists! ;)
