Hi Skysteed,
I've never heard of 4 Thieves vinegar but there's lots of stuff in this world I don't know. :D
This would be my guess only...hope it helps. The vinegar & camphor tells me that it's meant to be a rub or liniment of some kind. Also, wormwood & camphor & rue tells me that you'll probably not want to ingest this concoction.
Rosemary in a liniment is for rheumatism, sores, bruising or wounds.
Wormwood is very similar...used externally it makes a good rub for bruises & sprains, sometimes used as a local anesthetic for rheumatism & arthritis.
Lavender is very calming & sedative. Lavender & sage can be used externally to relieve spasms & cramps as well as both being astringent.
Rue in an ointment or liniment is used externally for rheumatism & gout.
Peppermint has many uses but the one that fits in here is that for external use, it's great for itchy skin conditions.
So, my guess would be that, medicinally, it would be used as a liniment for arthritis, rheumatism, sprains & bruising. Magically, these herbs are used for healing or protection or both. So my guess that it would be a oinment used in a protection spell against sickness & bad health.
Ok, that's all just my guess... :D Hope it helps a bit.

Heh...that's what I was thinking.
btw, does anyone know of a website that could tell me WHY certina herbs/oils are used for healing certain ales? Like, what chemicals or such are in each that make the body respond to them? I'm extremely interested in aromatherapy and would like to know why I'm using what I am, instead of just following it out of a book. :)

I was wondering if anyone can tell me why there are about four million *different* recipes out there for Four Thieves Vinegar (which is for protection, curse-breaking and banishment mostly) available. Also, if any of you use this, how and what do you put in it?

Probably because no one's really sure what was originally in it.
As far as I know, the story goes that four thieves in France came up with it as a disinfectant during the plague so that they could rob the dead without fear of getting sick. They were eventually caught and they plea bargained with their vinegar recipe for a merciful death.
The recipe I have is 1 teaspoon each ground cinammon, clove, and nutmeg, 2 teaspoons each rosemary, peppermint and sage (all dried), 2 teaspoons crushed garlic, and 4 cups cider vinegar.
You throw everything in a bottle and put it in the sun for 15 days. I wasn't aware of its magical effects but I know it makes a great disinfectant.

I'm studying a book right now, "The New Healing Herbs" by Michael Castleman that is really good at explaining that.
