Started the new thread from the Name That Goddess thread... two questions have been asked. First was "Egyptian Protectress of cats" and the answer was Bast. Cydira got it right, and her question is,

Celtic Goddess of the Sun

So come and play! :D :D :D <-----poor abused smily

Amethyst Rose

This is the one patheon that I really don't know enough about.... however, if I was to hazard a guess I would say Brigid, seeing as how she's "the bright one".

Armitage
May 29th, 2001, 03:11 AM
I'm going to say Aine, though the book I have says she's Irish.

loopy
May 29th, 2001, 04:15 PM
According to the page I found, neither of those answers is correct. Hopefully cydira will swing by and let us know if either were who she was talking about. :)

Yvonne Belisle

Dagda?

loopy
May 29th, 2001, 04:56 PM
Not Dagda, either, from what I can tell. I sent a PM to cydira--hopefully when she gets on she's stop by here. :) In the meantime, keep guessing! :) Educatedly guessing. :)

Amethyst Rose

All right.... this is driving me nuts, so I did some research....

This is what I found:

Adsullata: A Goddess of hot springs who came to Brittany from Celtic Gaul. She is the origin of the Anglo-Celtic sun Goddess Sul.

Aimend: A minor Celtic sun Goddess who was said to be the daughter of the king of the region known as Corco Loidhe.

Greine: Sun goddess; goddess of herbalism. Greine, House of the Sun, is a master herbalist. She is also a crone goddess who awakens the fertility of the earth every Spring. Her priestesses dwelt in 'griannon', sun houses. Also called Daughter of the Sun, Tear of the Sun, and Greine of the Bright Cheeks, she devolved into the fairy queen of Leinster, Ireland. Cnoc Greine, in Leinster, is her sacred hill. Some say that Greine alternates with Aine, ruling the waxing year while Aine rules the waning year.

Mor: Dark Goddess of death and rebirth; sea goddess; Sun goddess. Mor, Queen of the Island of Woman, is associated with Corco Duibne, Ireland. Her symbol is a throne. Invoke Mor while the sun is setting, for sea spells, rebirth, and solar magic.

Sulis - Also known as Sul or Sol (Norse). Ancient Celtic Sun Goddess, worshipped especially on hilltops overlooking springs. The Springs at Bath were originally known as Aquae Sulis (Waters of the Sun).

I could probably go on and on with this..... there are too many sun goddess to list :)
I think we should all get a cookie for at least coming up with one of them, if not necessarily the one she was thinking of. :D

loopy
May 29th, 2001, 05:59 PM
Amethyst Rose--I know, there are so many to choose from. And you SOO get cookies and lemonade for every guess. :D The one I was thinking of was

Etain
In Celtic mythology, Etain (Shining-One) was the triple goddess of the sun, water, horses, fragrance, beauty, music and the
transmigration of souls.

I just realized I'm allowed to guess too cause I don't know the answer. :D

Now gimme my cookie! ;) :D

loopy

Here's a new one until we hear from cydira. :D

This Greek Goddess was called "the sender-forth-of-gifts" and "All-giver" and was thought to be a manifestation of the earth Goddess Rhea.

Amethyst Rose
May 31st, 2001, 01:35 AM
This is really a great idea! :D It gives me a chance to stretch my brain muscles.
Although I feel like I'm the only one playing, for some reason.... come on people! Show us how smart you are! :D

Amethyst Rose
May 31st, 2001, 01:42 AM
I'm stuck on this one.... not of my research is panning out. I'll try again tomorrow when my brain is more awake.

Tigerwallah
May 31st, 2001, 11:43 PM
Demeter was one of the two Earth Goddesses associated with Rhea. Dememeter was the one, however, who is most associated with the bounty of the harvest and the bringing forth the gifts of the Earth.

Gaea is the other I'm thinking of.

Amethyst Rose
June 1st, 2001, 02:30 AM
Yeah....that could be it :)

I came up with them too, but in all the research I did, no one mentioned anything about giving, etc. But it really does make perfect sense....

Have a cookie Tigerwallah :)

loopy
June 1st, 2001, 04:11 AM
Demeter's not my Goddess. :) Hey, how should we do this? Keep going until someone gets it right, or just give the answer after a few guesses?

Emy
June 1st, 2001, 04:33 AM
Perhaps you could give us one more clue?

:)

Blessings

loopy
June 1st, 2001, 05:07 AM
Sure. :)

Originally this Goddess held a honey vase from which she poured blessings.

Tigerwallah
June 1st, 2001, 07:46 AM
Thanks for the cookie, Amethyst Rose.

The only Greek Goddess, I know of, to have held a honey pot and bestow gifts is Aphrodite. I had a statue of her with the pot, and she bestowed the gift of fruit at a wedding, Helen of Troy's I think. Then there were her numerous blessings of marraige. Best guess.

loopy
June 1st, 2001, 08:01 AM
Here's another clue: As society changed, this Goddess was represented as a darker figure who spilled ills instead of honey.

Tigerwallah
June 1st, 2001, 09:16 AM
Cybele? If this is incorrect, is this goddess an Olympian, Titan, Ancient (pre-Titan) or Lesser goddess?

loopy
June 1st, 2001, 09:24 AM
Not Cybele. Pandora. :) This is what my book says: "Originally Pandora was a Goddess who held a honey vase, not a box, from which she poured blessings, not ills. Goddesses of old were known to hold vessels which were womb-like, from which life-enhancing forms would flow. In ancient texts Pandora was called "the sender-forth-of-gifts", the "All-giver" and was thought to be a manifestation of the earth goddess Rhea. As Greek society changed, Pandora was depicted as an Eve figure who brought all evils into the world."

Someone else post the next. :D

Tigerwallah
June 1st, 2001, 09:35 AM
Wow, I passed over Pandora because the description I had did not say what was in the jar. Cool! :)

Emy
June 1st, 2001, 09:41 AM
Aaaaah Pandora, didn't think of her at all to be honest! :)

Tigerwallah
June 1st, 2001, 09:57 AM
Ok, I have one. Who is the Greek goddess of dirty jokes and ribald humor?

yemayasdaughter
June 1st, 2001, 11:23 AM
FONT] I am not sure if I am correct, but my guess would be Baubo... the nursemaid of Demeter, who would make her laugh, by lifting up her skirt and showing her nakedness...

CORRECT!!!!

Tigerwallah
June 2nd, 2001, 05:42 AM
When Persephone was taken by Hades, Baubo tried to cheer up Demeter by telling her ribald jokes. This did not work. Finally, she lifted her skirt and exposed herself to Demeter. This caused Demeter to burst out laughing, thus lightening her mood.

Emy

oki I got an easy one...

Greek goddess considered to be very very wise...

Amethyst Rose
June 2nd, 2001, 02:55 PM
Metis?

Tigerwallah
June 2nd, 2001, 03:57 PM
Athena is the goddess of wisdom

Amethyst Rose
June 2nd, 2001, 04:01 PM
Yes, but.... Metis is Athena's mother, and her name *means* wisdom. Zeus swallowed Metis so he could have her wisdom, and Athena was later born out of his head -- wearing a full suit of armor and carrying weapons, no less.

loopy
June 2nd, 2001, 04:26 PM
Sounds like it could be either one, since when Metis died, Athena became the wisest of the Goddesses, as had been foreseen to Zeus.

Amethyst Rose
June 2nd, 2001, 04:29 PM
Exactly what I was thining.... It's a tie! :)

I never heard of Metis.

loopy
June 2nd, 2001, 10:02 PM
from www.pantheon.org :

Pronunciation
{mee'-tis}

Etymology
"Wisdom"

The Greek personification of wisdom and its goddess. She is a daughter of Oceanus and Tethys. Metis is regarded as the first wife of Zeus, whom he swallowed when he discovered that she was pregnant, fearing she might give birth to a son mightier than he. Subsequently, the goddess Athena sprang fully armed from his head. It was also Metis who delivered the remedy that made Cronus disgorge the children he had swallowed.

Tigerwallah

Ok, I have one: Who is the Semitic goddess associated with Ishtar, who first appears as a queen in one of the two versions of the story of Isis and Osirs?

Merrie
June 3rd, 2001, 05:14 PM
is it Agasaya? Maybe?

loopy
June 3rd, 2001, 05:21 PM
Agasaya is my vote as well. Although I haven't been able to find anything about a queen (aside from Isis) in any Isis and Osiris myths yet. :)

Tigerwallah
June 3rd, 2001, 06:41 PM
Hint: She is mentioned in the Old Testament and her name was forbidden by the Jews.

Revelation
June 3rd, 2001, 07:01 PM
My vote is for Ashtoreth.

Tigerwallah
June 3rd, 2001, 07:16 PM
No, but you're very warm.

loopy
June 3rd, 2001, 07:26 PM
Asherah?

Tigerwallah
June 3rd, 2001, 07:34 PM
It is Astarte. Astoreth is thought to be a combination of Astarte and Asherah. So, you were both red hot. In one version to the Isis and Osiris myth, the tree that Seth hides osiris in becomes a column for the palace of Queen Astarte. Isis goes to ask the queen for the column, and becomes the nurse maid of Astarte's baby.

loopy
June 3rd, 2001, 07:50 PM
Ooh, I SAW an article that listed Astarte as a combination and was gonna guess that, too. :D I very much love this. I'm learning a bunch. :D

Anyone wanna throw another question out there? :)

Merrie
June 3rd, 2001, 08:07 PM
okay, Ive got one! She was considered the triple goddess of witchcraft and sorcery. She is at crossroads and is associated with the howling of dogs. She personifies the darkness and terror of night. If you look at her Roman name instead of just her greek, she may be a sort of patron to this thread (hint hint...) Shouldnt be too hard...

Revelation
June 3rd, 2001, 08:12 PM
Hecate.

I never distinguished between Ashtoreth/Astarte/Ashera. My bible actually says Ashtoreth. Heh.

Merrie
June 3rd, 2001, 08:22 PM
Aack. Hecate (aka Trivia to the Romans.) It was way too easy, huh?

loopy
June 3rd, 2001, 09:00 PM

Here's one: The Japanese Goddess of the Plains. :)

Amethyst Rose
June 3rd, 2001, 09:10 PM
This is just a brief interuption to say that I have a good goddess for the next one. :)
I'll get back to you on the answer for the above one, when I have more time for research....

Merrie

She is a Japanese goddess who is "guardian of the 'Peaches of Immortality'."

Armitage
June 4th, 2001, 02:30 AM
I'm going to take a wild and probably wrong guess and say Amaterasu-no-kami, and then ask where people found the Japanese deity infos. :D

Amethyst Rose
June 4th, 2001, 03:10 AM
I'm sorry!! I made a big mistake!

My goddess is Chinese! I must have had a brain burp, from the last goddess being Japanese.

Maybe that'll make it easier on everyone... :)
