WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush signed a law on Monday to build a World War II memorial seen as a long overdue tribute by its supporters and as a scar on one of Washington, D.C.'s great open spaces by its detractors.

Marking Memorial Day, Bush put his stamp of approval on legislation to erect a memorial of granite pillars, bronze wreaths and gold stars surrounding a pool on the National Mall, a vast swathe of green in the heart of the nation's capitol.

in this one vet's opinion many years overdue, some of the drill instructors and n.c.o.s that taught me my trade were ww2 vets of places like iwo jima, guadalcanal, peleliu and okinawa, then only 5 years later they went to korea, inchon, heartbreak ridge, "frozen chosin" and lot of other places nobody ever heard of. then some few of those left carried on in viet nam. hate bush if you will but this is one thing he has done right.

I am really glad they finally signed this also

Its a shame though, they it will damage the sight lines--I wonder if there isn't a better place, where it won't be dwarfed by the lincoln and washington momuments. I wouldn't like that one bit...its a really important momument though...

It is long overdue! My husbands' paternal grandfather was a navigator in WWII. He's one of the greatest men I know.
