That's where most of my geneology is from. Maybe you guys can get back there some day if you really want to. I've heard it is so pretty. I want to see the castles...or what is left standing of them. I don't care if they're in perfect shape. i just want to touch an older way of life!!!!!

What base are you going to be stationed at? How long is the tour? (I lived in England for seven years, at RAF Lakenheath and Daws Hill) It's situated in a great place for travelling-I'd recommend going to Scotland, and renting a cottage somewhere in the countryside...it's lovely. As for England itself, a lot of the castles are great (would NOT recommend Buckingham, imho, unless you like paying lots of money to see gold walls, doors, etc...it's too opulent for me), but you might want to be warned before you go that it tends to rain. One year we had about 14 days the whole year that there wasn't some kind of rain. Not a lot of thunderstorms, or snow (as long as you're in the southern part), just rain, and the occasional hail/sleet storm. However, all the rain does make it very green! :D I hope you have fun-it's great to live overseas (can't wait til junior year in college, when I'm studying abroad *grin*).

oohhhh I 2nd the thought at staying in a little cottage in the countryside at Scotland, my husband and I took our holidays to scotland in 98' & it was absoltuley stunning!!! There were mabey 2 or 3 (at MOST) little cottages in the village that we stayed, an increadibly small store & one little restaurant .. there was a creek running through the center of the village & then nothing but tree's and green hills. Oh I'd love to go back!

We are going to RAF Alconbury, but most housing and functioning is at RAF Molesworth. The bases are just a few miles apart. I think it's a 4 year tour. I just hope it doesn't get cancelled due to war or a higher ranking person who doesn't want us to go. That happened to us 5 years ago. We had orders somewhere nice and my hubby's boss actually got our orders cancelled so that they could keep him there. I was so heart broke. I hope it doesn't happen again. In fact, I hope this move goes swift and smooth. My heart has longed for this since I was 5 years old. By the way, does anyone have any idea how long a flight is out of New York to England? I hate flying......but I will do it glady for England!!!!!

I don't know about England but it's abouta 6 hour flight if I remember right, from Dublin Airport to JFK in NY ~ so I'm guessing that it would be just a tad longer going over to the UK.
