Well... my parents asked our landlord if they could use the small backyard behind the apartment to plant flowers and such. I figure that it might be wise for me to plant some herbs and such and take advantage of the availability of the garden while I am still at home. I live in a very "icky" city and there is a parking lot right across from the garden space (i'm not sure is all the exhaust is good for plantlife).. and my mother has taken up to feeding pigeons in the backyard as well...

I am curious if the pigeons may be of any danger to the new plants growing there. The only other birds that come by are sparrows and those tiny shiny black ones. the smaller birds have seemed to have taken up residence in the mulberry bushes.
If none of these birds are a problem, we were considering putting in a bird feeder of some sort...

What are some plants and herbs that would be able to tolerate this horrid city existence? would it be advisable to grow anything edible?
