Carvaka is a materialistic and atheistic school of thought in India, focusing on human betterment and pleasure rather than looking to a deity or belief system. It was very critical of the Vedas, calling them demonic literature. There is no life after death either, according to Carvaka. All religion and gods are manmade and seeking pleasure in the here and now is important, because we cannot do so once we are dead, because we cease to exist.
