Let us discuss ULLR. I am extremely interested in Him, and He in me, since I've been obsessing over Him for the past few months, but nobody ever talks about Him, here. This makes me a sad Viking, especially since there are numerous regions in Europe bearing His name. ULLENSAKER comes to mind, here. The municipality even has a picture of Him, for their arms.

What do you know of Him? Have you used, or encountered, His rune, IHWAZ, lately?

Ydalir it is called, where Ullr has Himself a dwelling made

Sadly, all I know about him is that there's a tavern named after him in Breckenridge, CO and that they have an annual Ullr Fest there. And that's not even really about him. It's more about Breckenridge's obsession with all things related to skiing. Although I always thought it was pretty awesome they have a festival with his name, even if they don't actually worship him or anything.

There is an old Roman proverb. Called or not called, the god will be there.

ULLR loves to ski, too. Maybe even more so than Skadi. They called Him the BOW-GOD, or the SKI-GOD.

Even if they're not actually worshipping Him, there He is. It has all the trappings of a festival to honour Him! :bigredgri

He is the son of sif, husband of skadi god of the hunt, snow and skiing. Many modern ski areas have "ullerfest" and sort of pay homage to him. He's also the god of oath rings, and good to call on when you are in need of protection so he might shield you with his shield. I asked him all the time to watch over my husband while he was deployed. He's the god i'm closest too. I find him rather aloof...except when I ski, or there is snow about...which sadly has not been lately for me as I've had to move south, and haven't been able to ski in years :( I've heard theories that he's an older god, and obviously was very important for a time...important enough to give his name to various places.

I have read that He is the god of single combat, or duels. I have also read that for a certain number of months in the year, He serves as Hel's consort. I, too, have heard of His immense age, which interests me greatly. One would think there would be more resources about such a storied, aged Deity, but there is very little to be found.

Hmm, this is a god that looks like he was once really popularly worshipped, but as we approach into the Viking Age and the time when texts were written that he'd fallen out of popular favor in lieu of other deities (we see in literary sources that he was once tied to the swearing of oaths on rings, and we see this later as somehing we see occur with other deities).

In the last few years (like 5 years or sooner) there was a discovery of an ancient cultic site to him in Scandinavia (Sweden specifically). He appears very briefly in the poetic and prose eddas, skaldic poetry, and the Gesta Danorum (as a wizard with magical means of transportation).

He's a god associated with survival in the winter (skiing, hunting, archery, etc.), he's a warrior and a leader. He kinda of reminds me of the modern day swiss guards that patrol the alps on skis. He's associated with oath rings, and with a shield that can be used as a boat. Various sources have different backgrounds for him.

I find him to be a God to work with to overcome obstacles, and for blessings on leadership and/or winter survival.

A few years ago, there was a fantasy coin-maker, that made "Vinland" coins with Ullr on them. I purchased one of these at the larger size as a drawer pull, you can see the image here from this past year's Yule altar: http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/339/4/c/yule_2010_c_by_wanderingmage-d34blbo.jpg

Today in Breckenridge, Colorado there's an "Ullr Fest" which is really a big party and ski festival, and is only named for the God. But there's a cool statue of him, which this is a photo of it:http://www.deviantart.com/print/7981715/
