LOL!! It is a math riddle. It was shown to me while I was having an arterial blood draw done when I was ten. Basically all the answers will be two digit numbers that, when added together equal nine.

Not sure if I explained that clearly. Say your answer is 18, I say tell me one of the digits and I will tell you the other...you tell me 8 and I automatically know it is a 1. Or if you tell me 5, I know the other digit is a 4..etc.

I thought it was cool then and I still do.

Okay, I see how all the numbers are tied to the number 9, but how does it know the correct sequence of symbols (if you try it several times)? :eyebrow:

Theres
March 6th, 2003, 06:22 PM
the symbol listing resets differently each time.
if you look at the one that corresponds to the number 9 (or any multiple), that will be the 'correct' symbol each time.

now that you know, don't you just hate knowing? (lol)

okay I must be dense cause I dont get it. When I purposely don't hold the symbol in my head it gets it wrong. When I think on it it is always right. I picked random symbols. How does it get it right?
Someone has to explain this to me better than the nine thing.

And now I made it mad cause it wont work anymore.

No no no no it can't just be some riddle thing, how does it know what number you're thinking of first? Aaaaaargh it's soooo weird

Here's another attempt to explain how it works. (Don't read this message any further if you don't want the "mystery" explained.)
;)

;)
;)
;)

;)
;)

When you pick a two-digit number, add the digits, and then subtract your answer from the original two digit number there are only 9 possible answers.
Example: 23 was picked as the two digit number.
2+3=5
Subtract 5 from 23 and you get 18.

The only possible answers you'll get, no matter what two-digit number you start with, will be one of the following nine possibilities:
9
18
27
36
45
54
63
72
81

(Notice the pattern in the possible answers? They also all have their digits add up to nine. 1+8=9, 2+7=9, etc.)

If you do the trick on that webpage you should notice that the list of numbers and symbols changes each time. But if you look carefully, you'll notice that in each chart the symbol is always the same for those nine special numbers I listed above. The rest of the numbers have symbols assigned randomly -- it doesn't matter what they are as they're never answers if the math is done correctly.

So each time, there is really only one symbol that could be correct, since it's the same symbol for the nine possible correct answers.

Give it a try again and compare the symbols for those nine numbers if you're not convinced! The link again was http://mr-31238.mr.valuehost.co.uk/assets/Flash/psychic.swf

If I'm wrong, of course, someone please explain the correct answer. (I figured it out by doing it a few times and noting which numbers always had the same symbols each time.)

Storm
March 7th, 2003, 02:38 PM
I get it now!!!!!! And every time you guess the symbols for the correct answers change. I did not notice that before. Thanks!!!!!

But it doesn't work if you choose 99.

Try it.

But that's not true. It said any two digit number, 99 is a two digit number.

9+9 = 18, that's not between 1 and 9. If you continue with 1+8 = 9, the crystal ball doesn't give the right answer.

You have to do more than just add the digits. ;) Here are the steps:

1. Pick a two-digit number (example: 99)
2. Add the digits (9+9=18)
3. Subtract that from your original two-digit number (99 - 18 = 81)

81 is one of the nine possible answers -- so if you check the symbol beside 81 on that chart, then click the crystal ball, you'll see the symbol displayed.

Be sure to do all three steps in the math to get one of those magic nine possible answers.

heheh, if it dont work for ya, ya need to double check your math.

It is a constant. The only times I fooled it, was when I didnt do may math right.

you can just push the button over and over (I did) and it will always
corespond to those numbers Ben gave.

Nice work Ben.;)

It works on random probability of likely numbers, obviously, and I have evidently been random enough to avoid it three of three times. First time I chose 23, and got 18.. not the little book. Next I chose 57, got 45 and the wrong symbol again. Picked 23 again and got another wrong symbol.

sorry, it doesnt work on a random probability of numbers. It is
always going to choose those numbers on Ben's list. You dont
even need to pick a number. Just pick one off the list. and do
it over and over. keeping CAREFUL track of the number, I suggest
81 its easiest to find and not lose, and keep clicking. 81 comes
up every time. 20 straight. Now if it didnt load fast enough for
comp you might get a lagged reading. But the program is
straightforward simple. It has no choices to make.

But I can do entertainment magic. This kind of mathematical method is one of the more usefull magical methods. There aren't many people that see through it in one take.

The site is stupid in offering a repetition of the effect. Doing it over and over again has to trigger some intelligence. This kind of effects should only be played once, then the conjuror should move on to the next effect.

Note on the looks of the site: nicely done! Designed well, the crystal ball theme certainly fits. But why does it need Flash? Only to hide the mathematical programming?

Its relatively simple once you figure it out. Using the given mathmatical equasion, no matter what number you picked, it will always be one of 9 numbers, 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, or 81. All of those numbers use the *same* symbol. So, in a way, it never really guesses what symbol you picked, but tells you what you have to pick, letting you think it was all you.
