The Peoples of the Americas have come forward to represent
the consciousness that: There is an Alternative! Another
Americas is Possible! This consciousness is what will decide the
future of the FTAA.
No matter how many statements the likes of Jean Chretien and
George W. Bush make that they are the legitimate representatives of the peoples of their countries, they cannot
overcome the fact that their conception of legitimacy is totally
anachronistic. It pertains to a political system which has been surpassed by the reality that the inherent drive of a democracy
worthy of the name is that the people want sovereignity to be
vested in them.
They want political processes to be modernized to conform to
this objective and right. They are working to make it so.
What is democracy? has now become a fundamental issue
which the peoples of the Americas will answer through their
deeds. For the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of
the United States to lay false claims that they are the legiimate
representatives of the people rings hollow indeed. One was
elected by less than 26% of the eligible voters, and the other was
not even elected as a result of an expression of the universal
suffrage.
Words are cheap when you are coralled behind a wall of shame
with the armed might of the state spewing its venom against
those who went to Quebec to express their right to decide.
It shows that the struggle over the power to decide has broken out in all earnest.
We Decide! is the demand of the times. There is an Alternative!
Another Americas is Possible!
Demand A Binding Referendum On The FTAA!
One of the main demands put forward by the thousands upon
thousands of people throughout the Americas on the issue of
the FTAA is for the peoples to decide. Before and during the
Quebec City Days of Action, thousands of Canadians expressed
the need for a referendum on the FTAA. Now the youth in Quebec
who were in the forefront of organizing to make the Quebec City
Days of Action a success have taken the initiative to launch a
countrywide petition calling on the government to organize such
a referendum.
I call on the Canadian working class and people to go all out to
support the initiative of the youth for a countrywide petition
demanding a binding referendum on the FTAA. People from all
walks of life should take up this demand and get involved to make
it a success.
