Received this on a another list:

WINDS OF THE REDE

The winds are significant messengers of Nature, but only to those who listen carefully. The following verses can help you to interpret the airy bulletins. The late Gwen Thompson, prominent in New England witch circles, drew these from her hereditary Book of Shadows, a rede derived from the witches of Somerset, England:

Heed the Northwind's mighty gale;
Lock the door and drop the sail.
When the wind comes from the South,
Love will kiss thee on the mouth.
When the wind blows from the East,
Expect the new and set the feast.
When the West wind blows o'er thee,
Departed spirits restless be.

The North Wind is powerful and must never be met head on; move into it shoulder first to show respect for its might. This wind brings transformation and must be greeted by willingness to recognize and bend with its power. The witch with the wisdom to understand the forces behind the great North Wind can harness such energy and transform it into a meaningful experience.

The South Wind brings the gentlest message, that of love. Its lesson is easily accepted, but sometimes difficult to understand. This wind predicts that we will soon be speaking of love and that the object of our desires will hear our gentle words. Take advantage of a strong South Wind to bring union, strengthen partnerships, make friends, and realize the gift we have been given throughout our incarnations.

The East Wind can be the most challenging for "expect the new" keeps you wondering about what person or event is about to affect your life. What ever it may be will cause change, and change usually brings stress or conflict before it brings stability. But this is the path to growth. The East Wind blows in a freshness to life and many new opportunities.

The West Wind is frequently misunderstood. the witch must realize that this can be a time to listen to the wind for messages from the dead. If you listen carefully, you will hear the voices of those you lost, sending you words of love and rememberance.

~ Theitic

It's interesting what it says about the East wind. I've noticed that it is always very windy here when new moon is approaching. I've always thought of this as blowing away negativity, bringing change and new beginnings. The goddess Oya is also associated with the wind.

I'm quite confident that the East Wind is specifically associated with Spring. Has anyone else heard this? If so, I can see how the East Wind will bring change. Like the East Wind, spring is full of change: flowers blooming, warmer days, birds chirping. We can look forward to all the good upcoming changes.

:D I like that affirmation! I'm the one who needs to do some serious changing this spring and I intend to focus on that.

Each wind does have it's own season--my favorite is the West Wind which is associated with the Fall. My favorite time of the year.

As a matter of fact, one of my online handles uses that wind direction (a variation of) West Wind Angel. :)

Freyja, you just blew me away with this. My spirit guide's name is Gwen (Gwendolyne) and I live in New England.

Whenever I see her name, I know something is about to happen or I will see it two more times for a sign of something to come.

But I've never had the two come together like that. This better be something real good! (Hmmm, Spring, East wind, change???) :p :D

That makes sense, since the west is connected with your emotions. Does the west wind sadden your mood when you're otherwise happy? Do you feel like your ancestor spirits are speaking to you about change?

Yeah the west wind does still make me sad and restless
where i live the west wind is usually hot, as its coming of the inland/bush areas it also usually happens in summer, they are quiet violent and often cause any bushfires to go roaring out of control

cant say that i feel my ancestors talking to me
i just get this tremendous feeling of restlessness, the need to go away and an overwhelming sadness, that i can never track to a cause, so yes it does sadden an otherwise happy mood!

Same here! Sometimes I love to sit quietly on the grass and just listen to the wind. Ask the wind a question. Perhaps it will whisper you the answer. :)

hehe! here too! :) I love the wind, always have, especially in the summer, when it's hot, but really windy, a nice cool wind, but not cold, and you can't even hear what someone beside you is saying, I feel like i'm in my little bubble and that the wind is shielding me from everything, protecting me, I love that.... :)

Hmm.. this has definitely been interesting.. :) But what it made me think of just now was the first act of "magic" I ever performed in my life. It definitely was the start of the path I'm still on now, and it was at age 6 that I stood in my grandmother's back yard and "played with the wind". My family always eyed me awfully funny.. *shrug*

But... something I started doing back then, and still do now, with much success.. is talking to the wind. Actually speaking, with my mouth and vocal cords, and receiving responses from the breezes and winds. Not English though.. I don't really know what to call it.. its just series of sounds that I've learned earn results, and with trial and error managed to sometimes determine meanings for (such as "ehras ehras borkhawl" spoken in a sort of loud whisper, which tends to instigate a sudden gust from behind me after a repitition or two).

I wonder if anyone else does things like this? Maybe I should start another thread about it.. hm.

Well, last night the wind woke me because it was so strong and it literally sounded like there was a tornado outside our window. I woke Mol up and we turned on the tv to check for a warning. Nothing was there so we checked on the weather bug and saw a storm was going to be coming through, but it said the wind was only around 7mph. I am telling you it was higher.

I wish now that I would have went outside to see if I could tell which direction it was coming from. It would have been interesting to look at in this light. I am definately going to pay more attention to the wind directions now. Thanks for this Freyja!

Since the beginning of this post I've started paying more attention to the direction the wind is coming from. I just opened up all my storm windows this weekend - nothing yet, but I'm working on it. I've got to the North a narrow portion of the Hudson River (you can see it out my window) and so far the only thing I can tell you is that the wind coming from the North is a lot colder!!!

Thanx Freyja!!

lol! Don't take me the wrong way, but it made me think of Pocahontas, I know, I'm looking stupid here, but in the movie, the Grandmother-Tree told her to listen to the wind, and at first she couldn't understand, but when she "listened with her heart" she started understanding, just a thought here! ;)

Semele, what side of the house is your bedroom on? It's probable that's the direction the wind was blowing from.

What folks were saying earlier about talkign to the wind and hearing responces, I've had that happen on a semi-regular basis. Usually, it was in a very strong and immediate fashion, something to get my attention at that time for a specific purpose. Like a stiff breeze blowing dust into my face and sounding like some one screaming, making me pause to cover my eyes just long enough to avoid getting hit by a car as I was crossing the college campus at one point in time. That just freaked me out.

That happened a week after I saw my doppleganger and was almost hit by a car in the exact spot she had stood a few seconds earlier. <shudders> I don't care what anybody says, if you see your doppleganger, it's a warning that death is nearby. I've had too many times of narrowly avoiding it by seeing mine. <shudders> It's a really creepy feeling.
