View Full Version : Drawn to Artemis and Diana both?

Recently, I seem to be drawn to Diana as well as Artemis. I've always had an affinity for Artemis, but always saw her as the maiden of the new moon, wild and independent, especially of men. Lately, I feel that Diana, as the independent but strong motherly aspect, while still being "maiden" in the sense of independence from men, has possibly been making herself known. Does anyone worship the two as separate deities or aspects of the moon or tripple Goddess or something different? Thanks.

I must say I do not have an affinity for Artemis as I fully honor, worship and am sworn to her. Have been so since I was a youth and am now 52 years of age, not bad for being male. I wish I could say how you describe Artemis is the truth but to me that would be a bold face lie. You are only describing a slim aspect of the Arcadian Artemis (Wild & Independent) and the Olympian Artemis (New Moon and never bound to men) but she is so much more than that narrow defination.

With regard to Diana all I can say is I am aware of her. Artemis was not particulary eager to share me with Diana. I was in Korfu (Corfu) Greece and looking at buying a statue that was supposed to be Artemis when Artemis spoke to me and said the statue was of "That Roman Diana not me!" Needless to say I did not buy it, yet picked one up to again look at in Rhodes and Artemis again spoke saying "I Told you that was not me it's that Roman Diana!" So I go the impression pretty quickly they did not go well together, well for me anyway.

The problem with Diana and Artemis is that a lot of the lore of the two has become crossed and the original lore is somewhere in between. For instance Artemis with dogs on coins does not show up till the Roman period, on greek coins she is always with a stag or bull. Yet Diana has always been portrayed with dogs and only became associated with stag's on coins after Rome and Greece merged somewhat. Though at Ephesos (Ephesus) all that was done was the name was changed from Artemis of Ephesus to Diana of Ephesus and probably later to Mary of Ephesus.

Hi.
Ever since I read about Artemis in Greek mythology in middle school, I've felt drawn toward her. That's the best word I can think of right now to describe my own personal encounter with Goddess in whatever form. For some reason, I didn't associate her with the moon until I read about that particular association after finding paganism. I seem to have been drawn by the strength and independence that she demonstrates, someone who loves animals and nature but who has no problem protecting herself or them or, in other ways, her friends, although mythology is up for debate.
Recently, I seem to have been drawn to Diana for some of the same reasons, but for others as well. She seems more maternal in a way, more mature in that she has grown in wisdom and experience. She seems just as strong and independent as Artemis, but more so. By the way, this is not at all to imply that Artemis and Diana are interchangeable for each other, as I see them as two separate deities. Diana's domain seems to also be enhanced from that of Artemis, being associated with not only hunting, virgin, as in independent, women, and childbirth, but the sunn and moon. I was wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences regarding these two deities. Thanks.

I always had a pull towards Artemis, mainly because of the mythology which surrounds her. My pull towards her has reached the extent that I named my cat after her.
