You can sign your phone number up with your state to reduce unwanted telemarketing calls!
See if your state is on the "Band-Wagon" ;)

Darn! NJ is not on the list. I would love to sign up for that. I get waaay to many calls and they really aggravate me.
I'll have to keep checking back to see if it gets added.

I signed up for the "no call list" just before my home phone got slammed by MCI. Once I sorted them out I switched to a cel phone. Don't get any telemarketing calls now. Don't get slammed either. But I wonder whether the "no call list" is working, after such a fuss was made in the news about it we haven't heard anything about the results.

CA is on the list, but only because they're proposing a program. (The link had details.)
What alarms me is that, per the CA web-page, there have been scams involving "no-call" lists. I guess the moral is be careful, & check everything with an official source.
(The Federal program has not yet received funding from Congress.)

I've never had a problem with telemarketers. I mostly get charities calling, because I'm on so many of their lists, but even then it's not often at all.
I don't mind when telemarketers do call, I mean, everyone has to earn a living somehow, and someone, somewhere must be buying whatever it is they have to sell or they'd've stopped calling long ago. *shrugs* It's like spam email. It doesn't cause me any pain, so I don't worry about it.
