My "significant other" raised a rather good question just a few minutes ago... Why are scorpions associated with Water? I looked at her blankly, and then I think my exact words were "I'll ask MysticWicks.. they've got smart people there." Heh.

So.. does anyone have any idea? Why is Scorpio a water sign? Why does the Moon tarot card typically feature a scorpion in a body of water? These and more.. ;)

I have absolutely no idea, but following in the footsteps of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush I shall ramble on for a little while about something of which I know nothing just to pass on a sense of understanding and concern for the general wellfare of the society in which we all live, which by the way is still being devastaed by tons of diseases and even starvation across the world! I think I did pretty good there, taking the emphasis away from the scorpion. :)

In my best guess, I would think maybe someone had the thought process linking Leviathans and sea monsters to Wyverns and then Wyverns to Scorpions. I have absolutely no founding for this conjecture, but the fact that I say it confidently makes it look good.

Well, I had fun. :D
Hope you find a real answer. ;)

Is the Moon card associated with the sign of Scorpio in tarot? With the runes, the Moon in tarot is associated with the sign of cancer and the element of air (Algiz).

Scorpio corresponds with Eihwaz, all four elements and the Hanged Man tarot, so that doesn't work either.

Now that I've confused you more........

The animal on the Moon card is a crayfish.

Scorpio is associated with emotions and intuitiveness, both concepts often related to water and femininity.

A scorpian usually is a dessert critter right? so water would be important for it... of course you could go the other way and say it was a fire critter...
Scorpians and, crabs/lobsters/shrimp/crayfish are related scientificly, though not to closely.
But in astrology its that sense of loyalty (a scorpian is suicidal in deffence of its nest) and sense of revenge (known to sting even as being killed) that show deep emotional attachments- something associated with water. "a scorpios first reaction will be a deep emotional response"(yahoo)

AS a scorpio and a water lover I never questioned it myself.

Like Grey said, the scorpions are desert animals, water would be important for them, but I also think that water might represent the Scorpio in a way, that's why it's associated with it. If I find anything about it, I'll tell you! :)

Thanks guys.. I think maybe I'm coming to terms with it now.. Thanks to the two or three or so of you that corrected my Tarot reference(s) -- I'm working with a different deck lately than I'm used to, so I'm in that half-confused state -- and I think that after some of your posts -- especially gray's -- I'm really getting an idea now of what the thought process might have been. The bit about water being at the forefront of a desert animal's thoughts never even occurred to me.. bad me, no cookie.

Thanks again.
