Thanks to my absent-minded youngest, I did not find out until Saturday that my first grandbaby was born on Thursday! Her daddy lives in upstate NY, doesn't have his own phone and didn't have my new number and his brother forgot to give me the message:mad:

Cadence Arden was born on 3/13/03 - I can't wait to look up the astro implications of that! She was 9 lbs. 8 oz.

They'll be sending some pics via e-mail. I haven't bought anything yet but did have fun browsing through baby girl clothes at Wal-Mart yesterday. My boys owe me the pleasure of being able to dress somebody up cute! Especially Cadence's daddy, who I've begun referring to as "the biological fruit of my womb - that rotted" :D But he done me proud with actually being married for over a year before reproducing........

So, what grandma names do you all prefer? I think I'm going to choose Gemma. Some of the families I work with call their grannies that.

I had a Granny and a Nana. I wouldn't mind Nana, either, since that is actually one of the names of the goddess. My kids called my mother Nanny - she liked it but I never did. I can't help but have "goat" come to mind :T

I've worked with lots of African American families and they call their grandma's Big Mama! I think that's really cute but more exclusive to their culture.

Are there any heathen or pagan names for this term that some of us might not be aware of?

I like Gemma. But..I also like Gram. And I also like the French "Meme". I've also heard "Mim".

I forgot about Mime! That's pretty common here in Oklahoma, believe it or not.

I reminded Flar that he's a grandpa :D and now I get to tell his mom that she's a great-grandma - she was kind of blown away at Christmas when she met my youngest and realized that she'd acquired a 19 year old grandson as her first :T

Congratulations! New babies are always so sweet. :)

And I must commend Miss Cadence on her choice of birthdays -- hers is the day before my own daughter's. (And I love her name -- very pretty and musical. Erm, pun not intended. *blush*)

I like Gemma; I've never heard that before. :)

My hubby's maternal grandparents were Dutch, and he called his grandmother Meow-meow. (Not sure how that's actually spelled, but that's what it sounds like.)

:rotfl: That would be fitting, since Gemma or Mime or whatever I finally choose has lots of cats :D

My son chose Cadence based on the marches he did in the Army, so it was meant to be musical:huh: No pun taken ;)

Oops, she was 9 lbs. 10 oz. instead of 8 oz.

Yes, she is a big girl, and her daddy was my biggest also at 8 lbs. 11 oz. I immediately worried that Mama may be diabetic but he said that she was tested and is fine :)

Congrats, Freyja!

My son calls hubby's mom Nana and my mom Pawpaw (chinese for grandmother on the mother's side). :D My brother's child would call my mom Amah or Mahmah.

Congrats!! Cadence is a big girl with a beautiful name.

My niece called my mom Gam, and I've always kind of liked that. I like Gemma, too. When my daughter was very small, she called me "Bougini" for awhile. Maybe when I'm a grandma, I'll aspire to my inner Bougini-ness, and have them call me that.

Ummm. . . . . do you mind if I borrow "the biological fruit of my womb - that rotted"? :D

Hehe, that line is from "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood." I didn't really pick up on it until I saw it for the third time!

I like Boughini! That's the most unusual one I've heard.

Wild, Paw-Paw for a grandma is really interesting! That's common for grandpa's where we live.

Cadence is 1500 miles away and she probably will be talking but the time I'm financially able to go and see her in person :(

Congratulations, Freyja! :)

I love her name and I'm partial to Nana myself (I called my grandmother Nanny when I was little and then Nan when I got older).

Congrats Freyja!!!

As to the Big Mama thing, in my family it's the norm - My aunt's grandchildren refer to her and her husband as Daddy Bill and Mama Jackie, since their great-grandparents are Big Daddy and Mama Helen. (For the record, we're a mix of Caucasian and Native American) And of course, Tennessee Williams' Big Mama was a white matriarch. My Native American Great-Grandmother was just "Granny." Here in the south most of the titles are followed by a personal name, either first or last.

Congradulations to you and the rest of the family. I used to call my grandmother "meemaw". The other day I heard a little girl in the store call her grandmother that and I actually stopped and had to look. I know my meemaw has been dead for 11 years now...but I still expect to see her when I hear that name.

Congrats my lovely friend. Cadence is certainly a lucky little girl. :)

I never had a grandmother myself. Three of my grandparents had passed before I was born so I'm a bit unexperienced in the naming of a new grandma.

However, I'm partial to plain ol' Grandma myself. (Forgive the "ol' " part. )

It's simple, right to the point and says it all. :p :T

Congratulations babe!!! Special baby boingys for you!

Congratulations, Gemma! :boing:

My grandparents on my mother's side were Grammy and Grandpa...on my father's side they were Grandma and Granddad. *shrug*

I like anything French, though. :D

And congrats again! What a great year for you!

Oh - and Cadence (what a lovely name) was born on my (favourite) aunt's birthday. A fine choice of dates. ;)

Yeah, Freyja. I already sent my congratulations on another thread, but since Cadence is such a big girl a second CONGRATS should be ok.

I've never heard Gemma for grandmother either. Wow, I just learned something new. My grandmother's husband started calling her Grammy even though she hated it (or maybe because of that ;)) and the name stuck. I would have liked to be called Grammy also, but my daughter decided to teach her children to call me Grandma. So I compromised on Gramma, but my first granddaughter mispronounced it as Gray-ma. * wry grin * Hey, I'm not that old.

My first granddaughter, Katlin, weighed 5 lbs 8 oz. My second granddaughter, Nove 'Mber, weighed 5 lbs 4 oz, only about half the size of your Cadence, eh? My daughter had medical problems, especially the second pregnancy which is why the girls were born so small. Both are completely healthy except for inheriting allergies. I'm so blessed to live with them and be their Nanny. I wouldn't trade these years for anything.

:T I'm considering it! Or maybe she should just call me Freyja....

Thanks so much, everyone! It seems like her daddy was just born about three weeks ago  and he'll be 22 this June. My youngest will be 20 on April 3rd, and the oldest 23 on March 30.

I'm thrilled to be able to dress a little girl up!

I've been like that since January. My best friend and his wife asked me to be godmother of their new little one and ever since I was given the honor---I've been taking every spare penny I have to spoil her! LOL

We've had a huge amount of boys born in my family, so this has been a lot of fun for me.

Of course, my mother has bought one or two things for my little one since, and she makes it a point of telling me this constantly, this is her one chance to have something CLOSE to a grandchild of her own!!!
