Is there an element you feel more drawn too such as being drown to the ocean or the winds of a storm the flicker of a fire or the gentle comfort of the earth beneath your feet?

:sunny: Merry Meet,

First of all........... WELCOME :D

My name (silvermoon) is based on a combination of things:
1. silver is the metal associated with my star sign (cancer)
2. moon is the planet associated with my star sign
3. moon is also associated with the element of water (ie tides)which is the element associated with my star sign of cancer.

All these contributed to my name BUT most of all it felt and sounded right to me.

So if you are stuck  on a name and an element try looking at your star sign for inspiration.

I hope this helps you :D

if you dont' remember your dreams (you ARE dreaming... if you didn't dream you wouldn't get any rest... REM sleep is the kind of sleep that actually rests your body... and it's the time when we have the most vivid dreams), then I suggest learning about Lucid dreaming. I'm not sure if this has been talked about in any of the forums (since i'm kinda new here), but I've been doing it for years and I teach it to many people. By lucid dreaming.. you become aware that you are sleeping.. and you can reach into your subconsious and learn many things about yourself. It takes time to learn and get comforatable with.. but once you learn it.. there are endless possbilities.

Well, it is said that you can get help on choosing your magical name meditating... so have you tried that?

I'd try one that includes a hot bath, candles and a little visualization... like that you are travelling on a star somewhere, and you come to a place... and there are people there... you must imagine the exact look yourself as to how it looks there and who is there... this is your magickal space... and then ask them for advice, let them whisper one name (or several names) in your ear... write them down as soon as you "wake up" from your meditation and maybe they've told you one name that you like... if so, choose that name... :)

Blessed be

My magickal name is still under construction. My advice is, just let it come to you in time. Eventually, you'll discover a name that just sounds Right. When you find it, it will seem like it ought to have been completely obvious to you all your life. The meditation idea sounds like a good ones. Stick to words and subjects that you feel a strong connection to. For instance, mine comes out of Norse myth, because I have roots in Norway, and I've always had a fascination for it. Don't stress over it, and don't go looking. Your magickal name will find you on its own sooner or later.

i figure i'll add my part... but things are kinda complicated in my case... as I have quite a bit of recollection of past lives and past spiritual exisitence and whatnot... so that all came into play.

I spent a long time re-creating this 'ancient' language i had in my head... and formed my actual 'name' from that language based on memories and this really strange song i had in my head for years (my "song of creation").

For me.. my name is Lunaria'ni'espi.. which basically meant child of fading light and coming darkness (sunset and moonrise).

My element.. hmm.. although i'm an "air sign"(gemini), i've always been drawn to water... love it!

blessings to you in your path to find yourself.

I did a meditation this morning. Someone posted some ideas in the ritual forum (I think~I'll try to go look for it in a minute) . I went for a walk in the forest and came to a cave. The walls of the cave were lined in crystals of each color of the chakras. I stayed with each color and absorbed the energies and then moved on to the next. At the end of the cave I went to a clearing, and found a tree at the edge. I sat at the base of the tree and sent roots down and branches up. Then I asked the Lord and Lady to help me find a name and that I would be looking for signs. Just then a breeze blew in my window, and I thought of Whispering Winds. I was not crazy about that one so I kept meditating. Then I started to see shaped in the black of my eyes being closed. When my eyes are closed I see shapes and colors. I don't know if anyone else does, but I do:p The colors were green and I saw the shape of a wolf form. And then a crecent moon with the points facing north. So I am now thinking Moon Wolf. I am going to continue looking for signs today and see what happens. I love the name but it sounds like a Native American name and I am not drawn there, so I am a bit confused.

I have no idea if this is the right way to do this. or if there is a "right" way to do this. 8O

My element is water- there is no doubt in my mind on that one. I am also a cancer and am ruled by water, but I just love the water! That has always been how I relax and feel at home.

I hope this helps!

Oh, I posted that meditation, can't remeber where either though...

Hope it helped you some Chryssi, I like to do that meditation often, not only for help choosing a name but just for the fact that when you've come out on the other side of the cave you are at your special place... it is really nice to be there... I always come to this wonderful meadow... :)

However I like Moon Wolf, and don't bother if it sounds native american even though you aren't drawn there, if you like the name, go with it anyways. :)

Greetings,

How I came upon my name is actually very basic. I didn't meditate at all... I was just looking through one of those name dictionaries. I must have read every name and every name meaning, until I came upon the 'W', and there it was, Widukind. The other names just didn't feel right, although Uther and Alan kind of spoke to me, but I felt the name should feel reall right. Widukind is a Germanic name, and as it happens, I have Germanic roots. The meaning can easily be traced back into Dutch (my native language) and even into English.

Wid = forest, wood
kind = child

So, child of the forest. I feel this is the name of my True Self, but I'm not even sure what that means... I'll ponder that some more...

Brightest Blessings,

Widukind

Time for me to put my tuppence in the pile.

I chose the name Kiya as my 'working title' so to speak. I've always liked Egyptian history and mythology, but I wanted to keep my feet on the ground, so I thought I'd choose a Queen's name rather than a deity's. Kiya is a minor queen, but she MAY have been the mother of Tutenkhamun (sorry, my spellings atrotious).

I liked this, fairly low-key, but she may have given birth to great things. So I picked it as my working name. I'm sure a name will come to me in time, but I feel I have a lot to learn before I commit to a name yet.

Emy, I thought it was you that posted that meditation. All of the meditations you post are great, so please keep them coming. As an update on my name, all day long I saw moons and wolves together. So much, in fact, that it was getting a bit freaky :p Then as I went to bed I thought of Lady Moon Wolf and Crystal Moon Wolf. I am going to check the numerology of all three names and see if one matches my birth number and use that one!

**Update~News Flash** I checked all three and...drum roll....

Lady Moon Wolf (my fave!!!) was a match!

LMAO!!!!

My name is from an Anne McCaffery book... For some reason, I was really drawn to the name. (I don't remember what she did in the book) So, I mutated it, and it went from K'ylara to Kaylara. Nightshade is a kind of plant that I felt strong ties to, and felt expressed some of my darker aspects, those left hidden...

My element is water, but strangely enough, I also work well with fire... (Not so strange if you consider that my Sign is Cancer, but I am very close to the Leo Cusp.)

My name has changed, and will probably change in my future, but at this point in my life it suits me very well...

I've liked some Irish names. I was especially fond of Morrigan and Zefira in my earlier days. However, they didn't fit me. Then (one of my animals being a Wolf) I wanted to encourporate the word Wolf into my name. However, it still didn't fit.
Then I asked for guidance on it. That night I had a dream of a hawk, a beautiful bird who was attracted to me, and came to me, but ran when other people came around. It was definately a shy hawk. lol :p
I woke up that morning and thought to myself....I have never liked birds in my life, how is this possible? But, I tried using the name Shy Hawk. Well, I have to say....the more I use it, the more I feel comfortable with it. I don't know why the Hawk chose me,...I've always felt more in touch with many other animals....but, nevertheless, chose me it did. I am Shy Hawk.
I like Dragons aswell, but that's another thread...;)

As for an element....I don't really want to chose one....I am an Air sign though (Libra)...and I feel closest to Earth I think. But I love them all...:D
Thanks for listening,
Shy Hawk

No rush, the name will come to you in time.

One thing you might do is to think about the subject or meditate on it before you sleep at night and keep a notepad and something to write with handy, I mean within immediate reach. As soon as you wake up write down anything you could remember from a dream that you can remember. There MIGHT be a part of a name in your dream, but don't use every dream because most of the time dreams are just dreams ... IMHO.

I've found that, for me, at least, the element I most closely ascribe to changes. For example, three years ago I felt mildly uncomfortable with water, okay with air, very connected with earth/stone, and paranoid of fire (to the point that when I did meditation on the elements, the first images I got with fire were of a man holding a knife and laughing at me.)

Nowadays, though, I'm okay with water, mildly uncomfortable with air, pretty good with earth/stone, and really connected to fire. Nothing really happened in my life to explain such an abrupt change - the change just happened.

So, I wouldn't worry about finding that one special element too terribly much. :) People aren't static.

I have always been intrugued with methane gas. Since most Wiccans are earth conscious, I can think of no other more earthy element than methane, especially when one considers it origins! With tongue in cheek, I chose the name Methanespirit.

My name is actually a work in progress. I feel I need to change it, but I'm not sure WHY and what I'm going to change it too. It seems kind of weird to me to want to change it, because I haven't used this name (Jade) for that long.

Lately, I've been drawn to cats. I've just had this obsession with cats. I get all giddy and stuff if I see anything having to do with cats. Okay... Maybe not GIDDY, but I think you get my point? lol :D

And, I've ALWAYS been drawn to the moon. Especially the full moon. It just fascinates me so much. If anyone has any input on this, just give me a yell!

Well, I don't know how you feel about Japanese names...but...I'm just trying to help, k? Well, there's the name Suki. One of the chicks in the movie "The Witches of Eastwick" were named Suki. That doesn't really make much difference, I just remembered that. Anyway, in Japanese it means either Love, or Moon. Depending on how you pronounce it...
Just thought I'd put my two cents in.

Merry meet everyone!

I think I've figured out my name - Rowan. I picked it from an Anne McCaffrey book too, the Tower and the Hive series. It's one that's stuck and I am drawn too, even though I have found that it is the feminine equivalent to the Mountain Ash!

I am stuck on an element though. I love the ocean and water in general, everything about it! But I am an Arien and am also drawn to fire. The flickering of a flame, the warmth. So I'm not quite sure which one is right!? Is it possible to have more than one element?

Being VERY new to this, I have yet to find my name, either. My working name for now is genae, which is a combination of my first and middle name (Gennie Renea). It just flows so nicely, and has a different sound. I have no idea what my element is, or whether I am drawn to water, or fire, etc. I don't know anything about numerology, either. Can someone help me in this? My roots are Scandinavian (Swedish) mostly with a little French thrown in. So, don't know where that would take me.
You all are so wonderful for your advice!

Morrigan_Wolfwind
January 16th, 2006, 11:34 PM
I chose the first part of my name because the Morrigan is my favorite goddess. I left the second part of my name open and just started doing numerology with different words/names combined with Morrigan to make sure it was compatible with my destiny number (which is 3).

I was basically casting around for things that meant something to me and doing numerology to see if it worked.

In the end, I picked wolf because it's my favorite animal, and wind because I have an affinity for wind.

So there is my other name; Morrigan Wolfwind, tested and proven by numerology.

Oh--to Genae, numerology is actually very simple once you know the basics. Look it up on a search engine. (And I DO like your name :))

Blessed be.

Just to make things especially interesting ... your magickal name and element can change as you grow in your abilities.

Although I use wolf as my screen name (that's a holdover because it's been my BBS name for a very, very long time), I have had some changes and transitions in my life and magickal practice that have resulted in my magickal name becoming Black Storm Hawk. My element has moved from Earth to Air as part of these changes.

May you grow and learn from your experiences.

I used Numerology to find my name. My given name is an 8, and I wanted to stick with that number as it is a good number for me. So, using the number 8 I came up with not only a name that suited me but was the name of a sacred object AND a power object. As I'm a fire sign by birth and drawn to the Wind/Storm (Air) I felt this was the perfect name. (Boy I hope that makes sense - its early on a Tuesday morning. ;) )

Don't expect it to come to you immediately. Its been 9 years since I've been on my path and my name has changed so many times to reflect where I was on my path then.

I never have had a 'spiritual name' or anything of the song. I (for one) love my real life birth name (Alexander) and as it turns out, it is perfectly aligned with my birth date when using numerology. I just translate my name to Gaelic (Alasdair) and use th at. I like how it sounds too.. (Al-ust-er). Furthermore, I was called it during a meditation with Brighid. Your best bet is to simply feel the elements that call to you most, and play around with words or animals. Either that or enter into meditation and ask for inspiration. Best of luck in finding awen :)

my name is in the process as well.

my element for my astroligical sign is air, and although i'm not really like a libra, i really like air. i like windy days, and when i was little i had dreams that the wind would blow and i could fly.

so, my element is pretty much air.

i really love cats, too. i've had cats since i was born. when i was born, i had a cat, my first memory ever was of a cat sitting near a grill. and my mom has had cats show up at her house since she was little, and so far i've had three stray cats show up at my house. i feel really connected with cats. i was made to be a cat lover, i think.

so cat and air for me. now to just find a name for it.

My advice? Don't get all hung up on it. On either point. The universe knows who you are, and you can do anything just as well under one name as another. If you obsess over it, it'll just keep you awake all night til you pick something out of the sheer sake of picking something.

Same thign for the element question. I think most people figure out what they work best with over time.

There's no little checklist of prerequisites to go through so relax.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm curious... what is the purpose of a magical name? Or knowing your element?

Agaliha

I know this is an old thread, but I'm curious... what is the purpose of a magical name? Or knowing your element?

People like having a magical name for many reasons:

To express their path and spirituality
To express their personality
To protect their identity (usually online)
To mark progress and changes in their spirituality, growth
Some get them when joining a coven and are given by someone else
Some get them when dedicating to a deity (either given by themselves or others)
In Kemetic Orthodoxy (House of Netjeru) you get a Shemsu name when you become a Shemsu (dedicates to the path) given by the Nisut
Some have them to separate the mundane from the spiritual and say use it in rituals. There's probably more reasons than that. Many don't have them at all.

How you get one also has varied opinions:

Some think you should wait, some think you should start out with one
Some name themselves after a Diety, others don't for various reasons
Some are given by Coven leaders, others my themselves
Some keep them secret, others don't
Some pick them, others do rituals/meditations
Some don't even have them
There are many other threads on here about them, some being:

As for an element. I don't see why one needs to have a "patron" element. Being drawn to an element over some others makes sense, I'm really drawn to water myself. I wouldn't worry and fuss over figuring out "your element."
I really don't know the function of having a patron element, but I do know how some figure theirs out:

Whichever you have natural affinity for, are drawn to
Your astrology/natal chart (mine for example has a lot of earth)
Dreams, meditations

Asuka

I've had a problem in naming myself for years, not even necessarily for magickal means. My username "Asuka" is my general online alias, especially in regard to my artwork and on forums in general. I feel my magick name is something that I couldn't share with just everyone. There's always been a certain name that I could just NOT put out there.

If I had to choose a name, I'd probably pick that one. I've had it for years and I feel very connected to it. I "named myself" after a star, because I have a huge fascination and affinity with the cosmos. I think that that's because I believe that my spirit has traveled a great distance to exist on this planet. I can't truly say that I named myself, because I have a true name that goes beyond any name that I could give myself. I know there is a name I need to find that was given to me back wherever my spirit came from, and so I will forever search until my true name comes to me. So, everything else feels temporary.

Elementally, I seem to have an attraction to two different extremes. I'm not sure what one would consider the heavens. I suppose you could call that Air, because I have a love of the sky (as long as it doesn't involve planes -- I love to gaze up at it for hours). At the same time, I love the Water. I don't like to swim very much, but I love to run and play in it. Rivers, lakes, streams, and little natural trickles are something I love, but the ocean is my favourite. A beach at night is my favourite place, as it combines both Air and Water. I think my love of Water comes from my star sign, because I've always had it.
I'm not sure I have one patron element. o_o

not that I know much... but it seems to me (from what I've read) that sometimes you just know... it sounds like you do know your name... and your elementS.

As soon as I read a little in this and similar threads, I finally realized why the name "Aurora Dawn" has always been special to me, but I could not imagine EVER giving that name to a child. It is my name... it is who I am, in a way.

Yep... sometimes you just know.

Maybe that is true. I thought about it, and realised I've had that name for five years, which is longer than I've had ANY name. I suppose if we hadn't done a project on stars in my Earth Science class that day I might not have found it at that point. I don't quite pronounce it the same though, but the spelling remains the same.

In a scence my birthname is as close to a magical name that I have found... I have no name that defines the true me in quite the same way as my birthname Nadja. Nadja means hope and I really connect with that name. I have other aliases Nightwolf, Nightlady and so on, but Nadja defines me, heart and soul, the most...

As for elements, I do always dream about water and snow and as snow is a form of water I would say that my element is water, but I am not completely sure...

If they are, then don't rush. Wait for ideas to come to you, go over the ideas in your mind during meditation, and enjoy working your way through :)

Probably repeated on here many times but....

The Gods know who you are. No "magical" name is going to suddenly make you appear on the Goddess's "To-Do" list.

Research your own birth name. What does it mean, what is the etymology? You may find you already have a magic name.

That is certainly true for me, I´m thinking more and more that my birth name is my magical name... if any name is my magical... A birth name is important in a way no "adopted" name will be... at least that is the case for me... Some part of me believes in numerology, at least for the part that a given name will form you as a person...

This is one of my pet peeves with neopaganism--the elements are for *balancing* you out. If you have one element that you find easier to work with, great--but don't work with it to the exclusion of others. In fact, the element that you least like working with/feel the least comfortable with is the one you need to be working with the most. For example, if you dislike working with Water, chances are very good you're probably not in touch with your emotions in a very healthy way.

The elements aren't just abstract symbols. They have a very real presence in our lives, physically and otherwise. We have Earth in our bones and teeth and flesh, Air in our lungs and in our blood and the spaces between the organs, Fire in the metabolism that burns fuel in our cells and creates heat, and Water throughout our bodies. If you have trouble getting in touch with an element, start with your body.
