View Full Version : The strangest thing...(help)

I was in the bookstore today looking in the New Age section like always. My mom had left to go sit in the car and told me to come out when I was done.
I was checking over the isle to make sure I had all of the books I wanted to purchase, and this woman came down the isle and started looking at tarot cards. She picked up a deck and said, "Wow, these look nice, but I can't even read them!" We both had a laugh while she continued to look at the cards.
When she was satisfied with what she had, she stood and started to leave, but she stopped, grabbed my arm and said,"Be careful, don't get to caught up in those spells. I mean, don't do something you're going to regret later."
I replied,"In all honesty, I don't do many spells."
"Well, that's good. But, don't do something you'll regret, you can get yourself into a lot of trouble. There are better books down that way. I can show them to you. But be careful." I nodded my head taking in all of what she told me, still a little confused as to how I got myself into this coversation with this nice lady.
She started to leave, and we both smiled at eachother as she left. My question, what does this mean? I've never done bad spells on anyone, in fact, I havn't done many spells. I was thinking of doing a spell to help stop some arguing going on at school, but nothing to hurt anyone.
Is this a message from spirit, or just a weird conversation I had with a stranger in a bookstore?

What Azul said.
I had a middle aged woman approach me like that too. But she was much less kind about it. She had been talking to a friend of mine about witchcraft (long story) and found out that I was a witch. My friend and I were walking outside a grocery store and she came right up to me with a scowl on her face and said something about how magic is dangerous and I shouldnt be worshipping anything other than God. I should listen to my friend who was "much smarter" than me because "he wasnt taking the evil path". She said she converted because her power was too strong and she knew she could abuse it. Then she adds "you must worship the creator. NOT the creation". I was about to tell her "to me they are one and the same" but she walked away. It was creepy as hell, especially since I live in such a small town.
I think in many of these cases the person had been dabbling without respect or knowledge of what they were doing and got burned. But more often its probably ego and wanting to intimidate people. Maybe it was the same for the woman you encountered.
It kind of upsets me that so many people assume if THEY get hurt from magic its because its inherently dangerous or evil, not because THEY screwed up somehow. But she could have just been passing along some friendly advice, too. Its still good to be reminded how serious the consequences can be, even if the person rudely brings it up.

She didn't seem like a rude person, but it was the strangest thing. She seemed nice enough, but it really did catch me off guard. Because, as I said before, I don't cast many spells. I havn't done one in a very long time. The last ones I did were healing spells. And a glamoury, but nothing to hurt anyone.
When she left the isle, I thought, well she must have done something and gotten herself into some kind of trouble. That was my first though, and my second though was, how would she know that I've done bad spells....because, once again, I havn't. I dunno, it's still freaky.

If she never came out and said bad spells, I would venture that she was just saying to be careful... I believe the phrase that would most aptly describe it would be "The road to hell is paved with good intentions..." It doesn't have to be a bad spell to have undesired consequences, love spells for example (to me at least) being something that can be very damaging though intentions are good.... My guess is that there was something about you that this woman saw that reminded her of herself when she was younger. And it wasn't a reprimand or meant to be insulting or freaky. The best analogy I can draw is when I remind my boys to wash behind their ears.. it doesn't really need to be said but sometimes it's good to call the basics to a concious level.. and in doing so remind myself of obvious things too...

For the record, I had a astrology book and 21st Century Wicca by Jennfier Hunter. I wasn't buying 'spell books'.
The 'better' books would have been stuff like Buddhism, and other New Age topics besides Wicca.

All of the bookstores here have the Christian section right next to or across from the New Age and Magickal Studies sections. They like to slip their books in with ours.
We've thought about doing that, but decided that it wasn't very pagan to make more work for the store employees.

How about trying some form of divination to see if this was just a kook, or a sign?

All the bookstores here (Virginia) like to keep the New Age, Magic, Buddhisim, Hindu, and Yoga books as far away as possible from the "Religious Study" books. If they dont' recgonise Wicca as a religion, thats one thing, but to not recgonise the 3000 year old religion of Buddhisim or Hinduisim?!!? I mean really! ok, I'm done ranting. :)

lol-same here....in my Half Price Bookstore I looked forever for pagan stuff under the religion section and was really annoyed they didn't have any (though at least the Buddhism and Hindu books were there)...then one day I was wandering around and found it under metaphysics. *rolls eyes* Though they actually had quite a good selection once I found it.

What part of Virginia are you from? If you'd like, you can PM, cause we might live closer to eachother than we think. The bookstore I went to was in Virginia!
The other religious books are up front closest to the check out counters. The Ghost books, astrology, Buddhism, Hinduism, tarot, crystals, and all of the other New Age topics was what she was talking about. I just don't understand how she thought I was buying spell books when I wasn't looking at spell books perse. They were wiccan books.....I dunno, it still confuses me,lol.
