I know there is other threads out there, but I searched and came back empty handed.

I was wondering about doing readings for yourself. I'm worried that my emotions will get caught up in the cards when I read for myself.

What do you think?

They will get caught up, I'm afraid. So you just have to be aware of your own prejudices when you read for yourself and try to overcome them.

I've found the best way to deal with this is to think that I'm reading for someone else. Write the reading down and come back to it later, in a few weeks and see if it makes sense. Ask others you know for help, sometimes they see what we can't.

Journal!

A great book for self-discovery and learning to be honest about yourself if Tarot Shadow Work by Jette. I'm still working on it, but it was VERY informative!

Lisa :) I keep a journal for my readings. Partly so I don't have to ask and do a reading on the same thing over and over again if something is really bugging me. Or if I do a reading for myself and don't understand it at the time, I can go back later when it does make sense. It's been as long as a month after a reading that I've gone back and refered to the reading and only then I had understanding of what the cards were pointing out to me at the time.

The great irony about tarot is that you have to do readings to learn to read, and the best subject to learn on is the ever-handy you! We all learned to read this way; I did!

The problem is that you cannot continually read for yourself and retain objectivity; you are so close to the subject (you) that you cannot exercise complete objectivity. Who among us would not want to give themselves the best possible reading or the best possible outcome? Who could 'read into' yourself better than yourself?

What a lot of us have eventually done is do readings for others, and have a trusted person to do our readings for us. I stopped reading for myself entirely except when I need an answer too quickly to find someone to do it for me. My daily reading was provided to me for years by a company in Britain; PC generated, I know, but it hit home more than missed. By taking it out of my hands I was able to see it more clearly.

Tarot Bear - I agree. I've been thinking about it today....

I was thinking that I could compare readings; what I read for myself and what another person reads for me. ( Using the same spread..?)

What do you think?

What you might do is do the spread for yourself and write it down (you should be journalling, anyway!) and record your personal interpretation. Then you can send the layout to someone and ask them for their personal interpretation...sort of what we do here on the forum, altho you can't always get a timely answer that way. This way you can compare notes.

If you were doing this exercise 'live' you could lay out the cards and the two of you sit side-by-side and do a comparitive reading.

The best advise I can give, would be to set a Teddy bear or other such item infront of you. Get a tape recorder, and "read" for/to the bear which represents you. When you are done, play back the reading! ;)

TarotBear~ I'm so bad at keeping a journal 8O I would like to compare notes however. Either get someone else's interpretation of the cards, I draw. Or maybe have them do a reading (if possible) in the same spread to see if any similar cards pop up.

Dagda Moon~Lily : That's a cute Idea, I never thought of doing that before. :T

Personally, i find that it the interpritations that get bogged in personal emotions and all.

My husband and I both read tarot so what we do is I will lay out a spread for myself.. and he'll interp. for me... and I do the same for him. It works for us... we're both known for being honest and telling it like it is yet being tactful about it. so I know he'll tell me what's REALLY there and not just what i want to hear. (i'm told that's why so many people come to us with their problems. we don't mind.. we like helping folks out)

You could try that maybe... grab a friend.. lay out your cards and have them read for you.

if you can't find anyone....mail me the spread and i'll give it a look-over for you if you like! no problem for me...:D

I have seen that your emotions do get caught up in your readings. But when I feel real emotionial I just stop and come back to it once I have gotten myself back together.

I think sending someone the spread and cards youve chosen is a an awsome idea! I would LOVE to have someone to send my cards and layouts to. It would be helpful and insightful, also greatly appreciated!

I will begin my journal soon!
