This Virus Is A Hoax : Do NOT Delete File From Your Drive

: Fw: A virus that will hit on June 1st. You can stop it today!
It was brought to my attention yesterday that a virus is in AOL
circulation via email. I looked for it and to my surprise I found it
on my computer.

Please follow the directions and remove it from yours TODAY!!!!!!!

No Virus software can detect it. It will become active on June
1, 2001. might be too late by then. It wipes out all files and folders on the hard drive.

This virus travels thru E-mail and migrates to the
'C:\windows\command'
folder. To find it and get rid of it off of your computer, do
the following.

Go to the "START" button.

Go to "FIND" or "SEARCH" (ZOEKEN)

Go to "FILES & FOLDERS" (BESTANDEN)

Make sure the find box is searching the "C:" drive. (CHECK DE
C-DRIVE)

Type in; SULFNBK.EXE

Begin search. (ZOEKEN)

If it finds it, highlight it. (SELECTEREN, NIET OPENEN!)

Go to 'File' and delete it. (GA NAAR BESTAND en VERWIJDER HET
FILE)

Close the find Dialog box

Open the Recycle Bin (OPEN DE PRULLEMAND)

Find the file and delete it from the Recycle bin (LEEG DE
PRULLENMAND)

You should be safe.

The bad part is: You need to contact everyone you have sent ANY
E-mail to in the past few months. Many major companies have found
this virus on their computers. Please help your friends !!!!!!!!

DO NOT RELY ON YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE. McAFEE and NORTON
CANNOT
DETECT IT BECAUSE IT DOES NOT BECOME A VIRUS UNTIL JUNE 1ST.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT OPEN THE FILE!!!

Didn't mean to be an alarmist :) but would dislike very much for any in our commmunity to have a 'puter infection!
thanks for the replies and below is some damage control:

McAfee AVERT Labs would like to inform you of a new email HOAX.

This email message is just a HOAX. Although, the SULFNBK.EXE file may become infected by a number of valid viruses (most commonly W32/Magistr@MM, the details of this HOAX message are not based on actual events.

We are advising users who receive the email to delete the message and DO NOT pass it on as this is how an email HOAX propagates.

In the event that the SULFNBK.EXE file was deleted erroneously, the following method may be used to restore the file from backup:
-- Windows 98 Instructions --

1) Click START - RUN, type SFC and hit ENTER
2) In the "Specify the system file you would like to restore" field, type C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SULFNBK.EXE and hit ENTER
3) In the RESTORE FROM field, type in the path to your WINDOWS CAB files
(ie. C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS)
(ie. D:\WIN98 where D is the drive letter assigned to your CD-ROM)
4) Click OK and continue with the restore function

-- End Windows 98 Instructions --

-- Windows ME Instructions --

1) Click START - RUN, type MSCONFIG and hit ENTER
2) Click the Extract Files button
3) In the "Specify the system file you would like to restore" field, type C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SULFNBK.EXE and hit ENTER
4) In the RESTORE FROM field, type in the path to your WINDOWS CAB files
(ie. C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL)
5) Click OK and continue with the restore function

Don't Delete Any Files! My office computer geek, oops I mean office computer guy said that the email was a Hoax. They alerted all our offices across the U.S. not to delete. I received an email from AOL yesterday morning to my home email from an E-Witch Auction seller I deal with on a regular basis. She said that there is a virus called SULFNK.EXE that should be deleted off the computer. Well, apparently SULFNK.EXE is a necessary file in order to run microsoft applcations. Thank the goddess I did not delete it otherwise I would have completely destroyed my hard drive. Ugh! :)

and just think, somewhere some nasty little snot is munching twinkies, drinking stale coffee and giggling over the panic he started. let's all pray for the rule of threes to take charge.

I used to work for an ISP, and one bit of knowledge I took away with me was this:

Unless you hear it from your ISP, then it most likely is a hoax. All viri are checked/researched by your ISP, and if there is cause for concern, they will send out an email to all their customers.

I told my mom to stop FWD'ng virus alerts ~ they take up time and space and bug me. After I told her why ~ she told her friends, too. I was able to stop at least 100 people (that I know of) from wasting not only their time, but mine too.

good move mairwen, i'm coming to the point of blocking a friend's incoming e-mails because she forwards every sad little chain letter that says "forward this to everybody you ever had contact with" and she doesn't even try to hide the contact list. if i were up to no good i'd have a hell of a list to work with by now and i wonder where my name is going on her e-mails. by the way, all chain letters stop at me. i never forward them.
