My main concerns:
What IS automatic writing, is it safe, and how is it done?

One source says you just sit there watching tv or reading with a pencil in your hand over a blank piece of paper and you just let "whatever" write using your hand.

Another source says you shouldn't do this at all because you never know what kind of "spirit" you might allow into your home.

So.. what's the scoop?

Automatic writing is when you allow a spirit or whatever the use of your hand to write messages. At least that is my understanding. My other understanding is that it can be dangerous, in that you never know what kind of thing is taking over your arm, and in some cases your whole body.

Hope this helps some. My little sister does automatic writing..it's neat stuff to watch :) But she says it's very scary.

my take on it - some of my best writing has been half "automatic" - in other words, I do think I let the Divine in to inspire me.

I'm told I'd probably be a great channeler of spirits too, but when it comes to automatic writing I'm letting the Goddess through, not ghosts :) That's why it's safe. To me it can be like any other form of divination, just using a pencil and paper rather than cards or stones.

To my understanding, automatic writing is also a way to tap into the unconcious. Come to think of it, I believe I have a site bookmarked on the subject.

I keep forgetting that those are there! I'm not used to scrolling down to look for stuff just yet. Yep, it's included. I did notice on another thread that one or two threads that I knew existed were not included.

Currently, I'm working on getting myself in gear to write professionally. I was given a copy of the audiobook "Writing Down The Bones" by Natalie Goldberg and it's been very inspiring. I've already written an entire draft of an article that I intend to submit. Ms. Goldberg is a professiional writer and novelist who also teaches writing workshops and her instructioin is to "Just Write - don't cross out, use punctuation, worry about grammar, etc." It seems that this could also be a very simple way to initiate automatic writing. I've been surprised at some of the things that have come to me in the process.

My cousins had a shared experiance with Automatic writing when they were in school. They're sisters and
one was in a class where she had to stand up and give a book report. Her sister was in another class
somewhere else in the school. She said she felt very tired like she wanted to go to sleep but also felt
like she HAD to write "something". When she came out of it she had written the speach that covered
the book report her sister was giving at that same time in another part of the school. She swears to this
day that she had no idea her sis was even to give a book report much less what it would be about.

Goes under the "odd but true" category. :-)
