View Full Version : A Subtle Kitchen Altar to the Morrigan?

So while I realize she's not the most traditional patron goddess for a kitchen witch, the Morrigan is mine.
Lately I've really felt like I'd like to set up an altar in the kitchen. It's a strong feeling that I usually associate with something that the goddess and spirits want me to do.
I need to be able to set it up in such a way that it is not obvious what it is. Or that it would be easy to put away the "obvious" things when family comes to visit. Any suggestions?

lots of knives. hanging on the wall or in a rack.
images of Ravens or a wall mount of ravens. or you could be creative if you can't find a raven .find a dove or some other wal hanging and paint the bird black. paint the area
also red curtains or red altar cloth.
also try getting some sort of mini fountain in there.

I had this nice reply then MW went down.... hrm.
Do you want to spread her presence around the room or give her her own space? Non traditional things call for non-traditional methods. Consider what represents her, things like: Red and Black, the crow, the wolf, and the cow. You could do something as simple as a red and black dream catcher with wolf teeth, cow hide, and crow feathers. Or should you wish, go with something more direct. Keep in mind that, like Lightdragon's suggestions, things like a dream catcher or similar would appear to others as mere decoration... only you would know that it has a deeper meaning.

Yeah except around my place even dreamcatchers are "bad". Might just say screw it and make one to hang up anyways.
What I want is like a spot in my kitchen that will serve as a visual reminder both of the Morrigan and of my desire (goal?) as a hedgewitch to work magic in every domestic thing I do.

How about a candle, red or perhaps black, with stones and/or herbs associated with her? You could always add other trinkets, a feather, perhaps a statuette or something then remove them for company just leaving a lovely decorative candle.

Oh that's a good idea.
Now I'm struck with the thought that it might be offensive to the Morrigan to take down her altar when people come visit :\

When I had a kitchen altar I kept it on a shelf sort of out of sight but still visible. I made it as "normal" looking as possible as not to draw attention but set apart enough as to it's purpose being evident to me.

It was on a shelf sort of to the side of some other things. As you can see I kept my wedding ring and other ring that is important to me on it while I did dishes and such. Each thing I put on it had a meaning. The carved box in the back has a camal and a desert scene on it which is important to me because of my heritage. Red, for me, is the color that represents the female energies and as this was an altar for Great Mother I used a red candle holder as well as a plant. Etc etc.
I hope that is a helpful visual vs. just a blah blah blah, me me me, response. :/

No that was great thank you! I never thought of including the altar alongside other kitchen decorating stuff. That's a fantastic idea :D

If there's room for another cabinet on the wall, you could get a small one and keep it open most of the time and just shut the door when people you don't want messing with it are around. We've got an armour in the living room for the Morrigan. Even have little tea-lite holders scremed into the doors so, when we open it, it's not just a door, but more of the altar. Plus you wouldn't be taking it down when people show up. Of course we have several others around(don't ask me why. I guess because we only recently got the armour.) that are more subtle. Like statues of things she likes on the shelf next to a tea-lite holder so it just kinda looks like interesting choices of decor rather than an altar. Pretty much all my altars are in the kitchen...We don't have to worry about others, though. Kinda like Maggie-in-the-Mead's idea. I liked that candle holder idea. I've been wanting to have something ont he counters that was related to my spirituality.... My husband's favorite approach to descreet altars is to put shiny things and instruments around the altar so people forget it's even there in their excitement over a drum or whatever.
