Ok, just to see who else is as stubborn as my hubby..give me a show of hands for those of you who have yet to file your income taxes..that are due by midnight tomorrow. We, of course, will be making the annual midnight dash to the post office to participate in our favorite holiday parade of frenzied, angry taxpayers..honking at all the protesters and giving them thumbsup!

I hate it, but alas, my husband is stubborn to the core about not paying until the last second. Yup, waiting till the last minute and stressing in the final preparations surely showed them!!

Yup, haven't filed mine yet. I just got the copies made; and I owe quite a bit this year (about $3500 total, state and Fed) and they'll get it when I decide I want to go to the Post office. I always file late (except when they owe ME lots of money). It really burns my butt when I work hard and they take so much every paycheck and then they STILL take more.... :scream:

Uncle Sam helped prepare my return and E-filed it for me. :p I got my refund about a month later.

Yeah we seem to get a small return one year and then owe a lot the next year..then by the time we roll around to getting a small return..we still owe them from the previous year!!

But this year there is a new baby and a new house..maybe we will hit the bigtime..or enough to cover last years debt anyway!

I did mine in the middle of February using H & R Block online. I had both refunds in my account within 10 days. I've been a part of the midnight post office rush too many times, so this was a nice change of pace. :D

I used to wait until the last minute, then I had to scramble to get copies of one form or another that my house had eaten. Then I'd get a 'No, you can not claim this/Can't you add, subtract, read? (You idiot)' letter almost every year from the IRS because I had misinterpreted or hadn't understood some weird new clause or screwed up the math.
Now, as soon as I receive all the needed paperwork, I go off to the tax place. Someone else worries about the changes in the laws & forms, e-files the results, & the returns are direct-deposited within two weeks. It's worth the money not to have that headache myself.

Did mine on Saturday, and stood in line forever to mail them this morning (I'm one of those who always sends them return receipt requested).
I should get about 200 dollars back, though, which will really be helpful with the move.

My mom had mine done at H&R Block with hers a few months ago. Yay returns! (heh, I got back less than $100...but it's something!)

usually I get back some from both state & federal but this year since I now live in one state & work in another I'm still getting a bit from fed (about 700.00) and I get $54.00 from the state I work in and I owe $94 to the state I live in.....it sucks having to file this way. And since I have this new way to file I went to an accountant who's bill was thankfully only $50 (I use to just do my own taxes filing ez form...... not anymore)

The Lovely Wife and I did our taxes on Saturday. We withhold as much as possible from our paychecks throughout the year so we get a better return at the end, but with the new tax laws from our current administration, we only got a QUARTER of the $$$ we got compared to last year's return. Guess you gotta be rich to cash in on those "tax cuts" the president's been talkin' about since he lost the popular vote and became president back in 2000, eh?

Nah, I ain't bitter.

Peace, Love and Happiness to everyone on MW tonight. My heart goes out to all our fellow taxpayers. Isn't this just the sort of thing that started a little tea party in Boston a little over 200 years ago...?
(Just kidding, big brother. I know you're watching.)

My refund was smaller, too. . . but then, I made more money last year, and the amount of taxes I paid was larger, too. **Shrugs** It all works out, maybe. :p

What I don't get is, why does the Federal government bother taxing its own employees' wages?

The short answer is: They're weenies.

My Wife and I make plenty to pay our bills and feed ourselves and our little dog, too, and that's what's important to us. I get that we'll never be rich, and I'm totally fine with that. Otherwise I would've never chosen a career in graphic design (d'oh!!!). I just wish the Powers That Be wouldn't squeeze so hard on the little folks.

Clinton might have lied. And cheated. And embezzled. And adultered. And bamboozled. And inhaled... but at least I didn't get skewered on my taxes. 'Nuff said.

Have a great night, folks. I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your waitress.

Peace, love and pie to everyone on MW. 'Cause you GOTTA love PIE!

I always owe. I don't believe in lending them my money. Nor is it a good savings program. I pay some, but always try to owe them rather than getting refunds. So far I haven't ever been disapointed either. I mailed mine yesterday evening. I hate the lines and stuff so I mail a bit early, but they don't get it until the last moment. And yeah, I do my own taxes...even on the long forms.

I did the taxes myself, as usual. I'd like to take this opportunity to say "Tax cut? What tax cut???" We never had to pay until they "cut" taxes! Ever. So they don't get it until the last day, and sometimes the last minute. On principle.

Two years ago, hubby retired. That year, we paid $604 and got $600 back in the so-called tax rebate. The next year, we paid $1,000, and that really hurt. You know, twice as much husband, half as much money. This year, we got $600 back from the Feds, but had to pay the state.

Frankly, I think a blind monkey throws darts at a dartboard to determine how much tax you owe.

Okay, I feel better now.

Actually, this tax time was easy for me. This was our (me & hubby) first year doing taxes as a married couple, so we went down to H&R Block to have them sort it out for us. :D

It worked out okay. When we were single, I usually got a fair chunk back and he usually owed. Now that we're married, we got back less than I would by myself, but at least we didn't owe anything.

*********

This seems like a good opportunity to share my favorite Tax Day story...

Several years ago, I worked at a copy shop. (I won't say who, but their name puts one in mind of clowns... :p ) Of course tax time was always a very busy time of year, a bit like Christmas season at Toys R Us. People making copies of all their receipts, using the mail box, and of course getting tax forms because we usually had some of the most frequently used ones available.

Well, one year, we had Form OMG, but not Form WTH (the names of tax forms have been changed to protect the innocent - lazy really, I don't remember...), I don't know why we only had one, nobody consulted me, I was a mere copy-jockey. I don't even recall how many times I had to explain that to irate customers who wanted to one-stop-shop.

So around nine p.m. on the fourteenth, a man came up to my station and asked about tax forms. I explained that we had one and not the other, and no, there wasn't anything that I, personally, could do about it.

Do you know what this man said to me? This man who was looking for tax forms, at nine o'clock at night, on the night before Tax Day?!?

He said "Well, you guys should be more prepared!"

Somehow I managed to keep a straight face until he left...

...though it was tempting to thank him for the best laugh I'd had all that week.
