The New Jersey state bird according to many residents is the mosquito! Yuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But to kill them all I don't know. Is there a reason they are here do they serve a purpose?

critters that carry disease should be eradicated ...

well.. i hate them and i'm allergic to them.. but as long as they don't bother me i feel no need to kill them.. but i am all for killing NJ ones.. because they're twice as evil as normal (although not as bad as some other foriegn breeds...), and well... i hate swelling up and itching and oozing... *cringes*

nature isn't that grand sometimes.. but i suppose everything serves it's purpose.. i just wish nature's purposes didn't involve me itching like a dirty bandit.

If there is a bug that bites in 100 miles it will find me!!
I guess it is from the pale skin or the red in my hair or something but I too swell up and itch and get cranky!!

Nothing worse than a cranky red head!!

oh and New Mexico has a whole new experience in bugs for me BIG ONES!!!

I've heard, at least in my neck of the woods, that we are going to have a record year for flying insects. I love Mother Nature but flying bugs give me the willies. I can't say kill them all either. I don't think they are that bad unless they are carrying diseases. I'm also one of those people that mosquitos aren't attracted to but unfortunately my kids aren't.

As a NJ Mosquito hater I proabably should have voted to kill em all. but then we would proabably end up with some death-resistant super mosquito here. Oh, yeah, we already have 'em

LOL!

Chris, gets big welts from the d*** mosquitos

I'm sure they are here for some kind of weird purpose. But let me tell you, I can't go outside in the evening without a ton of bug repellant on. I'm sure all the chemicals in that stuff is worse for you than the actual bug bite.

Well, in NJ and NY people and animals have been dying and getting sick from the West Nile Virus, which is transmitted by mosquitos and the like... Personally, I think that parasites, bloodsuckers, bacteria and viruses are here for population control, but that's just me...

Eating garlic keeps them away and you don’t get bite I noticed along with eating other certain herbs externally or externally they will stay away.

I voted leave them be. I'm from Jersey and am currently covered with HUGE welts from these said mosquitos. Yes, they tick me off, but they are a great meal for other animals, who am I to deny anyone of food. And, I beg to differ, I always thought that the NJ state bird was located between the pointer and ring fingers?!

lol ladyautumncat :D

anyway... I hate those as well, but if you remove a living thing from an ecosystem you'll probably destroy others... even their unique buzzing makes me mad, I have welts as well all over.. we must be sweet :-D

but the thing is.... mosquitos can never be extinct... there's just too many of them, they've been around for billions of years.... so there's no trouble in killing the ones you see before they stick their noses where it most certainly doesn't belong.....

I actually I'm undecided (so can't vote on this poll)

I know there are here for a reason (probably more than just their larvae being food for aquatic beings) and part of their invasion is caused by humans invading their homes.

So then it also comes down to have we killed anything tht would have controlled their population in the first place and thus already disrupted the ecosystem (like we have in so many other areas).

I vote I know to little to make an informed choice

YES!!! I am the first to ever get bitten by a mosquito when outside, I attract all kinds of bloodsucking bugs and they LOVE me to death while I HATE THEM and wish they'd die!!

MM ~ They have their place in Nature. In Nature, nothing is allowed to overrun, it's okay to slap a mosquito on your arm or exterminate bedbugs and the like if they invade your home. Just don't try to kill them ALL,everywhare, that's wack, too.

Haven't looked all the way through yet to see if anyone has mentioned this but for mosquitoes try Skin So Soft by Avon. It's a moisturizer and helps to keep the mosquitoes away. Doesn't work 100% but it helps some for me (I'm one of those covered in about 30 bites cause my favorite time to be outside is when mosquitoes are afoot). Mosquitoes were worse in Japan then they were in PA (and NJ).

I think if we could inject some antidote into mosquitos, it would spread and stuff, could become true sometime. Like a vaccine that fights against everything, and the mosquitos give it to you. In twenty years, their will be "Axe: Mosquito" to attract Mosquitos!

I don't really care. I mean if one comes and is pestering me or trying to drink my blood I'll kill it. But I'm not on some hunt to rid the world of them.

I can't stand them. OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!

I went to an outdoor party on Saturday and even though we had the DeepWoods Off, I only sprayed it on the exposed parts and they bit me thru my pants. I'm tore up from the floor up....

MM ~ I've been bitten so much, I'm immune. They don't even raise a bump. They are annoying, yes, but so are my neighbors and a few people at work and I can't kill them. Stay by the fan, it blows 'em away...I do worry about the dogs getting heartworm, though. Now, the ANTS, the ANTS are another story. I can't build any immunity to them. The ones we have look like little sugar ants but they've bred with fire ants or something, they're MEAN...it would be very nice if they would start going after the Texas cockroaches, you know, the three-inch long kind who know how to fly...BB, Stella

My rule: something or someone violates my body, and I don't approve of it, it dies. I don't care how big it is. I will go so far as taking measures to not provide breeding places for little bastards like mosquitos to breed, but they do have their place in the ecosystem so I'm not about to support a mass extinction of any species.

I really, really don't like bugs being in my house or biting me while I'm outside, but I think we'd do more harm than good to totally get rid of any species.I wouldn't be suprised if what we are doing to Nature is making the mosquito problem worse...less enviroment for birds and lizards and such that each flies, the more flies there will be.

MM ~ :yourock: Just because something is inconvenient to us, doesn't mean it has no place. There are still people who are inconvienenced by wolves and coyotes, who would wipe them out. Thankfully, some people are catching on and working hard to try to save them. Of course we have a long way to go. But just because a bug doesn't have the beauty and the heart of a wolf, doesn't mean that it has no right to exist. BB, Stella

I say leave them be. They're part of the food chain and provide nutrients for other creatures. If they were all wiped out at once, it's very possible that a lot of damage would be done.

:D I'm a geek!

I originally voted "don't care" but I think, on further consideration, ie: the amount of mosquitos I have killed in the past hour that have had my blood in them, that I would like to change my vote to "kill 'em all!"

Or at least, all the ones that try drinking my blood.

Incendia
June 22nd, 2005, 11:55 PM
Black flies and mosquitos bother me the most...so I voted "kill 'em". I know they're an important part of the ecosystem, but too bad we can't bioengineer a replacement mosquito that has an aversion to human blood. Then again...that'd probably get screwed up somehow. :hmmmmm:

I'm not really bothered by blood-suckers, but I think that there's so much garlic in my veins that they generally don't bother me.

DarkDancer

I'm sure something eats them, and the males are polinators of plants. Only the females are the blood suckers (I could make some allusions here, but I will refrain... :veryweird )

hm.. strange.. mosquitoes seem to be the only blood sucker interested in me but they don't like me at all when I eat garlic...? maybe it just works for me??

I know one time by chance when I didn't have any bug spray I for some reason thought to rub these herbal plants on me and they stopped biting??? also have read about certain plants taken internally or externally that they don't like ..

:yourock: Save the mosquitoes !

LOL kind of sounds funny but I'm sure it would be serous indeed if mosquitoes were to be in threat of extinction by some man made disease or virus like HIV/AIDS for mosquitoes or some mass mosquitoes killing method to bring down the mosquitoes population.

Yeah you know out of all the big bad animals in the world VERY few people die by them. It’s the little bugs like mosquitoes flies and such that spread parasitical worms that can get in the brain cause mental dysfunction disease etc etc that are not even addressed by the medical establishment that is responsible for more harm then anything else. Beware of the germs. Fight them with good health and hygiene!

there is NATURAL pest control using nature and to some degree I think that is ok ,but creating disease and viruses to spread into the world is dangerous and shortsighted and the government has already created talking out of context a disease for misquotes they don't think about how it might affect or maybe spread into other species and where it might lead!!!

Hm.. Makes me wonder why they attack some people more then others… some suggest vitamin b deficiency and by taking b complex you will keep them away. Some suggest to much refined sugar attracts them… In nature the more weak it‘s immune system is the more predators of all kinds attack it. Below I found some interesting sites on herbals repellents and health in relation to mosquitoes.. I will have to field test them and report back.

This has been noted by many raw fooders who are 95-100% raw.
