I had braces when I was a kid!!! I may be old (but not grey ;) ) but I still remember the pain!!!!!
Abesol is what helped me. It should go away soon. The pain that is.

Herowin always works for me... ;)

March... that would typically be spelled Heroin... and it is used for pain control for terminal patients. China white is good too. However, Tylenol is cheaper and not nearly as addictive.
Edited to remove really sarcastic impulse.

I loved my braces! Yes there were times when they were uncomfortable, but they were well worth it! Just bide your time, it will be over soon.

Poor Tellin. I was supposed to get braces many many many many... well... a lot of years ago. I never wanted them and now I regret that I didn't get them and it looks like I'll have to wait till I can save up for them. But who wants to see a late 20s person with braces?! oh well... at least when it's over they'll look better.

when i was little i really wanted braces until my friend got them.....and now i know better. She even had these weird elastic bands to attach from her lower teeth to her upper teeth. Everytime she opened her mouth...the bands clamped it shut again. Personally i think that was just a ploy by her parents to stop her talking so much......well it worked!

I had braces too; back then if you had really strong teeth you had to have the metal train track things that they didn't glue on, they were actually bands that went around your teeth. I know how painful it can be Tellin, but you'll get used to having them in your mouth and it should only be painful the first couple of days after they tighten them. Somehow I don't think I'm making you feel any better... sorry! But just think about that million dollar smile when they're finally taken off!!! :D

I knew a fifty two year old woman who had braces :) She wasn't too excited about them either, but...after a while, she definitely got used to them, and was happy she went and did it.
You'll be pleased with the results...but...i'll send you some extra energy for the pain.

Kaya - they now have those clear plastic things that go over your teeth, if you're still thinking about it. There are so many more options now then there were when I was a kid. If I had to do it again now at my age I'd seriously look into those plastic ones.
Then again, if you'd seen the horsemouth I had before the braces, you'd understand. :D

Clear plastic things? Over your teeth? I'm seriously going to have to look into this. I do vaguely remember my orthodontist telling me about ones that go behind your teeth (which were too expensive to think about at the time), but I don't remember any clear plastic things....
Oh, you should see my teeth now. I had one little girl at Amber's daycare centre ask me why my teeth are like this. I look like a blasted Vampire. What's your two front teeth called? Well anyway, the teeth on each side of my front teeth have been pushed out at an angle. I got's too many teeth up top... :: sighs ::

The clear plastic things over the teeth are new. I wish they'd had those when I had braces in my 30's. They seem a lot better than the things that go behind your teeth. I had "lingual buttons", which were metal bumps on the bands around my farthest back molars, and they stuck into the back of my tongue. When they first put those on, I spent about 3 days gagging all the time because they were so irritating. I almost told them to take them all off and forget it. Sorry if it's gross, but avoid those if you can.
Actually, I think braces were invented during the Spanish Inquisition. (kidding). Maybe it was my orthodontist. That guy enjoyed twisting those wires way too much. It was no fun, but I'm not sorry I did it now that it's over. The worst is getting used to them in the very beginning.

*groans in memory* That is what I had- they had to put them on with a hammer and chisel type thing.
My advice to you is for when you get them off. However irritating a retainer is...WEAR IT!. I didn't, and my teeth are crooked now. 5 years of braces down the drain. I asked the dentist a few years ago if there was some sort of retainer I could wear now, but he said the only thing that would straighten them out would be more braces. And that is too much money for me, I am saving up for my son who needs them next year :wah:

We went through the whole braces routine...my two oldest daughters and myself.
Here's something to consider...
they sell liquid Don Quai and Mullen at the health food store...both pain relievers.
I made a mixture with these and some hot water...and had my girls rinse with the stuff...every so often to relieve the pain. That and some tylenol and they were much better afterwards.
And while a lot of herbal remedies taste terrible...this mixture ends up tasting like celery LOL...so its not so bad.
Give that a try (if you can get to health food store) and see if that doesnt bring your mouth some comfort. I hope it helps you like it did for my girls.
ouch...indeed.... the girls used to cry after an adjustment at the Orthodonist...so I know how bad that can hurt.
Hope you feel much better SOON!

I think they're called InvisAlign. something to that effect. They're molded plastic that fit on your teeth and you graduate into stages wearing a different piece as your teeth move. I had the same problem with my canines too! they were climbed up on top of the others and forced my lips out; basically my teeth were too big for my jaw and they removed 5 (oh, and I was 11 at the time!) so they could make room for the braces and the teeth when they shifted. They fit perfect now, and I just had my 4 wisdom teeth taken out 2 years ago cuz they were pushing on my others!! Like Tellin said in the beginning.... ACK!!!

I had braces for 4 years and I had to wear a mouth gear (for correcting a bad over bite). Normally people wear the mouth gear for about a year, but because my parents mae me wear it 24 hours a day, even at school (oh the teasing!), I only had to wear mine for 6 months.
Anyway, back to the braces....after you've had them for a while, you can eat ice cream and that really helped me with any pain. I remember that my orthodontist gave me soft wax to put on any pokey parts...do you have any of that?

I had that wax too Amethyst; I saw fairly recently that now you can get it in pharmacies! I used up a LOT of that wax back then.

you could use whole cloves to numb the pain. they are natural novicain (yeah I can't spell that today). And they aren't addicxting =D. LoL (((Big Sympathy Hug))) I don't have braces...yet. But I might need them because I need some teeth turned. (OWW!)

I remember that pain! The first time I bit into a sandwich after they installed the wire. I thought it was easy because compared to putting brackets on getting the wire had been easy...Then I went to lunch, and that bit into that sandwich OUCH Ibuprofen should probably help with the pain until it goes away. I had bands around the back teeth, the back molars to be exact, and then wires through the brackets on the front teeth. It did a pretty good job. I have seen adults with braces and it's not really big deal. Its better for your teeth to be straight, because then it's easier to floss them and keep them clean, and you will have fewer problems with them.
