View Full Version : Is it right to clone people?

I do not believe in cloning.
For example, if they made a clone from my DNA, it would look
like me, but it would not be me.
It would not have the memories that I do, of the last half of
the 20th century, or of my personal experiences.
It would have only memories, experiences of the 21st century,
it's personality would be different from mine, etc.
To believe what you see is to be deceived.

I don't know why human cloning is even a consideration. I mean, even though looks will be identical, it'll still be a completely different person with a different personality. And imagine how amazingly horrific life would be for that person, being a clone. And I see no purpose, unless they want to use the extras for donors, which is just sick. It's like breeding extra sheep for slaughter.
I just remembered a Sliders episode where they slid to a world full of clones for just that purpose. The clones, if they weren
t killed and escaped, lived out their lives all cut up and incomplete. It was sickening and scary.
I'm still sorting my feelings about animal clonings.

In my opinion, no, cloning is not right.
I mean, we already have too many people in the world as it is. Why do we need to make copies. Just more resourses going to waste.

I feel that if I were given the chance to have a clone and raise it from infancy I would do it in a heartbeat. I have always wanted a child and would do anything to get one!! To me this would be great and noone could ever say that it wasn't mine

I would agree with cloning if they could figure out how to clone just organs that are needed for transplants and such. Not a whole person. That would be quite ingenious.

heard a joke once that the punchline was "a strolling clone gathers no floss". darned if i can remember the joke!

they can just clone organs... they've been "growing" skin for years (it actually grows really fast) for burn victims and such...
hmmm... well i'm kinda at a loss... I think that cloning organs and such is great (since our anti-rejection medical knowledge is limited to pumping people full of drugs which make them sicker), but then again i think that perhaps the reason we have so many problems is that we keep striving to save everyone who gets sick. Now... i don't want to die.. or want people to die... but then again... if its our time.. we always fight and hold on and get put on life support for months... and perhaps... all this effort to stay alive for longer is simply not the answer... but anyways i'm bridging into sensitive territory.
as far as cloning people.. you can't clone personality... and although a clone would be an identical twin... you didn't share the same energy in the womb so you won't feel the twin connection and it will simply be someone running around who looks like you (20 years or more younger most likely, since i doubt people will get their kids cloned, unless it becomes mainstream), since they aren't you. It doesn't bother me so much as I baffles me as to why people would do this kind of thing... i mean... how desperate are people to have their DNA running around.. and we still dont' know what the reprocussions are of those said "clones" reproducing would be. I personally think that gov. is just learning this cloning stuff so that they can breed super soldiers...

lol...I don't think I even have to hear the joke, the punchline is funny without it!
As for my opinion on cloning, I agree with each and every one of you in some approximation...each argument has its good points and bad points, both for and against. It's such a volatile subject these days (especially in the wake of Dolly the sheep), that I think a HECK of a lot more research is going to have to go into cloning ANYTHING other than animals or much-needed organs for people. It's like the invention of the computer...eventually the computer is going to take over human jobs...cloning could potentially eliminate the need for sex (PERISH THE THOUGHT!!! )...course I could just be babbling...I do that when I'm tired ;)

i suppose that part of the very unlikely but possible outcome of all our genetic research and cloning madness may possibly be to start gentically screening and making "perfect" babies... which would eventually allow people to only have sex for pleasure, and if they wanted a child, they would go to a specialist and have the child constructed genetically from their DNA so they would have no genetic weaknesses (like asthma, or diabeties, or cancer genes). If you haven't seen gattica... i recommend watching it... it's an interesting twist on a future where only the geneitcally superior ever achieve anything...

I've seen Gattica....the whole idea scares the s**t out of me! The scariest thing about it all is that he was facing certain death if he was ever caught! I couldn't imagine living like that....EVER!

I think almost anything has it's use if given time and circumstance. But then again the thought of something like Gattaca is scary as hell. So I guess I'm divided on it. I think that it shouldn't be outlawed because there might be a need or use somehow for it, but should be very strictly regulated, so as to practically be outlawed until said need arrives.
