View Full Version : Help for hair to grow longer?

I wasn't sure whether I should ask for practical advice, herbal advice, magical advice. . . :)
I'd like to get my hair to grow longer. But it hasn't seemed to really want to (either that or it's growing really slowly!). It's about two inches above my waist, and seems content to stay there. I'm not! *chuckles* I'm probably going to get it trimmed soon. But I was wondering, are there any ideas on how to get hair to grow faster/longer/healthier/etc?
I heard once about a superstition that you need to cut your hair on a certain day of the month to get it to grow longer- what day? If that's true, at least. *smiles*
Any ideas are appreciated! (and sorry if this isn't the appropriate forum- I really didn't know which to post in!)

Well... I don't know how much help I can offer on this..
If you get your hair trimmed on a regular basis, around every 6 weeks. It helps to cut down on split ends, looks healthier, and helps it to grow. Thats what I do and a few others I know. It usually helps. :)

Umm, sorry. Trimming your hair does not make it grow faster--plain and simple. One has nothing to do with the other. Puma, I have two suggestions--1) Increase your protein. People will tell you that you can't make your hair grow faster, but since I have been on the Protein Power diet, my hair is growing so fast I can't keep up with it. I have to trim my bangs once a week, sometimes more. It's strange. Everyone I know has commented on it. For a long time it seemed like it wouldn't grow at all. *shrug*. 2) I have a spell that I used to use. If you want it, feel free to pm me. :)

Trimming your hair doesn't make it grow faster but it does keep your hair healthier. Especially if you blow dry your hair often or bleach or colour your hair. Healthy hair will grow better than unhealthy hair. Brewer's yeast is a good supplement to take for healthy hair.

Trimming your hair makes it seem to grow faster.......Damaged ends break off.....making it seem your hair isn't growing. If you trim it, the ends don't break, hence it grows longer......:D

Healthy, balanced diet. Proper amounts of calcium, protein, vitamin E. A friend of mine who had trouble getting her hair to grow took prenatal vitamins, which made a huge difference.
The old wives tale is that if you cut your hair in a waxing moon, it will grow quickly. Waning moon, grows slowly.

scalp massage is really good too! You need a good blood flow to the hair follicles to stimulate hair growth. Hair on average only grows about 1cm per month anyway and if it hasn't grown past your waist then it may not. (hair grows in a cycle and may reach the end growth stage when it is that particular length) hope that helps

Hm, I don't think it's strange that your hair grows longer if you're taking extra protein - isn't hair made of protein?

as a hairdresser i hope i dont get too technical....
hair is made of protein mainly soft keratin (your nails are hard keratin) so if you use products with protein in them it strengthens your hair. The only problem is that you can over do it so it strengthens the hair so much that it goes brittle and gets snap happy (also known as having a kodak moment hee hee)

ohh. . . . *nods* perhaps I should try taking vitamins. . .
Does anyone know a good shampoo to use? Or conditioner? I condition the heck out of my hair, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

When my long hair gets to a certain point, an inch above my waist it stops growing, I have had long hair for 7 years and that's just as long as it gets. When I am pregnant the replacement cycle gets faster but it gets no longer. The only thing I can add to what the others have said is take care of your hair, braid it rather than ponytail it and think twice before you color or perm it.
Although a couple times I have permed my hair because it was that or cut it off, it was bugging me so! My Perms last several years unless I get pregnant...then it wilts in 12 weeks. :T
Treat it gently is my biggest peice of advice...shampoo is pretty dependant on hair type.

My hair responds beautifully to Pantene products, and it seems to hate the Aussie brand, but I know people who swear by Aussie haircare products. Try out different brands, perhaps using the trial-size bottles, until you find something that works for you. :)

I happened to catch something in a documentary about body builders...and this guy said that because he took sooo much protein, he had to cut his hair every week and shave every two days!! (body builders aren't supposed to have body hair for when they're posing....is that right?)
also! protein is good for nails growing to! :)

ooooo....didn't see this bit till after!:p
I used loads of olive oil in my hair to get my dreadlocks out (and that took forever!) but my hair was in really good condition afterwards despite having been all tangled and abused for so long. So try Extra Virgin olive oil on clean hair damp hair and then rinse thouroughly..:)

Pregnancy always works for me. No, it's not the prenatal vitamins, but rather the hormones.

Vitamin E, too. It's really good for hair, skin and nails.

I've actually had pretty good success with this. *shrugs* But there are times when my hair grows out of control no matter what I do to it.
:D
I think it was in the Green Room where they've got Herbal recipies...and there's one for a hair treatment with olive oil and honey...it's awesome for pampering your hair.

What I know:
Protein. Lots and lots of protein. When I was on my low carb high protein diet my nail and hair grew non stop.
Also from what I hear if you trim your hair on the day of a full moon it’s supposed to help. :D You know I do it. My hair when un-bound reaches my waist.

If you belong to a gym or health club, put conditioner in your wet hair, then wrap it in a towel and go sit in the steam roon for awhile. When you're read go get in the shower and wash it out. This is great for repairing dry or damaged hair

What a great idea Azure. I had never thought about that. maybe I can get some use out of our sauna after all!! My hair is horribly dry and damaged and I don't even dry it or use any hairspray. I do use Infusium23 which helps a lot, but I think I may try the sauna trick.

There's a intensive conditioner out there called Last Call (http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/product.asp?dept%5Fid=1215&pf%5Fid=140712) it's great. It says to leave it in for 5 minutes but I leave it in about 20 and my hair comes out unbelievably soft.

Water sign new moons are the best. I've done this for many years, works for me... Had my hair to my hips this makes the 6th time in my life time.
Oh, and it's a good time to trim or file your nails for growth.
