Fair-haired female lawyers in the U.S. have declared National
Blond Day to dispel the myth of the dumb blond. They are fed
up with people ignoring their law degrees and seeing their hair
as a "stupidity signal."
The Blond Legal Defence Club has been established by a group
of lawyers in Los Angeles to support anyone who has been
"treated wrongly for their follicular appearance."
It is calling for "less prejudice towards the fair-haired and a
celebration of blond living." It hopes to banish jokes such as:
What do you do if a blond throws a pin at you? Run, she's still
holding the grenade.
The club's mission is to "stop the widespread belief that blonds
are dumb and incapable, to destroy blond stereotypes and to
publicize blond accomplishments throughout history, dispelling
the myths and mistakes about blonds."
Icons from Marilyn Monroe to Robert Redford have complained that their hair colouring has led to their work being taken less
seriously.
"We've had to endure untold hardships," said Fern Magnin, of
the Blond Club. "We're not going to stand for it anymore."
The club is calling on hairdressers to support the campaign by
offering free bottle blond makeovers. Only around 9% of
Americans are naturally fair-haired, but 70% of all hair dye sold
is blond.
National Blond Day is July 9.
