I'm a meat eater and yet I raise chickens and ducks that I dont eat or use their eggs (unless its in meatloaf). I do say a silent pray for the animal that gave its life to feed me though.

I would vote, but I don't know if I'll eat all kinds of meat forever. But for now, my mother and father make me eat read meat. I despise for the taste. Though, I love white meat with all my heart of hearts. CHICKEN! CHICKEN! CHICKEN!

Love my veggies! We eat mostly fish & chicken. We seem to be eating less meat of any kind lately. Having said that, I will still wolf down a hot dog or two once in a while. And yes, I do know what they put in them. *shudder*

Well I was a vegetarian for four years, however, my boyfriend is not, so I had to cook two meals everyday, one for him and one for myself... and that got a little tiresome... So now we are like semi-vegitarians the both of us, since I am the one that cooks at home I decide what is to be eaten and as often as possible I choose vegitarian food (incl fish and poultry). However he likes a steak every now and then so we eat sometimes.
The reason I was/am a vegetarian is merely do to the fact that I feel better, less problems with my stomache (I had sort of an ulcer once), and I rarely got ill then...
Had a kebab yesterday and today I am at home ill, however that was mostly due to the sauce and not to the actual meat soooo ... ;)

I feel all animals deserve a hunt when you want to eat them. That's why I don't eat any meat that has not been hunted after. We have our own chickens at home, which require quite some time to catch if you want to eat those, a few sheep, which I don't eat because they get butchered in a slaughterhouse, and a few geese, which are again hunted, which I do eat.
I consider fishing a type of hunt, so I eat fish, too.
Brightest Blessings!

I have always seen humans as part of the animal kingdom. And if other animals eat other animals, then it is natural for us to eat meat.

I really don't enjoy the thought of eating meat. And the more the meat looks like an animal the more it turns my stomach. For instance, I can eat a hamburger or chicken cutlet, but a whole chicken or cornish game hen (my Mother in law made them once ugh)
I would really like to be a vegetarian, but I am not so crazy about beans and veggies and would have to eat something (And Elaine, stop copying me :D :D ).
When my kids get a bit older, I will probably consider going the no red meat route. I already won't eat veal or lamb.
My son, 5 yo, has already expressed a desire to be a vegetarian. He hates eating meat because it is sad that you have to kill an animal to do so (his words). I have told him that when he is older and is almost done growing that would be great if he still wants to do it.
Let's hear it for Pop Tarts!!!

I have been a vegetarian (lacto-ovo) since i was 2 1/2 (of my own decision). I don't like a lot of the deep green veggies, and I have a pretty bad diet... but i've been drinking a lot of v8 recently.. and it's pretty tasty.
I occasionally... not so often...hardly ever.... eat fish.
I can't eat anything that is resembling of flesh... it just bugs me out.
I, however, don't see anything morally wrong with eating meat.. my hubby is definitely a meat eating person... and that's fine... as long as i don't have to eat it to *giggles*

I will not eat fish becuase I DESPISE the taste greatly. I have quit eating fish since I was five. Before then, my parents forced me to eat it. (the

I've voted vegetarian. That is because I eat no read meat. I also eat no poultry or fish. But I do eat diary products. I was veggie for about 11 years, about 8 1/2 years ago, then returned to meat eating. Recently though, the coverage of the foot and mouth problem in Britain has effected my mind set. I can no longer invest in a farming industry which is so badly run. I don't blame the farmers, more the big business behind the whole thing. So, until I see major change I think I will stick to culling the veg rather than the animals that are so poorly treated. (Hey, don't blame me - my dad made me fluffy!). :D

Rick - your post made my husband do some kind of strange clapping laughing thing... i think you did good.
and furthermore... i can understand not eating fish... the only kind of fish i can eat is the super processed fish patty type that you get in fish sticks or fish filet in the freezer section of the grocery store... or possibly one of those mc donalds mc-fish-like-substance-on-a-bun-with-tartar-sauce-and-cheese-with-fries-and-a-soda-for-about-five-bucks type of things....

I love Tabasco Sauce!!! Especially in tomato soup, on eggs, on cool ranch doritos, in minestrone soup, etc...
While I can respect the many reasons that people are vegetarian, I am definitely a carnivore. I absolutely adore red meat, especially if it's been BBQ'ed, but still red in the middle. Love a good pork roast, chicken, turkey, tried venison but so long ago I've forgotten what it tastes like. Don't like duck, too fatty. Fish is an iffy subject. I don't like most freshwater fish. I LOVE salmon and shell fish. Sushi though, that's nasty!
Longest I ever went without eating red meat was about a month and a half. Thought I was going to die!
Ironically, I used to work for a publishing company that had a vegetarian magazine among its various titles. Did not respect the editors of that mag because they were the 'holier than thou' brand of vegetarians. Vegefundies? Ended up discovering new and entertaining ways of getting under their skin, especially while in the lunch room. :bad:
Someone once told me they couldn't eat anything that had a face on it. I wonder what they would do if I put faces on all of their vegetables. :D

I LOVE meat! I love it drippy, fatty, greasy, chewy, bbq'd, broiled, marinated, shredded, boiled, baked (mmmmmm crunchy skin!), staked, fried, beaten, smoked, spiced, plain, salted,... You name it, I love it! (NO sushi! Meat is supposed to be COOKED!)

I voted "meat eater" though I probably will not always be one. I've been slowly cutting out meat and getting my protiens (sp?) from other sources. I'm doing this more for health reasons than anything else.
While I myself am in good health, I find all the steroids, anti-biotics and other chemicals that meat producers (not really farmers) feed, inject and otherwise expose their livestock to rather disturbing. Also, the conditions that giant production plants keep the animals in is hideous. Rather than feed my body this I'm working on skipping the meat.
I know that large veggie producers cover their products in chemicals and plant genetically modified nasty bits into their supply, so that's why I try and find organically grown food. I'm also a BIG fan of free range meats. (The best chicken I ever had was from a free range farm. No seasoning added, that chicken was flavourful!!)
Well, I seem to have rambled on here! Time for bed. Nighty night!

Both Sky and myself are lacto - ovo vegetarians ( Sky for 12 years, although she did eat fish for about a year to begin with, and I have been one for just over two years ). In Britian, the word vegetarian means not eating ANY type of meat ( red meat, fish and poultry, basically anything with a face on, and yes I do not like vegetable faces! ).
We are very strict in that we even avoid anything that can be derived from animals eg. gelatine, leather, wool ( only the kind that takes wool from the slaughter room floor), silk, etc.
With Sky expecting our child, most people have asked if she has been tempted to eat meat. Sky's reply, "No, this is definitely a little veggie on the way!".
I understand that a lot of veggies preach to meat eaters, saying things like "Meat is Murder", "How could you possibly eat that cute little piggy?", and other less than polite things.
I turned veggie of my own accord, Sky had nothing to do with it, and I believe that people will choose how they want to eat. If it means eating green vegetables or lentil soup for the rest of your life, so be it ( over here we have a wide? range of vegetarian meals like Linda McCartney stuff and Quorn burgers and so on). The choice is, as always, up to the individual.

Am i the only one to find this a very strange and muddled reasoning?
How is hunting an animal, literally scaring the life out of it, any better than the slaughterhouse? It's still spending the last minutes of life in terror.
Why does an animal 'deserve' a hunt before it is killed? I would have thought any animal deserves a peaceful end, with the least amount of stress as possible.
I find all forms of hunting (including fishing) totally abhorant, whether it be for food, sport or for 'the good of the countryside'.
And yes, I am veggie.

I voted vegetarian... although, I'm not really strict. I only eat chicken. No fish, cow, deer, whateva. However, I did eat pepperoni pizza, because they didn't have veggie pepperoni pizza. I agree with cryssi - if it looks like an animal, I won't eat it. It is a lot easier to eat a burger than it is to eat a thing of steak! My parents hate the whole veggie thing, though! They think I'm just a really fussy eater.

I've been vegetarian for over 20 years, I would rather die than consume the flesh of an animal. As an occultist, I would not defile my body with decaying flesh, full of the chemicals farmers pump into the beasts. Even organic meat is swimming with the adrenalin that was shooting through the creatures blood, as it died in terror. we have reached a stage in our evolution where we no longer have to kill the other creatures which share our world to survive. There is absolutely no need whatsoever for us to eat animals. It is economically, morally, spiritually and intellectually wrong. Do we not , as pagans, respect all life? Are we not equal, not superior, to other creatures? What right do we have to kill them then? I, in all honesty, could not call myself a pagan and eat meat.
Sorry if I've offended anyone, but thats what I believe.

Well said Lord.
I think that since foot & mouth, more people are becoming aware of what we are doing. Many people have told me they are now considering, or have become, vegetarian.
It's just such a tragedy that so many animals had to die to make them change their minds.

It has been suggested to me that the disease was sent to us now for precisely that reason. to make people think.
The earlier outbreak was at a time when there were few veggies around, and they were seen as real oddballs.
This time, more people will react to the message.
Not sure i believe in that theory, but if it works then maybe it wasn't a complete waste.

Because the fields have not been grazed, more grass and wildflower pollen is giving people worse hayfever, and many people are getting it for the first time.
Also, cos the countryside has been shut, the footpaths are very overgrown, which leads to people like me and some friends wading through 6ft high brambles and nettles last week - very painful!

I'm a vegan (though I drink milk). Although humanity is part of the animal kingdom, we dominate the rest of the species. We have the power to destroy almost everything. Other animals do eat others. But they are equal each having there own adaptations and surviving with them. We can kill them without any fight, we just win the battle. That I think is unfair.

If animals eat each other....? Animals eat their own droppings and eat each other's babies too, so is it ok for us to do that? Some of the animals most closely related to us, such as gorillas, are almost purely vegetarian. Chimps eat some meat, but nowhere near the amount most westerners do. Humans are not carnivores, we do not have the digestive systems of carnivores, and it is unhealthy for us to consume more than a very small amount of meat. Also, modern farming and slaughter practices are cruel to the animals who die in pain and terror, bad for the environment, and not too good for the starving people who could be fed with the grain western countires feed to cattle. Interviews with American slaughter house workers found that almost none of them even knew that America has a Humane Slaughter Act (there are no penalties for violating it...guess who has the money there). How can anyone who supports massive cruelty and environmental destruction claim to love the Earth?

Actually....our digestive system is suited to an omnivorous diet, and current research has shown that a diet too high in carbs is the cause of some adult onset diabetes via an overtaxed pancreas. Meat eater vs. vegetarian??? A personal choice for everyone to make, not a societal or envirnmental one.

Sorry Gunner, can't entirely agree with you there.
I do agree it's a personal choice, and i am not criticizing meat-eaters.
But I do think there is a valid environmental reason for not eating meat, apart from the suffering caused to the animals.
Many smaller farms are being taken over by huge companies leading to highly intensive farming. They are in it for the profit only, and many big businesses have little regard for the countryside.
There is a high usage of chemicals, hormones etc, which find their way back into the earth, upsetting the natural balance, and can easily enter watercourses.
Then there are the 'accidents' where slurry finds it way into rivers and the water tables - this is more common than you might think, environment protection officers from where i work are being called out to such pollution incidents regularly. This hazard can also affect our drinking water.
All this, plus more than i know enough about to write about, because so many animals are reared for food.

I identify as a vegetarian...I have been for about four years....sort of. See I'm only a vegetarian for about ten months out of a year (total, not in order, lol).
See, I don't believe that eating meat is imoral or wrong. It's natural and in moderation it is healthy for you....however, I don't believe in modern slaughter methods, and can't (with a clear conscience) eat meat knowing that the animal suffered through its life until its death.
There are very few places where animals are raised by the government in huge warehouses that are clean and humane. That's why I don't eat meat.
Also, I consider it sort of a religious and sacred thing...it's special. So I eat meat on special days...days of bounty and days of giving thanks. There's much more to it but...think of it like this, for me, eating meat is a ritual in itself.
When I do eat meat, it's bought from a farm directly. My father is a farmer guy, and doesn't have a problem killing a chicken or lamb or whatever. That's where our family gets its meat. It's hard for me to image...
I don't think (don't jump on me about this) that there's anything wrong with fishing or hunting if you aren't doing it for sport or pride, merely for use. If you eat it, and use it's fur or pelt or what have...and really respect the animal...then it's different than what hunting today has become in many cases.
But if you're going to hunt...don't be cruel about it...and make it as fair as possible. And, don't hunt in the same spot every time.
When you kill for your food, it gives you new respect for animals. They are not just something you bought at the store, they are a creature that lived just like you....

PS Feel free to disagree.

"I have always seen humans as part of the animal kingdom. And if other animals eat other animals, then it is natural for us to eat meat."
ah, but steven, how would you like to end up at the other end of the fork? or rather tooth, talon or claw?

i pretty well agree on everything you said.
hmm, congratulations, this is rare indeed!
the worst part is that naked chickens and naked babies look so much alike. brrrr.

The part about naked chikens and babies (shudders) disturbingly true. Glad I don't like chicken too much...
Farm grown meat smells/tastes better than store meat, it should be considered for those who haven't tried it yet...plus it hasn't lived a bad life usually (such as on Amish farms).

Well we aren't on the other end of the fork - if we were were I don't think you could convince the guy on the other end of the fork to change his mind either :p
As far as hormones in meat - buy your meat, eggs, and other products from a farm you can trust. If you have to, take a drive out to the country and buy from a local farmer who doesn't use these drugs (this is exactly what I do), or choose products in your supermarket specifically labelled to be "organically" grown or without hormones or other additives, etc.
"Animals eat their own droppings and eat each other's babies too, so is it ok for us to do that?" - why sure, if you're into that :) Let's follow the lemmings off the cliff too..? They also lick their own behinds somedays. I don't think anyone was suggesting you do anything because an animal does; just that since animals eat other animals it could be the natural order of things..
As far as "inhumane slaughtering", these myths seem to perpetuate often. My dad is a butcher and worked at a slaughterhouse for years, and my fiance and I both have a long line of relatives who farm - animals are not normally killed in some ways people would like you to believe (I especially am amused at the belief that they stick a rod up a cow's anus and electrocute it). If you're worried about that, again, find a farmer you can trust to buy from.
It's also scientifically proven that not eating meat can harm someone's health as well, especially if they don't take care of themselves properly. I respect anyone who can refrain from eating meat due to their personal choice, and I hope if you do you are very careful to take care of yourself. I also hope that anyone who does can also respect that I am an omnivore :)
P.S. Plants are living creatures too!!!

My opinion: I'm a vegetarian. I cannot bare to think of myself eating a poor animal. I LOVE animals and becoming a vegetarian was my first step to showing it. Animals go through so much cruelty to their death. They were not born for us to just eat them. We are not anymore worthy of another animal that inhabits this earth. That's my side. lol

i went vegetarian when i was 16 for about a year.. the local slaughter house workers were doing unspeakable things to the animals so alot of ppl went vegetarian around that time.. didnt know what nasty extras you were going to get with your sunday roast.. i have always eaten eggs, milk and cheese..
I dont know how vegans do it.. i would never have that kind of self control.. love my chocolate too much lol

I'm a meat eater. Always have been, always will be. There have been times where it was almost strictly chicken, but I looove a good steak. But... on principle... I can only eat certain meats... I can only eat cow, chicken, and pig. I can't bear to eat deer or lamb, barely even duck. Definately no squirrel or rabbit... I just can't do it... I won't do it... But, I do like my veggies... and as soon as I get my kitchen restocked with proper pots and pans and get the ants outta my darn kitchen... I'll be cooking again instead of living off of nuking a lean cuisine... lol And then I'll be cookin some good meats and veggies... gimme onions... gimme green peppers... gimme shrooms, shrooms, and more shrooms!!! =) hehe

i'm a vegan.
i was veg for years due to concerns about the animals and the environment. went vegan when i made the connection between veal calves and dairy, and between my pets and farm animals. it's my choice, and i'm not one to preach. (i live with the king of meat.)
but, reading through this thread from the beginning, i want to clear something up.
vegetarians do not eat meat/poultry/fish. period. and vegans don't drink milk (or use eggs, for that matter.) end of story.
man, that really bugs me. i have a lot of respect for people who are genuinely following whatever's right for them, but taking a label and twisting it is insulting to people who really dedicate themselves to their diet.
and for the record, they make non-dairy "milk" chocolate now. delish.

there's a definition floating around out there for people who only eat fish and plants: "pesco-vegetarian."
