Its up to you all. Do you want it to stay? Or do you want it to go?

Go....it would be nice if we could all "play along nicely" but I have a feeling this just leaves far too much room for hard feelings, people who may not be able to take a joke as well as others..etc.
But..while it's still been here, I've been having fun with it ;)
A thought occurred to me though....and you might want to mull this one over.... what if we erased the "negative karma" aspect, and just had "Good Karma" or "Bonus Karma" instead? I was thinking...when we see someone who is asking for energy, releasing a primal scream, ranting, or sharing something that is painful to them, we could just click on that handy dandy feature, and send them some "Bonus Karma" to brighten their day a little bit.

I don't see whats so bad about taking some negative with the positive? Well, I really like the idea of it. But, enough people were grumbling about it that I thought it should just be put up for everyone to decide.

I guess that I just figure, that people have enough negative energy in their own lives at times, that if they come here during a time when they are already having a bad day, and check their Karma to see that three people gave them negative ones that day, it might just bum them out. I know it's all a game, and all in fun. And I'm glad that you explained that in your about karma game thread. But.. I don't know. I just have this feeling it's going to cause more problems in the long run. I do think the idea is cute, and I do wish that i didn't see potential problems ahead with it, but...i just..do.... :( sorry Mol. I know you're exhausted, have been working really hard, and it must seem we're all throwing a million things at you at once. But..there's been alot for US to absorb, and react to with all these changes, too ;) Hang in there, we'll all figure things out as we go along. I just hope for the best resolution to this little question :)

Its all good! http://mysticwicks.com/images/smilies2/areindeer.gif I don't mind if it gets voted out. I gave the poll a week and I will probably send out a mailing about it, since it sounds important enough that everyone should be allowed join in if the want.

someday's--like tonight--i just cruised in here with nada in particular on my mind; nothing to really post; "kickin' back" & having fun, so, in this state of mind, sure, it's "cool . . ."
most (other) times, however, i don't really wanna "mess around," and--believe it or don't!--i'm consintrating on my next, mamooth and earth-shattering post! so, then, no; i wouldn't really care to "mess-around," too much!
but: utimately i vote:
YES! keep the Karma.yes yes yes . . .

From the whispers I've heard, the people who want it to go are a)worried that they are going to get lots of negatives or b)have already got some. (No offense intended) My point is that it's way too early to claim it's a bad thing. How do we know when it's only been going on for two days? My vote was to keep it, but we need to clearly define what "abuse" of the system is. If it gets out of hand, it can always be dealt with later. But how many times have you read a post and thought "Yes!!!" but it was too strange or timeconsuming to post an agreement or pm? -OR- how many times has a post just really turned your stomach and you can't really say so? I don't know, it *could* go bad, but I think it has the potential to be a really really good thing too. :) Things like this are whatever you make of it. Isn't that the whole point?

I see where you're coming from, Danus. I rather like the idea of positive (I mean, I've already got a neg, but I don't mind as much because the person was just trying out the system)
But that's how people are going to abuse the system. :geez: Though, I've seen on other sites where they just have postive and they work out fine. ( :) )

I think we should keep the caramel system...
providing, that is, that I don't put my mouse over a little red icon next to my posts and see a mouseover that says "AmbivalentMirage is on such a wretched path that hell (all circles) have rejected him and he is scheduled from utter vanquishing." I think I might cry then... ;)
If it's all in good fun, it sounds great. :) However, if people start to take it seriously... well, things could get tense. For instance, if people start handing out bad karma because they dislike the opinions posted in Politics... well, that could start a war. :-/ People are friendly... except in politics. Oh, and theology... We should probably be careful. Maybe some critera could be created regarding giving serious bad karma? People, in the heat of anger or upset could look at those guidelines and decide whether or not they really want to give bad karma points. :) Of course, bad karma just-for-fun is just-for-fun... but you know someone, somewhere is going to get offended and start a serious karma-bashing. :( I'm still new to MWs, I know (less than a year here), but I've seen some threads get pretty tense and people offended...
Yes, I know, that's a lot of rules and silliness for something that is just for fun...
But what do you want? I'm Jewish! Have you ever seen the Talmud? You could fill a library with all the Talmudic commentaries there are! We like laws! ;)

It's the just the negative aspect that will hurt people and may leave members feeling angry.

I would, personally, be a MUCH happier person if people pointed out specifically where I post offensive things and why they are offensive. Instead sometimes I hear second hand how mean I am and never know who I offended or how  Honestly, I'm really for this as it gives people the opportunity to provide constructive feedback in a not-too-serious way.
And it brightens my day, honestly brightens my life really, when I do get notes saying "hey what you said there really made sense to me, thanks!". I do get PMs like that sometimes, and with the karma system it's just easier for people to do that. I've already gotten a few really nice notes!

Exactly! It was the first thing I checked when I got to the boards today. I couldnt help smiling at the notes people left me. And, I even got a big red tag from someone over a post in Political Pagan with the note "You need to calm down." Exactly! It was the first thing I checked when I got to the boards today. I couldnt help smiling at the notes people left me. And, I even got a big red tag from someone over a post in Political Pagan with the note "You need to calm down." After checking out the post in question I realized...yikes, maybe that was a tad bit harsh.
I may a bit slow today (a few days away from the computer does that to me), but...where exactly do you see comments that are left? I checked the UCP but didn't see anything at all regarding the karma system. Does nothing show up if there haven't been any comments left?
I like it - but I fear the beating my karma will take from PP...:tongueout

Call me a drag, if you want, but it seems like to much of a popularity contest to me. I've seen too many pile-ons in other places and I don't want tosee them here. I think the system will encourage them, and I'd rather see our esteemed administrators issuing appropriate warnings where warnings are due.

These were exactly my concerns. It reminds me too much of the social dysfunction of reality shows and also seems that it will lead to an impersonal relationship between admin and members. While I realize that this board is way too big for the admins to keep up after every single post, I'm not sure it's such a good idea to utilize peer influence.
And I can't get excited about getting points for anything unless they're going to pay off my student loans or something..........

Ugh, the Karma system has nothing to do with moderation/administration. I guess I don't understand what you think the system is for. It is purely for fun and the same rules that apply to this community also apply to that system.

Not to speak for Autumn, but I see it as a way of letting the members have some influence over posts, although there may be some merit in the way it could remind people to watch what they say.
It's probably due to my professional background as well as personal opinions, including my distaste for the concept of reality shows, but I don't see it as a very healthy form of fun.
Just my opinion and as I said earlier, I see the safeguards and it may end up working the way it's intended to. We'll just have to see.

I guess I don't see the difference, in regards to the karma system and a "popularity contest". Popularity contests go on in this forum anyway - whether it's someone posting, private messaging, chatting on AIM, or using the karma system - they happen in any community. If someone wants to engage in "popularity contests" they will use the karma system, or failing that they'll gossip in chat and spread rumours. *shrugs*
Back to the "guns don't people" type thinking; karma points don't cause "popularity contests", people do.

And uh, sorry, I don't get your reality show bit - giving people karma points isn't following their every move with a camera and broadcasting it to millions of strangers. How does it encourage social dysfunction for me to say "hey, Ben made a great post today" and send him a quick note saying so?

Mol explained on the first thread about the karma system how karma power points work. Karma power points are NOT karma points, however. The power points determine how much karma you give/take away from people. You can figure out your power points by reading the rules and looking over how many posts you've made, etc.
Rain Gnosis
June 18th, 2003, 12:25 AM
*chuckles* Thanks for explaining that more clearly. However, I still don't think it adds up. You get 1 power point per 1000 posts (I don't have 1000), 1 for every 90 days you've been registered (I haven't been registered for 90 days with this nick yet, according to my first post I've only used the nick for a month today), and 1 point for every 100 karma points (I don't have 200 yet, therefore that's 1 point). So, that I used 2 rather than 1 is still over my head.

I have updated the Karma system. Now you can touch 10 different peoples Karma every 24 hours and regarding negative Karma.
Negative Karma is given with HALF of your power. So, lets say you have a power of 20, well then you would take 10 Karma points from someone. Now, the twist I added was this. Half of the ACTUAL Karma points taken from anyone will also be taken from you. So, in our situation of taking 10 points from someone, 5 points would be deducted from you. :)

Go....it would be nice if we could all "play along nicely" but I have a feeling this just leaves far too much room for hard feelings, people who may not be able to take a joke as well as others..etc.Oh, I don't know. The system's pretty easy to ignore if you want, since your karmatic rating isn't blared at you all over the place. Maybe, if it was really that bad, the control panel could have a "Ignore Karma" button added to it.
Other than that, you just have to grow a thicker skin.
But..while it's still been here, I've been having fun with it ;)
... what if we erased the "negative karma" aspect, and just had "Good Karma" or "Bonus Karma" instead? I was thinking...when we see someone who is asking for energy, releasing a primal scream, ranting, or sharing something that is painful to them, we could just click on that handy dandy feature, and send them some "Bonus Karma" to brighten their day a little bit.I very firmly believe that there is no light without darkness, no day without night, no pleasure without pain.
If you don't have something to contrast against "it" (whatever "it" is), "it" will loose its meaning very quickly, no matter how good "it" seems on the surface.
I haven't found any exceptions to this very simple concept, and the Karma system is no exception.

This is starting to sound too much like MATH!
Only for Mol and his programs... lol :D
Anyway, I'm happy enough with the system the way it is, I'm just pointing out my observations ;)

...how come the Karmic backlash only applies to negative Karma? Shouldn't it apply to all Karma dished out? Seems unbalanced.
heh...I'll stop complaining now, lol. :imout:
I could probably code that in. It seems only fair, except I only added the Negative backslash to deter peopel from handing out only negative Karma. You know...evetually they would run out of Karma points themselves.

I guess that would be a good deterrant, but couldn't there just be a limit to the amount of negative Karma, like the limit to giving Karma to the same person too much? Just a popup saying, like "You have to give some good Karma before you can take any!" or something?
It just seems entirely unbalanced that you are 'punished' for giving negative Karma (even if you have a legitimate reason for doing so) but you aren't 'rewarded' for giving positive. Also, by giving negative Karma to a person, even if you give it sparingly or in a non-vindictive manner, a lot of the time you'll end up doing more harm to yourself than that person could do to you...
It makes having the 'taketh away' radial a bit redundant if people are seemingly 'reprimanded' for using it. (I know that's not quite what's going on, but do you know what I mean?)

On the same Token...lets say a person has a power of 20. Lets say we do it just like the Karmic backlash. In this instance, every time this person touched Karma positively they would earn 5 points for themselves. Thats 20 points a day and a level up on power every 2 days. That is unbalanced. Pretty soon everyone would be maxed on Karma points. I think it could be a hard coded value. Every time someone touches Karma positively then they earn 1 point for themselves.

In fact, this is now coded in.

Yea, I can see how it could get outta hand if it were the same way as the negatives! Your idea definately makes more sense.
I'll stop complaining now, really I will. lol Thanks Mol! I didn't mean to be a pain in the butt ;)

so just how many people can you reach out and "touch", before the sign comes up and tells ya to keep your hands to yourself?
ya just can't touch every body at one time...

I was just thinking (it's an odd feeling) that maybe to make sure members who join a long time down the road know that it's a game to maybe change the alt tags to little goofy things. Like "so-and-so smells like a googly-eyed grapefruit." or "so-and-so has ears of cheese." Or just odd random crazy things. That's just my little idea.
