I really, really, really, really, really hate to do this... but I'm about to recommend a book. (Sigh.) I'm not one of "those" I swear! It just happens to be good... ah well.
"Animal Magick" by DJ Conway. Its a book on familiars and (to a lesser extent) totem animals. You might just find it useful. :)

It has a whole chapter on how to attract a familar but no rituals or spells on the subject. I would also try meditating on what kind of animal would be best for you to work with.

***WARNING - THIS IS MY OPINION AND DEFINITELY NOT A RULE***
That would depend on if you are looking for a "real" familar or just an animal with which to closely associate yourself or circumstances with (a totem).
Finding your totem/s can be a simple matter of cruising the on-line sites and of course Andrew's books are great on this subject.
"My belief" about familars, however, may be of no help to you if you think someone can tell you how to do this... have you ever seen the movie Willow? Which finger on which hand is the magic finger?
Only you can choose your "real" familar and you can sometimes go for decades or even a lifetime without finding a familar that is suited perfectly for you. I have gone through numerous "familars" in my short life span and have yet to find one that suits my needs/emotions perfectly... and you can forget about my current cat, she thinks I am her familar!
This is only MY BELIEF and more than likely totally contradicts that of others, but it may be helpful in letting you to expand your freedom of "practice" and keep you from limiting yourself to what you can find in books or as written "rules". Go with what you feel is right, always for intuition usually rocks!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, one of the local eclectic stores around here sells incense that is supposed to attract familars, I couldn't say if it works because I am not a very ritualistic pagan, but you might want to call around to some stores (if you have any in your area) and see if they have ever heard of this. I can't remember the brand, but it was a more expensive package with a white and blue label, they also make incense for all of the elements, I know it was the best quality incense in the store!

I have several different ones, but here's one you could try.
Contacting your Familiar
Begin with the altar consecration ritual. The actual consecration of the altar is optional, but after the invocation of the elementals and lighting of candles and incense, use the following to call your familiar:
Oh teacher mine, I call to thee,
I seek your guidance earnestly.
In silence now, I sit and listen,
For your light and love to glisten,
All around me everywhere,
I thank you for the good we share.
Chant it three times. When you feel it’s presence, greet it as a warm friend.
Caution: If it does not feel right to you, then end it immediately. It should feel loving and warm and friendly.
I have others as well. If this doesn't work, let me know and I'll send you others for spirit guides, nature spirit guides, etc...

My Familiar found me :) After years of "Searching" I gave up... and just then; he came to me! (I've learned that if I try "too hard" things don't happen)
I was at the Animal Shelter with a friend when this beautiful black kitten started calling to me from his cage! It was like I had no choice but to bring him home with me...
That's how I found my Familiar... I just wish he would tell me his name already! Cuz "Kitty" is getting kinda old!

I know you said it's your opinion, and I'm certainly not trying to be argumentative - but I think it's important to note that finding a totem animal isn't quite this easy. It can require a fair amount of journeying for a totem to reveal itself to you, and even then it should appear at least three times before you consider it a totem.

I think it depends on your idea of totem - to me, a totem is a spirit that is part of your soul throughout your life. You don't pick one, by surfing websites or otherwise, but try to determine what yours is. I feel each of us are born with one.
As to animal guides - I do believe you can choose a species, and it can chance throughout your life. You can find one of those by determining what animal you want to work in your life, or by what animal shows up in your meditations and dreams. I don't believe there's a set minimal number of times it should show up (such as 3), but I do think that it shows up several times is important. I'm not even sure 3 times would be *enough* if you dream about animals normally anyway.
And beyond that, a familiar is a physical animal that you work with. I don't think you choose them either - they choose you.

I suppose we could be looking at a "You say tomato..." situation :D. Here's my understanding of totem animals in a nutshell: We have 9 animals in our totem and they each represent a medicine we carry with us in this lifetime. Each animal in our totems is connected to one of the 7 directions (North, South, East, West, Above, Below & Within), with the remaining 2 being life guardians that walk on either side of us at all times.
Animal guides, on the other hand, may come in and out of our lives as situations occur. They may stay with us for a few weeks or even a few years but are not a part of our totem. Additionally, we can call upon an animal's medicine if we need to, but again, that doesn't make them a part of our totem.
The idea of a animal presenting itself to you at least 3 times is one of the ways it distinguishes itself as a totem.
Anyway, I'm certainly not trying to criticize anyone's methods - I just think it's important to distinguish between a totem and a guide, etc.
